Ring Shopping - A Cain Fic

--- I posted this on my Ao3 a few days ago and forgot to post it on my Tumblr... So here ya go! --- Cain stood outside the glossy jewellery store– allegedly the best in the city, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows on the pavement. He glanced at the display windows, smirking. Smirking so confidently you’d think he’s probably got it all figured out– and, well, he thought so too as he pushed the doors open. It’s just a ring, right? How hard could it be? He was greeted by the clerks and merchants, who were good at pretending they wanted to be there at all. “Good afternoon, sir,” one called out, stepping forward, “Looking for something special?” Cain’s smirk deepened, “ Very. Something that my future wife can’t say ‘no’ to.” The clerk nodded, “Why of course, sir! We’ve got plenty of exquisite options that will make any woman say yes without hesitation. Please, follow me.” He led Cain deeper into the store, past glittering displays of gems set in delicate bands. Cain’s eyes scanned the rings as the clerk showed them. They were very beautiful and definitely worth more than the average person’s yearly salary. They were rare jewels, the kind collectors would whisper about. The kind people would die for. The kind one would probably look at for hours and still not get tired because they were just that gorgeous. Yet, Cain wasn’t satisfied . He picked one of them up, turning it under the light and trying to figure out what the problem was. “The cut’s wrong on this one. Amateur work. I’ve seen more depth in a damn puddle.” he finally muttered. The clerk blinked at the unexpected comment, before putting on that same practiced grin, “Ah… I see. Well, there’s plenty more options to choose from, sir!” Cain picked up another one. “The prongs are bulky, they’ll snag on everything she wears.” And another. “The gold’s not as pure as it should be. What kind of an idiot do you take me for?”

“It’s twenty four karats though, sir!”

“Twenty four karats of disappointment.” And another. “You must be messing with me. The setting is all crooked. Was the jeweller asleep while they were making this?” “T- That design is very popular, sir–” “So are knockoff sneakers.”

And another. But no matter which one he looked at, none of them satisfied him. Worse. None of them felt yours. Sure, they were glittery. Yes, they were sparkly. And yeah, maybe there were women who’d kill to get their hands on one of these. But maybe that was the problem. None of them were special. None of them screamed your name. They were all just noise. Flashy. Loud. Obnoxious. Distractions that anyone could buy if they had the money. And you were certainly not anyone. The clerk blinked, visibly regretting his choice in careers. The smile on his face was long gone. The poor man was confused. He’d never met someone so unimpressed by beautiful riches like these. “S-Sir, these are some of the finest pieces in the country.” the poor clerk said, voice slightly wavering.

“If these are what you call fine, maybe you should consider a new line of work.” Cain scoffed, looking at the poor clerk with shark eyes. It was clear he was getting impatient. I mean— this was supposed to be a quick in and out. Instead, here he was, spending hours in a store he thought he’d only need to be in for five minutes. On top of that, this so-called ‘best jewellery store’ apparently did not have anything good to offer. Or— at least— nothing good enough for you.

“I- I assure you, sir, our artisans have dedicated their lives to crafting these rare pieces.” the clerk stammered, adjusting his tie for the nth time.

“And all that dedication created these disappointments.” Cain sighed, “If this is a lifetime’s work, I’d hate to see what you people make on bad days.”

The clerk swallowed, trying to think for a moment. Unhappy customers were so rare, he didn’t know what to do. A bead of sweat rolled down his temple. 

“Perhaps we can m- make you a custom order, sir. I- It can be crafted to your preferences and specifications..” he finally let out. 

Cain’s eyebrow raised, intrigued but annoyed at the time wasted. “Could’ve told me you did those an hour ago. Would’ve saved both of us alot of time and trouble.” he muttered.

The clerk gave a stiff, apologetic nod, though the pounding in his ears made it hard to hear himself think.

“I- I’ll fetch our head artisan immediately.” he said, his voice cracking as if even the thought of keeping Cain waiting a second longer might be fatal.

“Good. Thank you.” –---- Cain smiled as he walked back to his mansion, greeted by Giuseppe. “How was ring shopping, sir?” Giuseppe had a knowing look. Of course he did. Cain had arrived after hours. “It went well. Easy peasy.” Cain quickly replied. “But Master Cain, it’s been hours since you left. I thought you said you would be back in fifteen minutes tops.” Giuseppe pointed out, smiling.

It was true– Cain hadn’t expected buying a ring to take more than fifteen minutes, though Giuseppe had warned him otherwise. The man had offered to accompany his young master, eager to assist, but Cain insisted on handling it alone. If you asked him, he’d say it was because it was just a ring, but deep down, Cain knew he wanted the choice to be entirely his own. No help. No distractions. Just him. That’s what would make it truly special.

“I just wanted to explore the city,” he shrugged. “You’ve lived here your whole life.” “Exactly. It’s important to appreciate the finer things.” “But sir, you don’t appreciate the finer things.”

“Giuseppe, you’re fired.” Cain smirked.

And the two of them continued to talk and laugh, as Cain took out his phone to set a reminder on his calendar—though, if he was honest with himself, the reminder was probably pointless. He would be counting down every day, every second, just waiting for the moment he could finally hold the ring in his hand and give it to you. The one he had taken so long designing and perfecting. The one you would soon be wearing on the pretty little ring finger of yours.  Ohh he just couldn’t wait.

I'm soo exited to see Tim and Joy shopping for the engagement ring for Lucy,

and I really hope Angela will join, because I want parallel for the scene where Tim helped her choose her wedding dress🥰🥰🥰💜💜

Tried on a few rings but they didn’t have any of the models I sent them from their website ahead of time for me to try on… and the salesman who led our appt was not a good listener. They also only had 2 marquise rings in the whole store to try on and one of them was silver 🤡 he kept bringing me options that I told him I didn’t like (in silver, with side stones, one round shaped one) and saying there were more options online. Ok but I can look online from home and we booked an appt for me to try on things in store…what’s the point of booking weeks in advance and selecting the models from their website you want to try on in the store if they’re not going to have them?

It was a brilliant earth store too so it’s not like it’s a small shop. I was really surprised at their lack of selection.

It is really good practice for me as a people pleaser with a fawn response to say “no I don’t actually like this one” so that’s good I guess?

We went and got gelato after to debrief and Clay is coming up with a list of other local jewelry stores for us to go to for me to try other rings on.

That’s The One

Tim has some shopping to do. He takes his best friend, Angela and unofficial kid Tamara for this very important purchase.

Days after Lucy walked away from UC had been blissful. She had never felt more happy and content with her decision. She was back on patrol. Sometimes alone and on occasion with Aaron when he wasn’t helping Angela and Nyla. Lucy still wanted at some point to take the detectives exam. However, with a bitter officer who got moved out of Metro with Lucy’s five player trade on Tim’s behalf and was blocking her. She knew she needed to just let it be for now. She just wanted to be happy right and was perfectly happy on patrol. Life was so good. Everything felt right. She had a great family at Wilshire and was living a dream with the love of her life. Whatever the future held professionally for her. She had Tim by her side and that was priceless to her.

Tim had been so overwhelmed by the sacrifice. Lucy had made for him. For them. No one in his life had ever put him first like that. Not his parents. Not Isabel. Rachel. Ashley. No one. This woman has surely changed everything for him since day one. She had long become so much more than his hot shot rookie. Tim had talked to Pine and had asked to scale back too much overtime. He obviously had to be on call on occasion as he was the sergeant. Lucy had made such a sacrifice for him, he wanted to be with her at home as much as he possibly could.

After Lucy had changed career paths. They had a serious talk about taking the next step. Because they were both transitioning professionally. They had decided it wasn’t the right time to buy a house. Tim decided to sell his house. It was time. He shared that house with Isabel and it had long not felt like a home since they divorced. The house was in a nice area of LA, it didn’t take long to sell. Tim moved him and Kojo into Lucy’s apartment. They had a long talk with Tamara before making this move. Always wanting to make sure she was comfortable. Tamara is in college full time. On the road to becoming a lawyer. Both Lucy and Tim were so proud of her. She had gone from having nothing, no path to being at the top of her class in college. She had a lot of great friends. She was thriving. Tim had grown fond of Tamara and even considered her an unofficial daughter. They truly were a family. Tamara was elated with Tim moving in. Even more excited that she would be able to steal Kojo. Tim had been strict with Kojo not letting him sleep on the bed but he knew full well all those rules would be thrown out the window with his girls.

It was time for Tim to go and purchase a ring for Lucy. He had many ideas about the proposal. One thing at a time. He was clueless when it came to rings. He never even bought Isabel a ring as they got married on a whim. Lucy was the love of his life. He wanted to get the perfect ring for her that showed just how committed he is to their future. Tim was starting to feel overwhelmed. It was time to bring in reinforcements. Tim pulled his phone out.

Tim and Angela arrived at basically the same time. As they sat down. Angela couldn’t wipe the smile off her face.

“Are you gonna stare at me the whole time”

“Maybe, I am just so happy for my best friend. No one deserves this happiness more than you, Tim. I know after Isabel and everything that happened took you to such a dark place and you never thought you would find happiness again. Enter Lucy Chen”

“Isn’t that the truth. It’s unreal how she changed everything for me. The best rookie I ever trained. In more ways than one. Honestly, Ang. I know I was a hard ass at first because I had to be to properly train her. But she was gonna be a game changer for me from that first day. Thinking of everything we have been through together. Caleb, Rosalyn which for the record I have NEVER been more terrified in my life when I pulled her out of that barrel. I couldn’t lose her. I truly was in love with her back then if I’m being honest with myself. So many obstacles prevented me from pursuing anything past a platonic relationship but I got to build a friendship with her. Ashley was just a distraction but I really stayed with her for way too long. Everytime I saw her with Chris, my heart shattered into a million pieces. I am just so happy we got to this place. Lucy Chen is the brightest light in my life. All the ways she has given me a new life. Risking everything on many occasions. Getting me into Metro and now being blocked from moving forward on becoming a detective. Her giving up the UC life. No one has ever prioritized me”

“She truly is the love of your life. Just so you know. Lucy will be able to become a detective. Nyla and I will move mountains to back her. Just let the dust settle a little. So, are you ready to buy a ring and get down on one knee”

“I sure am. How about Saturday? Lucy is working this weekend. I want to talk to Tamara as well. Maybe bring her along?”

“Of course Tim. Tamara is an amazing girl. She truly is yours and Lucy’s kid. She may be an adult but Lucy changed her life and I know she has worked her way into your heart as well. I know she will feel honoured to be included in this. I have to get back to work. Talk to Tam and I will see you on Saturday. Let’s pick out the perfect ring”

Tim had texted Tamara asking her to meet at a coffee shop, knowing she had a break from classes. Tim had become invested in Tamara’s life. He pretty much knew her schedule. Tamara walked into Nevin’s to a waiting Tim.

“Hi Dadford”

Tim annoyed with that name at first, it now had completely grown on him.

“Hey, Kiddo”

“So where is the ring?”

“What?”

“Oh please. I have known this moment was coming for a while now”

“Right. So, I have your blessing to ask Lucy to marry me?”

“Of course, Dadford. It feels like that moment where a kid prays her parents would get married already”

“Good. We love you so much kid. I hope you know that”

“I do”

“Ok. Do you have plans on Saturday?”

“I don’t think so. Probably some studying”

“Could I steal you away from studying for a few hours. Join Angela and I to pick out the perfect ring for Lucy”

“I can’t think of anything I would love to do more. Thank you for having me be a part of this”

“Of course, kid. Lucy is working on Saturday so we can go shopping in the morning”

“Sounds perfect”

On Saturday morning, Tim sent Lucy off to work. He told her he was going to have a relaxing day, taking Kojo for a hike. A little white fib for the greater good. Tim and Tamara made their way over to Angela’s.

After many hours to many jewelry shops. Tim saw many rings he liked. It wasn’t until the last shop, he felt he had found the perfect ring. It was a rose gold, oval shaped diamond. The ladies also thought it was perfect and was definitely Lucy’s style. He had truly found the perfect ring. Tim paid. It was quite a dent in his credit card but he could care less. There was no amount of money that could measure how worth it she is.

As they all sat down to enjoy a smoothie. Angela was the first to notice the pure happiness written all over Tim’s face.

“So you got the most perfect ring. When is the proposal going down?”

“I want something that’s us. I have a few ideas. I am gonna ponder it for a few days but I want to propose very soon”

“Dadford. Anyway I can help. I am there”

“I second that, Bradford”

Tim and Tamara headed home with his priceless purchase. He was going to lock the ring in his desk at work, not trusting there was a good hiding spot in the apartment. Tamara headed to the library to study. Tim took Kojo for a long walk. Lucy had texted and told him she was headed to a call. Tim quickly drove over to Wilshire to lock the ring in his desk. As Tim was driving home, a million thoughts swarming through his head about how he was going to propose. As he was pulling into the parking lot. His phone chiming.

To: Tim (Babe)

“Hi babe. That call was a doozy. Drunk college kids. Made me think of how lucky that “our kid”isn’t living that kind of college life. We kinda hit the jackpot with her {winky face emoji}

From: Tim (Babe)

To: Lucy (My Love)

“She will never live that life. If I have anything to say about it. Not “our kid”

From: Lucy (My Love)

To: Tim (Babe)

“I am heading back to the station to finish some paperwork and then will be home. I just want to cuddle with you and Kojo with some top chef”

“Your boys will be waiting for you baby”

As Tim walked into their apartment. Tim felt joyful thinking about the future ahead of him. He finally had found true happiness with the most beautiful and amazing woman.

I imagine that for them, Christmas in Madison was probably a turning point where future talk stopped being about vague “somedays” and started being about Bitty moving in, Bitty turning his YouTube channel into a career, and what things like “long engagement” and “after graduation” mean for the two of them.

I like to think that by February, Jack probably has a pretty clear idea that he’s proposing after graduation, but that he kind of forgets he needs a ring until the Falcs miss playoffs.

So maybe he needs a distraction, and a reminder that he has good things in his life and his future that have nothing to do with the NHL. And maybe he goes to buy a ring, because some rings are more important than a Cup ring. And maybe the sting of losing isn’t so bad when your best friends are helping you plan a proposal.
