Summary:
“I feel his eyes fixed on my back and my ass. God gave me a powerful Viking body, as everyone says, and I'm proud of it, but now I'd like to be small and manageable. Anyway, Jude will know how to mount me properly, he'll definitely have no problems; he's not that small either. He is compared to me, but everyone is compared to me.” Erling is about to face Jude in the quarterfinals of the world championship and relives the most important moments of his relationship with him.
This is about Real People Fics. My opinion is bound to be unpopular with half, popular with the other half.
Then it segues into Soulmates.
Reminder that this is all my opinion and it's worth about what you think it is.
To start - I had never heard of RPFs until I found Brittana and discovered there were a slew of RPFs about Naya and Heather.
Initially, I was totally against them, feeling like it was disrespectful to the actresses. But, I'm a curious (nosy, same thing) person and couldn't resist the pull of a good story. And there are plenty that are good.
Here's the thing. RPFs aren't really RPFs (MY OPINION). What I discovered was; they put Santana and Brittany's personalities onto Naya and Heather and "tweaked it" slightly to make it more "real" ... SLIGHTLY being the key word. What it seemed like (TO ME) was that the people wanted to write Brittany & Santana as two actresses on a tv show that fall in love IRL. Make sense?
This has come to the forefront of my brain because of my newer fixation on Swarla. People are up in arms about fiction writers writing Ali/Vicky fics. It's "disrespectful to the actresses", they're real people with real feelings, not fictional characters. Which is true. The odds of them reading those fics is pretty slim. (I am not sure how slim it was because I have read that Naya was a fic reader but I think, with Ali and Vicky, it's highly unlikely). Also ... if you don't like that kind of story ... DON'T READ IT. You don't need to leave nasty comments (which, going by the one I read, the author was looking for - given the "cry about it" summary - that was literally the summary - and the responses to the comments). Just scroll past. Nothing you say is going to persuade that person to take down the fic. Or to not write it. The BEST way to bother a fic writer? Don't react. Don't comment. Don't kudo or share or bookmark. Easy peasy.
Now ...
Soulmates
(stick with me, this will make sense by the end - mostly)
I don't believe in soulmates, per se. In the early 00s I read a couple of books by a psychic named Sylvia Browne who dismissed the notion of soulmates and said, instead, that there are soul groups. Groups of souls that are bound together and find each other lifetime after lifetime. There's that person (those people) - that you've never met before - but it feels like you've known each other forever.
I sort of straddle the line. I think there are both soulmates and soul groups. Ya with me so far? Like your best friend group. There's that ONE friend that you will always call first. You love them all, are comfortable with them all, don't care if they know everything ... but there's the one that always gets called first/told first.
I also believe, very strongly, that soulmates are not necessarily ROMANTIC in nature. And this is why RPFs exist. (See what I did there?)
Naya & Heather were, in my opinion, soulmates. Not romantic partners (while it's fun to think that way, both of them chose other romantic partners and I have to respect *that*). The way they looked at one another on screen and off, the way they supported each other off screen, the way they LOVED each other (non-romantic/non-sexual) was *next level* (I used this in my fic TFTEISHF) ... their souls recognizing each other beyond the physical. The "I know you". Two people can love each other completely and fully and NOT be soulmates. Two people can be soulmates and NOT be romantic/sexual. (I had a friend, a long time ago, who pointed this out to me because she was getting ready to marry the love of her life but believed her soulmate was a different guy who she had ZERO romantic/sexual feelings for - last I knew, she was still married to the non-soulmate).
I *believe* the same of Ali/Vicky. Those two look at each other and it's next level. I adore my partner, can't imagine my life without her; I have *never* looked at her (in almost 23 years) the way Ali and Vicky look at each other. I know very little of their personal lives - which, I am very okay with - and I don't need to know anything they don't wish to share.
My beliefs about Naya/Heather, Ali/Vicky don't make them true. I don't think I'm being disrespectful by being in love with their relationships - on and off screen. And I think that's why I gravitated toward Swarla. They gave off the same vibe as Brittana. The actresses are FRIENDS ... Ali and Vicky refer to each other as "work wives"; Naya and Heather were always a two-shot - Naya went see Heather in Dancing with the Stars, she was onstage supporting Heather when Heather gave a speech.
When the chemistry comes across in STILL PHOTOS - you know you're witnessing something extraordinary, something special. To this day, there are photos of Naya and Heather that take my breath away. The recent interviews for the Swarla wedding have similar photos that are absolutely breathtaking. That relationship pulls people in.
Those four women are actresses; they're PAID to do a job. And all four of them have done it well. But Brittana doesn't work with anyone BUT Naya and Heather. Swarla doesn't work with anyone but Ali and Vicky. Because of that chemistry, respect, and yes - love.
I was chatting with someone who said "I want someone to look at me the way they look at each other" ... and, good luck. My parents have good chemistry. They've been married almost 60 years and I've seen the way my dad looks at my mom and I know he absolutely adores her, completely besotted with her. He's almost 85 and gets JEALOUS (not like OTT, ragey) over a widower friend paying my almost 80 year old mother attention (purely friendly, no agenda - he's still grieving his late wife - mom's best friend). I've never seen him look at my mom like *that*. I have what my parents have and I'm pretty damn happy.
That chemistry, that *next level* connection, is rare.
And it may not translate into romantic/sexual attraction. (Just like romantic/sexual attraction doesn't necessarily translate into a healthy relationship)
It may just be your soul recognizing someone else's and going "hey, I know you! Where have you been?"
End note: I probably could have included Xena/Gabrielle, Lucy/Renee in this ... because it all applies to them as well.
Once again - all my opinion ... worth about what you think it is.
RPF is so cool because there is a public figure and a random freak goes, "what if I write some shit that’s barely even based on them really… yeah, what if I did that…"

Feel free to reblog for other people to vote. DO NOT SEND HATE TO ANYONE FOR WHAT THEY VOTED. This is merely for fun and to see what people genuinely think.
Note: I write about how the characters interact with the world and each other. I focus on the characters, not necessarily the conflict unless it is interfering in their relationship or stopping them from being around each other. It’s all about the people.

George’s mouth opens and closes a few times before he closes it once and for all. He blinks a few times and Wilbur thinks this is the day. He figured one day something would kill their friendship. Even if he never believed it, there’s always that lingering pain in the back of his head. The silence grows like weeds in your garden that you cannot get rid of. It grows like a dandelion. Where you think it’s beautiful and you hope it will be gorgeous and give you hope and happiness. And it comes and comes and you get your hopes up, your breath stuck in your throat. And it comes.
