It's not that I mind a friendly rival, but some of them I just feel like I'm bullying them after a while and it makes me feel a bit guilty.

Like, poor Hau appears to be crying after you beat him for the Champion's spot in Ultra. All bro wants to do is make his grandfather proud and I just made him cry 😟

And then Hop grew up in his brother's shadow all his life and just wants to make a name for himself, and the player and Bede just crush that dream of his (until he finds a non-battle way to do it by becoming a Professor instead.)

There's Kieran too, who is sidelined from the opportunity to even pursue his own dream (at first), and mentally breaks when he realizes we've been hiding things from him over the Pokemon he's always felt a kinship with. For another kick in the pants, we were his first friend and his own family insist we keep him in the dark.

Some of them weren't bad tho, like Hugh is fun (he has no real League vision, he's primarily just trying to get strong enough to get his sister's Pokemon back from Team Plasma) or Nemona, who is already a Champion and is looking for an opponent that'll finally give her a challenge. Many of the others were a bit bland: Gen3's (largely because we don't see Wally enough), Gen6's, and Marnie come to mind.

(Tho I will say there are a few jerk rivals I do feel kinda bad for too, like Bede and Silver. Bede is an orphan, and Silver was presumably a runaway after Giovanni left. Plus the mafia definitely wasn't a good environment for a child to grow up in, it's unlikely he would have developed normal social skills to begin with. Tho you wouldn't have found this out in the HGSS era thru normal gameplay, they locked those scenes behind the event Celebi.)
