I swear they're plastered with art nouveau wallpaper. Wall to wall picture frames with guilded filigree. Desks and shelves covered in tchotchkes but in a way that isn't tacky or too cluttered
Hakuba has very cut and dry diologue, but this is starkly contrasted by his bold faishion choices. Hakuba is just so flamboyant and cunty and i mean that in the most endearing way .
- Flirting has to be done with intention, can’t be something that is charming/romantic on accident
- For genuine feelings, Kaito and Heiji are both the recipients while Shinichi and Saguru are the ones confessing (decided bcs I wanted an even split and knew Kaito wouldn’t confess any real feelings under threat of death)
More specific thoughts under the cut (and blank chart at the bottom)
- Kaito does not flirt, he tugs at pigtails and pretends that counts, so flirting is a KID specific action. He has no shame in it since it’s all part of the act to him
- I personally hc him as asexual, but even without that, it’s pretty clear that flirting does nothing for him- seeing how he acted in the “date” episode and his 0 interest in valentines day and lack of reaction to Akako
- Mans can not deal with real emotions, especially if they seem like they’re out of nowhere
-and I think he’s the type that once you break past his poker face (which admittedly takes quite a bit) Boom. He’s broken. Shades of red only visible to shrimp and it goes all the way down to his shoulders.
- not much clarification needed for the first two with Shinichi, maybe that this is post-conan, which is why he gets awkward with flirting instead of gloating
- again since this is post-conan I think he makes an effort to be upfront about his feelings right off the bat, no chance for something to get in the way then.
-But he’s not the most self aware so it might take him a bit to puzzle out his emotions, as soon as he does I like to imagine him turning to the recipient of his feelings, and dramatically announcing his discovery, like it’s a deduction show. Finger point and all
- He’ll probably get embarrassed the next second when he realizes what he did
- Hakuba is just using standard high-class English niceties he learned from growing up rich in London, but he’s also observant enough to see that it clearly causes a reaction when used
- and I don’t think he’s above using that to his advantage, especially since he can be otherwise awkward at socializing
- although I don’t think he realizes it could be taken as leading someone on, since he doesn’t really have any intentions with it beyond gaining favor and he’s not quite aware enough to see the heart eyes directed his way
- I only did verbal flirting so in that case I think it mostly goes over Hakuba’s head (a combination of cultural differences and social obliviousness) but if you did more physical advances -alla holding his hand or bumping shoulders- then he would react by going stone still, completely tense and delightfully red!
- Like Shinichi I think Saguru prefers to be upfront with his feelings and would confess quickly after figuring out his feelings, sometimes it can be hard to be fully truthful but he finds it’s generally worth it in the end
- even if he’s rejected then he can move on instead of perseverate over the feelings
- Hattori is the character I know the least by my general vibe is that he sucks at intentional flirting (although tends to do things unthinkingly that knock people off their feet)
- He’s kinda a Tsundere? More in the sense that any attempts at flirting are more likely to be somehow taken as a slight and make him competitive, instead of landing at romantic as intended

i missed reading gosho boys fics, and steeplechase (+ riddle in reverse) by @ninthfeather was my first stop! thrilling as ever, so so so good. this breakfast scene is probably my favorite :DD
So there's this Saguru headcanon I've been toying with.
Instead of interpreting Saguru as Holmes-obsessed, his interest actually spans classical literature more generally, although with a more honed (obsessive) focus on certain niches (mystery, detective stories, stories about brilliant thieves, etc). Sherlock is still a character he definitely cherishes. But he actually cosplayed 'Holmes' (in an outfit Holmes never canonically wears, to be clear) as a little nod to Lupin vs Herlock Sholmes. Like. The thief he's starting to chase is a Kaitou/gentleman thief. He's dressed in all white with a goddamn tophat and cape. Saguru just wants to match the level of camp and play along.
I know this does contradict a piece of canon - in that he's still wearing his Holmes-esque outfit in a case that has nothing to do with KID (during his very first introduction). But an additional headcanon to account for this is that Saguru is avidly into historical fashion and deliberately wears it in his day to day life. Sometimes more subtly and sometimes not. I think another strong indicator of this is his pocket watch, which is certainly old fashioned. Also, I of course wouldn't be surprised if the deerstalker + inverness are also a comfort outfit for him.
And one additional thing to consider is that we haven't actually seen him quote Holmes at any point or really reference him at all. In contrast to Shinichi, the established Holmes fanatic, who has definitely quoted the Sherlock Holmes books. That is, of course, as far as I recall. It's possible that I'm misremembering.
Anyway, I just think it's a fun alternate interpretation! Not sure if I've fully embraced it, but I've been having fun exploring it.

like an au where Hakuba moves back to England for a period and transitions to being a woman. after some time she develops a scheme to come out to Schinichi, Kaito, and Heiji
it would likely be a deal where they’re all invited to her estate by her father to “solve saguru’s murder” who in reality isn’t dead, she just looks a little different than before and goes by a different name
I’d like to think she follows them around pretending to be a relative or friend and giving them lil hints until one of them gets it (probably kaito bc i think it would be funny if he had a “that’s so evil” moment, he would likely play along until another one of the buys gets it)
also trans Hakuba wears heels, she’s tall already but it’s a power move

Blue-eyed Saguru is scary so i gave him big baby cow eyes and also glasses bc he deserves them 🥰 also I'm a big fan of the 'Shinichi has chronic pain from the transformations to and from Conan' hc so he gets a cane yayyyyy also he's trans but the scars are covered by his terrible taste in fashion. This was v fun time spent that i should have been working on a paper shhhhhhhhh
