I previously wrote a post about how unfair Rick C-137 was to Eyepatch Morty in S09E01, considering that Eyepatch Morty literally saved his life and handed his nemesis to him on a silver platter.

But there is another aspect to this mess that I have never seen addressed nor focused on, so I'm gonna talk about it now.

"Rick C-137 is "a little different", Rick C-137 has treated Eyepatch Morty with respect and admiration is S07E05, Eyepatch Morty saw him wanting to avenge Diane and protecting Morty Prime, so it stands to reason EM would want to try again with this grandpa" are the sorts of arguments I've seen on why Eyepatch Morty would do the stuff we saw him do in S09E01.

...Even though Rick C-137 has been repeatedly shooting at him, and also shot at him without hesitatiom when he was being strangled by the enemy they teamed up to face.

So you get how horribly traumatized Eyepatch Morty must have been for his bar of acceptance being so low that even Rick C-137 could pass it.

But there is one more thing:

Rick C-137 is the person who designed the Citadel. His actions have led, either directly or indirectly, to the creation of the Morty Market and the Central Finite Curve.

HE is single-handedly responsible for Eyepatch Morty coming into a world where he is multiversally seen as an object, for him getting trapped into a cycle of child trafficking, for him having no choice but to commit horrible atrocities when he decided to escape.

Rick C-137 is personally (albeit undirectly) responsible for the magnitude of the abuse Eyepatch Morty has suffered through, and all the times he was forced to dirty his hands to get out of it.

Eyepatch Morty knows all this, and in S09E01 he still wanted to try.

And Rick C-137's response was this:

This is unfairness and cruelty to an extreme degree.

And we are expected to cheer along.

One Song, Here Together

Who else was in the house when Chim came over to Eddie's? (It's been six months, what did you think was happening?) A short episode coda to S09E01.

Eddie runs his hand through his hair and straightens his clothes as he makes his way to his front door. He’s got no idea who could be here at this time of night. He’s moderately surprised to see Chim, standing awkwardly on his doorstep with a six-pack of beer. It’s a time-honored Buck move, and it’s weird to see Chim in his place.

In hindsight Eddie should have thought up a reason not to let Chim inside, but he’s a little distracted. Within moments he finds himself sitting in the living room as Chim launches into conversation about Hen and team dynamics and the absurdity of one or more of them going into space.

It's not hard to talk to Chim about this or anything, really – when you’ve spent years shooting the shit with someone in the long hours between calls it’s pretty much automatic. Eddie can’t count the number of times he’s let Chim babble on about something or other, although usually Buck is there too.

Eddie lets his brain float on autopilot as Chim talks about who Hen’s plus one is going to be. It’s pretty obviously been Eddie, lately, and he can’t help but smirk as he remembers how well he has been able to wind Buck up by buddying up with Hen. One of these days lasers are going to come shooting out of Buck’s eyes.

Chim starts in on something about B shift schedules and the new probie who always brings in fruit from the farmer’s market and Eddie realizes that they have unfortunately moved on to an entirely new topic. Eddie really doesn’t want this visit, or whatever it is, to go on too much longer. He did have plans for this evening, and doing further totally unnecessary bonding with Chim was not on the schedule.

The logical thing to do, he thinks, is to finish up his beer and then stretch and say how tired he is, remind Chim that he needs to get home to Maddie and the kids, and then hustle Chim out the door. Of course when Eddie tries to chug his beer he goes a little too fast and gags himself, winding up coughing like crazy. Chim jumps up and – rather loudly and dramatically – starts lecturing Eddie about how emergencies follow them wherever they go and it’s a good thing that there’s a paramedic in the house and that Eddie should know better.

“Eddie – are you okay? Are you choking? Eddie, hang in there-”

Eddie looks up through his streaming eyes to find not just Chim, but Buck looking at him, eyes wide and panicked. Buck practically shoves Chim out of the way and thumps Eddie on the back, catching him around the chest when the motion almost launches him off the couch.

“Buck?” Chim says. “Where did you come from? And – and why don’t you have any clothes on?”

Chim is exaggerating. Buck has his fire engine red boxer briefs on. Although he didn’t when Eddie last saw him.

“Eds, you’re okay, try to relax and breathe.” Buck swipes his thumbs over Eddie’s cheeks, goes to grab his shirt and wipe Eddie’s face but then apparently realizes he’s not wearing one and just kind rubs his forearm over Eddie’s cheeks. “There you go. You’re alright.”

It would be ridiculous, if it wasn’t painfully endearing.

“I’m okay. Just went down the wrong pipe.”

Buck leans his forehead against Eddie’s. “I heard you choking - you scared me.” He looks over and glares at Chim. “What did you do to him?”

Chim looks stunned, but this apparently is too much for him to take. “I gave him a beer!” he finally yells. “A perfectly normal beer! What did you do to him?”

Buck straightens up, and Eddie bites down on a smile. He has a feeling he knows what’s coming, and he can’t even feel that badly for Chim.

“What did I do to him? Do you want to know what I did to him before you got here, or what we were in the middle of when the doorbell rang?” Buck’s voice has gone low and scratchy, and it makes Eddie twitch in response. “Because that second part, hm, I think Eddie was really enjoying himself… you should see the thing he does with his hips….”

Eddie can feel the flush warming his face. Really, he might as well enjoy it. He and Buck have been doing their best to keep their relationship quiet for months, but it was going to come out sometime. Better here than at work. It was only a matter of time before Buck was finally unable to keep up with the pretense of Hen and Eddie as bff’s. Eddie is happy to let him stake his claim in the privacy of their own home – well, as private as it can be with nosy coworkers stopping by unannounced.

Eddie leans in to Buck, tucking his chin over his shoulder and running a hand appreciatively down the muscles of his arm. Buck grins and puffs out his chest, proud as a peacock. “I can’t help what my body does when I’m with you, mi amor,” Eddie says, laying it on thick and planting a kiss on Buck’s cheek. “You make me feel so good.”

“Oh – oh my god,” Chim stutters. “No, uh-uh, no way, I do not want to hear any more-” Chim ducks around them, grabbing what remains of the beer and heading towards the door. “How – how long has this been going on? Why didn’t you tell me – I’m your captain, I deserve to know!”

“Interim captain, no?” Eddie says. “Or was it acting captain?”

“Yeah, maybe if you just captain-ed up and took the job for real people would tell you things. Or take you to space with them,” Buck says, really getting into it.

“See if I let you have therapy sessions with my son anymore,” Chim says.

Buck’s face falls, but Eddie slings an arm over his shoulder and pulls him close. “Don’t worry, cariño, Maddie wouldn’t let that happen. Plus, Chris is always available.”

Chim looks around, as if expecting Chris to come out of the bedroom too, and then shakes his head. “I guess it was going to happen eventually. I don’t know why I’m surprised.” He puts the beer down on the floor and holds his arms out. “Bring it in.”

Eddie and Buck wrap their arms around Chim, who is stuck with his head pressed up against Buck’s bicep. Buck leans over Chim’s shoulder and kisses Eddie. It’s a good kiss. With tongue. Eddie loses himself in it, before Chim interrupts them for the second time that night.

“Okay, if Eddie’s about to do that thing with his hips, could you guys please let me go home first?”
