I just saw your post about where you were on 9/11. I was a student at Jefferson Elementary- the closet public school to Scott AFB. One of the things that sticks out the most was how that day mine weren’t the only parents picking kids up at school. So many parents, many of them in uniform showed up to make sure everyone got home, when usually people rode the bus or walked home.
It was tense, for sure. Nobody knew what was going to happen next. We lived on base, so we didn't have to go through the ID checks to get through the gates. Our kids hadn't started school yet. I wasn't worried that Scott itself might be a target, but again, nobody knew.
I had orders to transfer to the US Embassy in Muscat, Oman. That got put on hold for a bit. My family was able to join me after the first of the year. Oman was very US-friendly. We never felt in danger there at any time.

HEADS UP ANYONE STAYING AT SCOTT AFB EVER
Ask for the Huyeser House. The water to my hotel went out (second time!) but they weren't able to fix it so we all had to move. Luckily this is my last night so I was planning on packing my car anyway. But this place is 100x nicer than my room at the Scott Inn, so I'm a little annoyed I spent 4 weeks in a comparatively crummy room.

Died in Kabul, Afghanistan in the crash of a British Puma Mk2 helicopter. The incident remains under investigation. Kuhse was assigned to the 3rd Manpower Requirements Squadron at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois.
