STEM side of tumblr! What are y'alls favorite programs for creating graphics for posters, such as showing molecular models? I usually use PowerPoint to create my posters, but I dont want to use it to create my visual models :^/

As a grad student, I prefer free materials/programs that university would cover for me! Ty in advance 🥺

Science Saturday!

Today we are presenting an early 20th century entomology wall chart titled Orthoptera, the order of insects that includes grasshoppers, locusts and crickets. Even though this chart is labeled Orthoptera, it also includes a cockroach (insect order Blattodea) and an earwig (insect order Dermaptera). The chart was mounted and sold by Denoyer-Geppert Company in Chicago, which still sells scientific models and wall charts.This chart is drawn from a collection of over 100 scientific wall charts in Special Collections.

hi Hallie! just started my 2nd year of med school and our first assignment is to design a scientific poster - I think I remember a while back that you made one that you presented? do you have any tips on how to create one or have any good examples of some that you used as inspiration! PS - loving seeing your posts now that you're a doctor, was amazing to watch your transition from med school to now!! xx

Hey! Yeh I made a poster for a presentation at uni as part of my masters and in medical school too. 

My main tips are:

- make it on microsoft powerpoint. May seem obvious, but I had no idea and tried to make it on Word at first which is a no-no

- dont go too crazy on the colour, but still make it stand out. No one really wants to be dazzled by rainbow posters, but also it’s boring to just have it black and white. I’d make my header a different colour, and my tables and things, to spice it up a bit

- have it split up into CLEAR different sections, in a way that’s easy to follow. I have mine in 3 columns, with clear headings stating which bit is the introduction, conclusion etc. 

- don’t have the writing too small! and use bullet points where you can

- here’s a sortof template of one of mine that I made - I’ve taken the contents out apart from the diagram because it could be identifying

Super excited to see my poster for VUSec on Delta Pointers being presented today at Eurosys in Porto, Portugal! I'm proud of the researchers for coming up with such a nifty way to prevent buffer overflow attacks, and grateful for the opportunity to learn about it and help them explain to others what they did. It's a pretty wild realization that so much of our world today depends on technology only few people really understand. And even those people are uncovering new vulnerabilities, exploits, and altogether mysteries every day. I have the utmost respect for these experts who keep our machines running and it's quite tragic they rarely get the respect they deserve simply because what they do is so difficult to understand. It's like these ideas are trapped. As an illustrator, to me there are few things more rewarding than freeing trapped ideas. I experienced this with my graphic journalism project for NRC on the refugee crisis, based on research from inside a camp in Greece, and I felt it again when drawing out this research and seeing how it was used. It allowed one of the researchers to explain this to even his non-technical mother, and I'm positive she could pay forward the core idea with the help of this poster. I'm also including some process work where the concept was explained to me 1 on 1 and choosing a composition together. Finally some pics of the poster in action outside at the sunny conference :) I'll be looking for select projects in a similar vein soon.
