argument with rosaria about her smoking (I do not want her to die)
Getting Rosaria to quit smoking
A/n: We love to see people care about their S/O's health. Hope you enjoy!
Light angst ahead
Rosaria smokes. A lot. Heck, you first met her on one of her smoke breaks. At first, you thought it was odd for a nun to be smoking, especially in the Cathedral, but you brushed it off as a one time thing to relieve the stress of her job.
However, when you started dating and moved in together, you noticed her doing it more and more. You tried to ignore it, believing she would be responsible enough to limit herself.
Then, you started noticing things. The sagging skin, the stained teeth and how she'd often start coughing out of nowhere. You ask Barbara about it only to find out she has a reputation as the "chain-smoking sister".
You begin to worry about her health, so, not wanting to start a fight, you calmly approach her about the issue. And she agrees.
Over the next few days. you no longer see her smoking over the balcony or when you go to meet up with her after she skips another of the church's activities.
As a show of gratitude for her quitting, you decide to cook beef bourguignon for her for dinner. You plate the food on your fanciest silverware, pour a glass of your finest wine for each of you and even light a candle.
You stand by the door, ready to surprise her when she gets home. Minutes pass, then thirty, then an hour. Usually, she would have been home by now, expecting a warm dinner ready and waiting.
Getting worried, you head over to the Angel's Share tavern, hoping she was somehow just too tipsy to remember what time it was. To your dismay, Charles informs you she hasn't been there all night.
Despite the chance of her being at the church at this time being more unlikely than her getting drunk, you decide to check there anyway. Barbara notices you at the entrance and becomes nervous, though she tries to hide it.
"O-Oh! H-Hey, Y/N!"
"Hey, Barbara, you haven't seen Rosaria recently, have you?"
"N-Not at all! She's definitely not down the side of the church!"
Your face drops and you immediately turn to leave. Barbara rushes over and grabs your arm to stop you.
"Y-Y/N, wait! P-Please don't tell her I told you. I-I don't want her to hate me..."
You sigh but reluctantly agree. As you exit the church and head down the side, you find what you both expected and dreaded to see: Rosaria leaning against the wall, a lit cigarette in her mouth.
"Rosaria..."
She turns to you with a nonchalant look in her eyes as she takes the cigarette out of her mouth.
"Oh. I'm guessing Barbara told you, then."
"Don't bring her into this. You told me you quit smoking."
"I did tell you that. And I figured as long as I didn't do it in front of you, it'd be fine."
Her reply causes tears to start forming in your eyes.
"Is that really what you think? That as long as you sneak around to do something and I don't find out, it doesn't affect me?"
"Why would it? I'm the only one doing it, my lungs are the only ones getting damaged. How could it possibly hurt you?"
"Because I love you!"
Your tears start flowing down your cheeks. Your sudden outburst causes a slight crack in Rosaria's stone-faced expression.
"Every time I hear you cough, it feels like you're one step closer to the grave. One step closer...to leaving me behind. Maybe you don't care if you die or not, but I do."
After waiting a few seconds with no reply from her, you wipe your tears with your arm and walk away from Rosaria, leaving her alone. Rosaria watches you leave, then looks back to the cigarette.
She thinks about the words you told her. You love her. This wasn't new information to her. You told her that every time she left the house and every time you went to sleep. So much so it had become as routine to her as breathing, eating and drinking wine.
However, the way you said it with tears in your eyes stirred something inside her. She tried to take another puff of her cigarette, to forget the interaction ever happened. But she can't.
Her hand shakes. It won't bring the cigarette to her mouth no matter how much she tells it to. Then, she winces, snapping the cigarette in two and crushing it in her hand. She'd find a way to make it up to you. Somehow.
The next day, you wake up, Rosaria's not in the bed with you. You look around the house and figure she must've already left for the day. Uncommon, but not impossible.
Your head is a blur the entire day. You get through work only putting in the bare minimum, unable to think about anything but Rosaria. You just want to go home and pretend everything is fine.
As you go to open your front door, you notice something strange. Several cigarettes strewn across the floor, they've all been stamped on, yet they look entirely unused.
You enter the house to a familiar scent. Beef bourguignon. You turn to the dining room and see your intuition was correct. Two plates of beef bourguignon lay on the table, a glass of wine beside each and a lit candelabra sits between them.
A similar set up to the one you had prepared the night before, only with Rosaria's unique ornamentation of dark purple thorns surrounding the silverware added.
Stood beside the table is Rosaria herself, with an unusually shy face.
"You did all this for me?"
"I thought about what you said last night. Then, I asked Kaeya what he thought I should do, and he told me usually people cook something for their partner as a show of apology. While I considered it ridiculous, it sounded like the kind of thing that you would be into."
"...So what you're trying to say is-"
"I'm sorry. I only thought about my own feelings without considering yours. While I cannot take back my past actions, I'll do my best to try better in the future."
"...And the cigarettes?"
"I thought it would make a nice symbolic gesture to show I truly quit this time. I asked Jean to have someone clean them up later. Now, shall we eat?"
She gestures towards the meal on the table. You ignore the food for now, instead choosing to rush straight towards Rosaria, pulling her into a hug.
"I love you."
Rosaria is stunned, then she smiles. She awkwardly wraps her arms around you and pets your head.
"I love you, too."
