Modern AU where the capitol kids go to a fancy private school and the district kids go to public school. Their schools compete in several competitions, and before the story the peivate school kept winning for reasons that are very definitely not corruption the jury promised it. However, the organization running these events got a change of CEO and now the juries are actually fair. The rich kids used to gloat constantly about how superior they are, but now the district kids keep beating the rich kids at everything and it drives them up the fucking wall.

Obstacles

“Good luck, Drake. You’ll need it,” a voice voice piped up from behind him. He turned, raising a brow at the girl walking behind him.

Marinette Dupain-Cheng. The second smartest person at Gotham Academy, after him of course. She’d shown up at the end of last year and had quickly begun to challenge him for the top grades in class. The two quickly formed a rivalry, trying to best the other, having the best grades, winning any competition in PE, and just generally trying to one up the other.

“I should be saying the same to you.”

“Oh no. You’ll need all the luck you can spare. I’ve got more than enough to carry me to victory,” she replied passing him, pulling ahead into the gym. He shook his head as he entered after her, changing his focus to surveying the obstacle course that had been set up.

“Today we will take a quick walk through the obstacle course, before you all start running it. Hopefully we can get through everyone twice, timed. Fastest time will be recorded for tomorrow’s challenge. Yes, Andrew?”

“What will the challenge be?”

“You’ll find out tomorrow.”

The class walked through, as Mr. Willis explained what each part of the course was and the order it was to be run, before he lined them all up and sent them through one by one.

Tim watched Marinette as she made her way through the obstacle course. She looked unnervingly at ease moving through, climbing, and jumping off the unusual terrain set up in the gym. She moved similarly to Dick, almost as if she was an acrobat, though her movements weren’t quite as polished as his brother’s. For her first time seeing the course she moved with a confidence none of their peers had. She moved as if she’d had experienced and knew she wasn’t going to stumble despite the foreign terrain. He narrowed his eyes slightly.

Too much ease and confidence, he thought watching her. That section there tripped me up there, it’s tripped everyone and she hasn’t stumbled once this whole course.

She finished the course with a grin, sending a smug look his way as she finished.

Marinette tilted her head to the side as she watched Tim run the course. He was better than most of their classmates. He seemed sure in his movements, fast with his movements. He had a self-assurance that none of their classmates had. So far so smooth. Hasn’t fumbled once unlike the others- spoke too soon- she watched him trip, the same place everyone else had caution there then. He was good, she would admit that much with a small smile. It was nice having the competition. The rivalry without the bullying she was used to. It was refreshing.

“Today, you will be working in pairs to complete the obstacle course together. I’ve paired you all up based on the times from yesterday. You’ll be running this as a three legged race. Pairs will be as follows. Marinette and Tim,” Mr. Willis called. Tim tuned the names of the other pairings as he looked over at Marinette. She met his stare, grabbing the bandana from the pile and raised a brow tossing it at him.

“Truce.” she asked following the bandana. “I don’t want to be slowed down by our rivalry and I doubt you want to either.”

“Truce?”

“Great!” came the reply as she stuck out her hand, smiling as he stared at her for a moment. “That is unless you’d rather do a pinky promise.”

Tim shook her hand, giving her a small glare. She smirked at him as they broke the handshake. “Any preference to which side is trapped with mine?”

“My left to your right?”

“Perfect,” she replied snagging the bandana out of his hands and bending down to tie it around their ankles. “Come on.”

Tim stumbled slightly as she started moving, dragging him along with her, adjusting his step. “I saw you stumble yesterday on that section there. It helps to be light on your feet and stay towards the right, it’s banked to be shorter over there.”

“You noticed that while you were running the course yesterday?” Tim asked looking over, getting used to moving in time with her.

“Mhmm. It’s slight but it’s there.”

“How’d you figure that out so fast?”

“Everyone kept stumbling there, I figured something was up when you stumbled. One side is raised, designed to trip you up,” she explained. Tim blinked at her, shoving the impressed feeling down. Nope. She’s smart. I already knew this. I just didn’t realise how observant she was. No need to feel impressed. “Did you have anything specific you wanted to bring up before we run this?” she asked, breaking him out of his thoughts.

“Our running styles are different. You’re lighter on your feet, more acrobatic. I’m more grounded in my movements. We need to reconcile that difference if we aren’t going to just fall over ourselves moving.”

She nodded. “I was just planning to be more grounded in my movement. I figured it would be easier for me to ground myself than it would be for you to take off in the air. If we weren’t tied together, the difference would be nice, but I’m not trying to get pulled down, least of all by you.”

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“I’m not about to get slowed down because we have different movement styles. So I’ll adapt and you can keep doing your thing.”

“In my experience it isn’t that easy for people to change their movement styles, especially when yours looked so ingrained.”

“Well I’ve had experience with both, so I’ll adjust,” she informed him as they moved over to the side, watching the first few pairs stumble through the course. Soon enough it was their turn to run it.

He glanced over at Marinette who grinned at him. “Ready, partner?”

“Are you?”

“Always.”

“On your marks. Get set. GO!”

Marinette took off in time with Tim. The two of them keeping track of the other using their peripherals to keep track of the other while they focused on moving forward in sync.

“Jump on 3. 1. 2. 3, Now,” Tim muttered, to her, seeing the small nod she gave him. The two jumped over the barrier, clearing it. The landing was a little rough but nothing terrible as they kept going.

The two kept moving through, becoming more comfortable with the other as they moved, falling into a rhythm. The small stumbles between the two lessened as they went, and their communication improved. They finished the course, grins on their faces.

“Pretty decent job, Drake,” she told him, bending down to untie the bandana. “Enjoy your new freedom.”

Tim watched her leave, before moving to his next class. She kept up with me like it was nothing. Pushing the impressed feeling down once more he let the questions he had float through his mind as he made his way.

“Drake! Tim!” He turned hearing Marinette call his name. He raised a brow as she made her way over to him. “Here. Good work today. This is going to sound cheesy especially considering we’re in school but here. My card. Feel free to call if you want to try partnering something like that again or anything else.”

“Are you calling off our rivalry after one short partnership?”

“In your dreams, Drake. I’m just letting you know I’d be open for future partnerships. That is if you aren’t scared to,” she told him with a wink before turning around to leave. “Have a nice rest of your day.”

“You too, Marinette,” he said softly, glancing down at the card in his hand, pocketing it, promising himself he’d input the information in his phone later. Something was up with her. The best athletes in the class weren’t even that confident. She brought up questions he was itching to figure out and the impressed feeling was getting harder and harder to ignore. He glanced up towards where she was with her friends, meeting her eyes. She looked at him, brow raised with a small smirk.

“Oh, two can play this game, Marinette. Challenge accepted.”

Hello, I have a little block of ideas from February 5, 8 and 9 if you can give me an advice or idea I would really appreciate it and thank you very much.

I mean, for one, don't feel bad if you can't complete every single prompt, whether it be due to creator's block or other circumstances. I did note that "[y]ou can complete as many or as few prompts as you want" in the list of prompts. Lord knows I've never finished an entire ship week.

Post-Game Blues

Every red-blooded male student at Arcadia Oaks High knows how traitorous it is to fraternize with the Arcadia Oaks Academy Moonrats. Steve has a friend with cyan blood.

For the record, this is an AU where Wizards just doesn’t happen.

I have attended exactly one high school game in my entire life, and I spent most of it staring at the cheerleaders. Expect some artistic license on what little I wrote about the football game.

I couldn't remember the exact layout of Arcadia Oaks High, so I ended up replacing it with the layout of my own high school.

They had won.

Steve had led them to victory, and this was their moment of glory.

The Arcadia Oaks High Moles had beaten the Arcadia Oaks Academy Moonrats at tonight’s home game, and they could suck it!

As was tradition, after the game Steve went to find go find his friends. Except, this year, it wasn’t to go find his teammates. It stung, but Steve had grown up a lot in the past almost-half year. He’d gone from a self-absorbed jerk who picked on anyone he perceived as lame to a guardian who defended the city and didn’t take his anger out on those undeserving. Well, he didn’t do it often, anyways. His therapist said it would probably take a while for him to completely outgrow the toxic mindset his bio-dad had instilled in him, and his former friends had encouraged.

Unfortunately, Steve’s two best friends on the football team hadn’t even begun to outgrow the toxic mindset. There was a reason why Steve didn’t hang out with Seamus and Logan outside of practice anymore. Several reasons, actually, but they pretty much all came back to either the fact that Seamus and Logan were still acting like douchebags, or the fact that Steve had bonded in battle with people that he and his former friends had once dubbed lame.

So instead of going to find Seamus and Logan so they could celebrate their crushing victory over the moonrats with pizza and root beer, Steve walked around to go find Toby and Krel to… probably celebrate with pizza and root beer, anyways. Darci, too, since she was here anyways, and she was in their friend group. And for that matter, maybe they’d invite Mary too since she might’ve showed up, though hopefully she was supporting the proper team instead of using the game as an excuse to go make out with Tight Jeans Hank. If she was still together with him, anyways. Steve was pretty sure that Darci was the only one other than Mary who could still keep track of Mary’s whirlwind romances.

Steve jogged up to Toby and Darci where they were sharing an Italian ice near the entrance of the bleachers. “Hey, you two want to – where’s Krel?”

“He left the bleachers, like, five minutes before the game ended?” Toby said.

Steve pouted, but not just because that meant Krel would have missed Steve’s awesome touchdown. “Really? Did he seem okay?”

“I think he was just bored. You know how Krel is, not interested in sports.” And then Toby muttered something under his breath, probably something along the lines of “me either.” These days, most of Steve’s friends weren’t jocks like him. At least Toby was dating the mole, which meant that he was into a vital aspect of sports if not sports themselves.

“You know where he went?” Steve was, well, he wasn’t worried about Krel. He was just a tiny bit concerned. Ever since Krel’s parents had died and Aja had left, Krel had seemed so adrift. He’d grown even more distant in the past two weeks, and so Steve and Toby had dragged him to the game. Well, mostly Steve had done the dragging, with Toby giving pleading looks about not wanting to be alone for the game.

Toby shook his head and frowned. “Didn’t say. He was on his phone.”

And Krel was far too accident-prone to walk while staring at a screen, especially if he was in his human form like he tended to be whenever he didn’t want to attract attention.

“He’s probably not far. I’ll go looking for him.”

“Do you want us to come with you?” Darci asked “See if he’s okay?”

Krel was probably fine, but Steve still couldn’t shake the unease. Besides, this was Arcadia Oaks. The world had nearly ended three times last summer, and troll-and-extraterrestrial attacks happened all the time last year. Just because things were peaceful these days it didn’t mean they wouldn’t take a turn for the worse (especially if Eli’s texted wizard conspiracy theories were to be believed).

“Stay here, and I’ll text you if there’s trouble.”

And then Steve began his trek around campus. He didn’t need to go far, just over to the bungalows when he saw a familiar glowing cyan form, perhaps glowing a little brighter than normal. Like Steve had suspected, Krel wasn’t far.

Except, Krel’s form was obscured by the marching band uniform of Arcadia Oaks Academy. No, Krel wasn’t wearing it; he was far too loyal to betray the moles like that by affiliating with the moonrats. The marching band uniform was being worn by a dark-haired guy pinning Krel to the bungalow by his upper two wrists as the guy kissed Krel.

Steve knew Krel didn’t like the idea of romance or kissing. It wasn’t just him being grossed out by his family member dating; Krel had been so confused by Mary’s whirlwind love life, more than just about anyone else at the school. Krel had also joined Steve in demanding that Toby and Darci get a room for their PDA. Krel wasn’t the type of person to sneak away from a football game to go make out, so that meant that this moonrat piece of shit was…

Steve’s hands curled into fists as he quickened his pace. Steve didn’t have his bat with him, but he didn’t need it to take down a fellow human. Steve was a Creepslayer, and he would slay this creep.

But before Steve could get too close, he heard a clicking noise that made him slow his jog from surprise. He’d heard that clicking noise before, but only from Aja when she was in her Akiridion form. It was a noise that meant “yes please continue kissing me like that.” Aja had been concerned over the fact that a human moan could mean both pain and pleasure, while Akiridion moans only meant the former.

Krel clicked again, more loudly this time. He laced one of his lower hands through the guy’s hair, making a fist in it. The other hand Krel rested on the guy’s back, grasping at the back of his uniform before slowly making its way downwards.

“Krel?” Steve interrupted before the kissing and Krel’s hand could go any further, feeling and sounding embarrassed and confused from what he’d heard and seen. Krel quickly pulled his wrists down from where they’d been pinned and released the guy’s body from his other hands. The guy took a half step away from Krel, his long face very red. His eyes were wide, and he postured himself like he would protect Krel from Steve, should anything go wrong.

“Steve! What are you doing here?” Steve remembered how Krel had used almost the exact same tone and expression the last time Steve and Toby had shown up to drag Krel out of his lab. Away from something he enjoyed being alone with. He sounded more shocked and embarrassed now, so at least that made two of them.

“Looking for you.”

Steve watched as the guy – Krel’s secret moonrat boyfriend? – turned to whisper something in, well, Steve still wasn’t sure if Aja and Krel had ears under their clothes or not, but it was where a human ear would be. And as Krel turned to the guy, it was easy to see Krel’s face morph into something far happier. Krel whispered something back, and the guy’s stance relaxed.

“Sorry, didn’t mean to keep you from your friends for so long, love,” Krel’s boyfriend said. “I’ll, uh, I should probably go. Early shift tomorrow.”

“Stay safe, Douxie,” Krel said, and Steve raised an eyebrow. What kind of name was that? He knew the moonrats were weird and from the rich side of town, but he hadn’t ever heard a name that weird. Maybe it was some sort of Akiridion pet name. Steve wouldn’t have pegged Krel for the type of guy to use pet names for his boyfriend, but Steve also hadn’t pegged Krel for the type of guy to date anyone.

Krel kissed his boyfriend on the cheek. The moonrat grinned like Krel had hung the moon and stars before running off. Krel watched him go with a lovesick expression, even after his form had faded into the darkness. And then, Krel whirled on Steve, fury and determination in his posture.

“Aja learns none of this.”

Wait, Krel hadn’t told Aja? Even if Krel dating at all didn’t sound like him, it felt very wrong for Krel to keep something so big from his twin sister.

“Did he put you up to this?” Steve asked, glancing back to where Krel’s boyfriend had run off. “Not telling us?”

“What? No. I was the one who brought up not wanting to tell you guys, not Douxie.” Krel wrapped his arms around himself.

“That… don’t tell me that’s actually his name.”

“You’re correct,” Krel said, and oh was the weirdness continuing, because Steve had never heard Krel say those words to anyone in a tone that wasn’t annoyed or smug, but if anything, Krel’s tone was soft. Perhaps a little guarded, but soft. “It’s the last syllable of his name with a diminutive suffix.” Oh, great, Krel was branching out his nerdiness into linguistics. But also, who gave their kid a name with that syllable at the end? Steve almost felt bad for Douxie.

Almost. His suspicion outweighed his pity.

“But how’d he feel about you hiding your relationship from us?”

Krel shrugged, looking away. “I mean, he understands not wanting a reaction.”

“Not wanting a…” Lead sunk deep in Steve’s stomach as he remembered Douxie’s protective stance. Sure, Arcadia Oaks was a pretty accepting place, but it’d only been two years since gay marriage had become legal country wide. And Steve knew the stereotypes about football players because he’d almost been one of those stereotypes a year ago. The main difference was that the football team included a pair of gay guys who managed to embody all the rest of the lessons of toxic masculinity. Even then, Steve had gotten into fights with some of the other football players over his friends being gay. Now if only those friends would quit being assholes.

“Krel,” Steve began softly. “You do know that none of us will hurt or make fun of you for being gay, right? You or Douxie.” Besides, Steve was pretty sure Darci had two dads, and Toby was pan.

“I actually keep forgetting people have a problem with that, on Earth,” Krel said. “Even my parents would’ve accepted me marrying another man, as long as he was a high enough status, and one or both of us was willing to undergo a couple of temporary medical procedures so we could beget an heir.” Krel wrinkled his nose at the last few words, but as his face smoothed a dark look came with it. “I think some people have given Douxie problems for that. I wish I could find them. I’ve been working on some long-range serrator upgrades.”

Steve swallowed. He’d forgotten how scary Krel could look when he was angry. “When you said, ‘not wanting a reaction,’ what did you mean?”

Krel sighed and activated his transduction. “You’re already having a reaction.”

“Yes, well, if you’d just told me about you and Douxie instead of me walking in on you two, I wouldn’t be having a reaction.”

“Yes, you would. Not this same reaction, but you would. You all would. I know this isn’t normal for me. I don’t get these feelings.”

“I mean, yeah, you dating is pretty weird for you” – Krel glared – “but from what Aja told me you two were pretty sheltered, especially since you didn’t sneak out.”

“No, it wasn’t just how I was raised. Before Aja snuck out for the first time, she had already gushed to me about a dozen different crushes on intergalactic pop stars and athletes. I never had a single crush before this summer. I’ve never gotten these types of feelings for anyone. Ever. In my entire life. I didn’t even get feelings for Douxie until we’d known each other for weeks.”

“Wait, really? Not even a little crush?” Krel looked even more uncomfortable, so Steve decided to change the subject. “So, uh, how’d you and Douxie meet?”

“Well, we sort of, er, bumped into each other? A couple nights after… a couple nights after I decided to stay on Earth, that is.” Slowly, the melancholy look on Krel’s face turned into a smile. “Well, he claims we met at the Battle of the Bands, but I don’t remember so I don’t count that. I think that’s when he got a crush on me. And we kept texting, and I kept coming over to hang out with him at his shifts at the bookstore when I wasn’t working in my lab or hanging out with you guys. And then, a parson ago, I suddenly had feelings for him. I don’t know why, but one day we were friends and the next I was fighting against the realization I was in love with him.”

“When’d you two start dating?”

“Two weeks ago.”

“Oh, so that’s why you got all distant.” Steve swallowed down his school loyalty, as traitorous as it felt to do so. Douxie was a moonrat, but he also made Krel happy. “You should invite him to hang out with us sometime. It’d probably be easier than keeping him a secret.”

“Uh, no. They’re going to be all weird about us.”

“Only for a little bit! And they’ll probably have less of a reaction than me, as long as you tell them instead of making them find you two making out. Though, good luck telling Eli you’re dating a guy from our rival school.”

“Exactly! No one we both know is going to find out!”

grace thought she’d never have to hear that school name ever again when she moved to austin. until now.

all the colour drained out from her face the moment kelsey announced the arrival of the school. “they should be here by today afternoon,” the blonde said, “and they’re apparently going to have a joint practice session with our football team too.”

grace wouldn't have cared if it was the incredibly smart debate team that came over, or even just the dance team. their football team was coming, too. for a game. grace didn't have a good past with them, and neither did she ever came to accords with them, with him.

they said heartbreak and sin came in the form of everything you desired for. and that was dennis coleman. of course he was the package deal. blue eyes, killer smile, the nicest and most considerate boy you’d ever meet. he was the picture-perfect private school boy.

God, it really has been some time since she last thought of him willingly. it had been almost two years now, but the pain she went through because of him was still fresh in her mind, and probably always will be. but she was better now. maybe she never found peace with him, but she found it within herself. she was a confident and independent woman who didn't need anyone. she had daniel, whom she wanted, not needed. she had her friends who’d stick by her always. she could leave dennis and everything else that was linked to him in the past.

but, could he?

“well, well, well, look at what we have here!”

daniel, jo and the team turned to face forward, only to have the shittiest teams in the world in their faces. their captain looked especially smug today.

“yeah, the world’s biggest cry baby.” daniel sniggered, as did the rest of his team. dennis’ smug look left his face for a split second, before recovering with a harsh look. “it was one time, williamsson. get over it.”

did this kid really want daniel to forget the fact that he made him cry at a football game?

before he could have a say, the other captain started speaking again. “i must say... for a public school, you guys do have some kind of standards. although, i can't speak for its team.” he flashed a smirk, and his team backed him up by laughing and coughing out words like ‘rekt’ and ‘public losers’.

“speak for yourself,” jo started, taking a step forward to be right next to daniel, “i mean, you guys have the longest name of all school history.” he paused, before continuing with a smirk. “hey, isn't your school acronym dick? how symbolic.”

daniel couldn't help but chuckle. he then went over a doubling fit when he noticed the glares jo, him and the entire team was receiving from the rival school. they really were sore private school trash, he thought.

“har de har de har, penetrator jo.” vincent, the co-captain, spoke up, and walked up to be face-to-face with him. “hey, congrats on that new girlfriend, by the way. i’d love to meet her.” he gave a cheeky smile, making jo lose his smirk and replace it with a growl.

daniel stretched his arm out in front of jo, so that he wouldn't do anything stupid while vincent taunted him. but little did he know that it was going to be him who needed restraint the moment dennis reopened his mouth.

“speaking of girlfriends!” dennis clapped his hands, “how could we forget about our very own daniel williamsson’s? the biggest playboy of all of Texas, settled down?” he faked a surprised look. “shocker!”

daniel subconsciously lay his hand back down to his side, his relaxed look turning into a suspicious one. “and what about it?” he challenged.

dennis’ eyebrow raised. “oh, so gracie-wacie never told you? about her, and me?”

suddenly, it hit daniel. that guy grace told him about, and the private school she used to go to. both, were here. on that very field.

daniel clenched his fists. out of rage, fear, and jealousy. rage, because of the way dennis was talking. fear, that grace could leave him for this trash, and jealousy. because grace was in love with this guy.

dennis’ evil smug look became more prominent the moment he realised that he hit bullseye. “oh, so she did tell you the story, but not who it was? that won her heart? who she loved?”

“you fucking prick,” daniel gritted his teeth, already taking a step forward, “you didn't deserve her!”

before he could swing his fist at dennis, a voice broke out. “daniel!”

he would've recognised that voice from anywhere. grace. his grace. he involuntarily relaxed at the sight of her, but he was still ready to throw a punch. grace joined them down at the field. she knew something like this would happen. she knew dennis wouldn't play nice.

“gracie!” dennis suddenly didn't sound so evil anymore. he sounded like an angel, a boy in love. “i’ve missed you. so much. you don't even reply to my texts.” he pouted.

he’s been texting her? “don’t fucking call her that, y-”

grace touched his face, and the rest of his sentence died down in his throat. “hey, donald,” she whispered, “you can't let him get into your head, okay? you can't get benched because of him.”

daniel took in a deep breath. grace always calmed him down. she was his anchor.

“how fucking adorable,” dennis cooed, his tone dripping in venom, “you met someone new, gracie. but remember, you're never going to find someone like me.” he turned his head towards daniel. “and to you? have fun with my sloppy seconds.”

that’s it. that was the last straw.

“jo! guys!” grace yelled out for help, and immediately did the rest of the boys hold daniel back. it did require a lot of strength to restrain an angry daniel. “let me fucking go!” he roared, but the team didn't move. usually, they did listen to their captain, but when grace was on field, she was their captain.

grace looked back at dennis, who was proud of the disaster he cooked up. she took a step forward, towards him. daniel suddenly stopped struggling. what was she...

“you’re right. i’ll never find someone like you.” she agreed with him. dennis’ smile brightened, while daniel thought he felt something die inside.

“but that’s just the point, dennis. i never want to find someone like you ever again.” she said, and dennis went into pure shock. “i have someone who treats me the way i should be treated and loves me for who i am.” she pointed back at daniel, “he’s the complete opposite of you, and i’m glad i found someone like him, who isn't a coward to embrace who he really is. and i love him.”

dennis, along with his team, were in stunned silence. they didn't realise that grace was a changed person now, someone who stood up for herself.

daniel’s teammates let go of him, but he didn't need anymore restraint.

because all the restraint he had both physically and mentally, was from grace olsen. and she was all he needed. and maybe he wasn't her first love, but she was his, and she loved him now.

that was all that mattered.
