They're partially for the way he styles and sees himself - a relatively recent arrival who has risen through the ranks through a combination of ruthlessness and cunning, but with a limited kind of loyalty that embraces a tiny circle of people he's truly loyal to (the other Vee's).

The fact that Adam was the first human soul to enter Heaven implies that Abel, the first human to die, ended up going to Hell. Realizing that his son, someone who he would have always thought of as innocent, someone who died because he was apparently favored by Heaven, didn't even get in, probably fucked with him and his perception of sin permanently.
