Notes from a speaking club about чай culture 🤩🍵 There are 3 kinds of "teapots": 🫖 A чайник is a kettle for heating up water. If it's electric, it's an электрический чайник. 🫖 A заварочный чайник is any teapot for brewing tea. 🫖 When чайник refers to a person, it means they're a novice at something. Or a dummy. 🍵 Пустой чай = when you drink tea without sugar/sweets/food, translates as empty tea. 🍃 Чай is sold в пакетиках in tea bags or листовой/рассыпной loose. 💧 Кипяток = boiling water. 🫖 Заваривать/заварить чай = the process of brewing tea. 🫖🍵💧 Заварка = when you brew strong tea in a чайник for a group of people, you've made заварка. Usually you fill teacups with 1/2 заварка, 1/2 кипяток. Or maybe it's just going to be you drinking this tea all day long, filling your cup in the same manner. But if you brew the чай even stronger than that...
🍵🥴 Чифирь wasn't something we covered in the speaking club, but it goes along with the topic. Чифирь is super-strong, vaguely-intoxicating black tea that is associated with Russian prisons. Как подавать чай means how to serve tea. Here are some phrases: 🍵 чай подаётся последним - tea is served last 🍵 в чём подается чай? - what is tea served in? 🍵 с чем обычно подают чай? - what is tea usually served with? 🍬 К чаю = something (usually sweet) to serve with tea, translates as for the tea 🍵 Чаем на Руси никто не подавился is supposedly an old saying that translates as "No one choked on tea in Rus!" In the speaking club, we learned that if a tea leaf fell into a guest's cup and the hostess started apologizing, the correct response would be чаем на Руси никто не подавился. But I later asked several native Russian speakers and none of them had ever heard of this saying. 🤔 Do you know any other tea vocab in Russian? 🍵
