an odd long-last side effect of being able to read music i was not prepared for, is that in high school choir the teacher had me sing anything from first soprano to alto depending on what needing propping up (and sometimes it differed by year [oh joy]), so now when i listen to popular songs (read, holiday crap that everyone is inundated with) which part i find myself singing is  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Second Sopranos - What mistake? How do you even make a mistake when you have one task; To sing an Eb for the whole song.

Is a mezzo soprano the same thing as a second soprano?

Well, mezzo soprano is a vocal classification and second soprano is a choral classification.  That is, when you divide up the choir, you can divide it up into soprano one, soprano two, etc.  Sometimes they meant the same thing, and second soprano usually is a lower, harmonized part, but not always!  Sometimes there are more than two soprano parts, in which case second soprano may still be singing more in the soprano range, if that makes sense!

Second sopranos are highly unappreciated. There are literally 5-6 of us on any given day in concert choir, compared to at the very least 18 first sopranos, 20 something altos, 7 tenors, and like 10 bass/baritones. And the director is always saying he "needs more second" like um the marking is pianissimo and we are singing fortissimo what more do you want

That song...

"Fly me to the moon" is beautiful and I really like it.

But it´s a pain in the ass to sing the second soprano in that. Every single damn time we all struggle to find the right note in the beginning.

Second Sopranos are always fucked....

I am a second soprano in the University of Glasgow's Choral Society.  It was wonderful to be a part of such a lovely performance even if you can't technically see me (I'm over to the left, behind a rather tall gentleman, when the camera pans, you might just catch a glimpse.)
