Miller's Crossing? Oh you mean the episode that starts out fairly normal and fun--we get to see Jeanne's lovely home again, Ronon in a suit, we're back on earth, Rodney gets kidnapped, Sheppard very subtly shows us he's good with kids, we're back at the SGC--it's all so...you know Stargate-y. We even have the traditional 'someone who should have asked for help doing the most extreme thing instead of simply asking' trope. Everything is as we would expect.
Then, then it all goes sideways. (This episode really shows how much darker SGA is compared to SG1. SG1 would have found a way for this episode to have a 'happy' ending. SGA gets real dark.) Then you have Todd starving to death. Then you have Rodney pleading with Sheppard to let him sacrifice himself for his sister. Then you have Sheppard absolutely refusing Rodney the right to go on this 'suicide mission'. Then you have Sheppard saving Rodney, saving Jeanne, and in a way, saving Todd, by presenting the opportunity of a worthwhile death to a man who has just lost his child.
You can see that Sheppard is sickened by what he's doing, but he's determined to keep Rodney from sacrificing himself. He knows that his orders aren't going to stop Rodney because Sheppard doesn't obey orders when the people he loves are in danger either. He knows he has to get ahead of Rodney and feed Todd. So, he does the one just thing that can be done. He presents an opportunity to the man who started this mess in the first place, an opportunity to set things right.
The last scene is so good and healing to Sheppard. He's just done something that ripped at his soul and Rodney knows it. Rodney comes and acknowledges the way Sheppard sacrificed himself for Rodney's sake. Because while that wasn't standing in front of a bullet or another suicide mission, Sheppard just made a huge sacrifice of himself for his friend. I love that so much. I also love that Rodney respects his desire to not talk about it, but doesn't leave him to sit alone and think about it either. He could have left Sheppard alone. He could have even found what Sheppard did so reprehensible that he abandoned him. But Rodney doesn't. He cherishes the sacrifice. I love that they head to the mess hall bickering like brothers. That last moment pushes back the darkness and the pain just a bit. Rodney accepts Sheppard's sacrifice and does his own tiny bit of healing for his broken friend.
Also, there's this perfect moment:
OK SORRY BUT NO my girl Mabel has 0 self preservation instincts. The end of s4 e9 was written by a man 100%. Girl, you grab that script and then tell the guy you need to go because you have an appointment you can't miss, and you book it the hell out of there. YOU DO NOT QUESTION THE MURDERER BY YOURSELF LMFAO GIRL YOU ARE GOING TO GET MURDERED AND HAVE YOUR BODY INCINERATED, GTFO!!! YOU CAN QUESTION HIM LATER IN A PUBLIC SETTING!!!!!
"In all ways but one, Lancelot was a man of honor" I HATE HOW THIS MAN WAS SLANDERED.
