Okay, I just learned we got the worlds first nonverbal voice actor, and as a semi verbal person who has wanted to see more AAC users in media FRIGGIN FINALLY. Seriously, I’m just happy people understand that the statement ‘nonverbal voice actor’ is not an oxymoron.

Edit: People kept bringing up Madison Bandy, who played Renee in the Pixar short film ‘Loops.’ She is indeed earlier. Some news articles were misrepresenting Odin Frost. However, he is the first nonverbal voice actor in a kids show, and Paulo, the character he portrays, is the first full time AAC user in a kids show, as far as I’m aware.

This Disabled Pride Month, shout-out to those who have trouble talking, no matter what that looks like for you. The semi-verbal and semi-speaking. The non-verbal and non-speaking. Those with stutters. Those who get word salad. Those have trouble processing language. Those who have a very limited vocabulary. Those who lose speech. The selectively mute. Those who have been mocked for their voice or difficulty speaking. Those who can't stand the sound of their own voice and get too distressed by it to speak. Those whose throats have been damaged. Those who find their dissociation makes it harder to speak. Those whose echolalia or tics or whatever else interrupts their speech. Those who struggle to understand or piece together sentences. Anyone else who experiences any sort of difficulty or inability with speech for whatever reason. And if any of this sounds like nonsensical spit-balling. Guess who's having a time of it today and just hoping to hell this post is coherent lol. I hope we all have a great day in which we're not pressured to go past our limits or pretend to be normal and don't get mocked or sneered at or anything. I hope we can all just be.

here’s to disabled people who can’t speak/struggle to speak. wether it be a physical thing, mental thing, or both, it’s okay. you’re not any less a person for it.

I am a semiverbal autistic that uses AAC!

Here’s what semi-verbal means to me and why I specifically refer to myself as one:

-I struggle with speech DAILY

-Speech takes effort

-I have articulation issues at my baseline

-I have complete verbal shutdowns at times

-I experience stutters, repetition, etc

-I have the ability to speak

Why I do NOT refer to myself as semi-verbal:

-I am stressed and not talking in the moment

See the difference?

AAC helps me when I get frustrated and overwhelmed that I can’t get my point across or if I just genuinely am unable to talk in the moment.

Oh, thank you! Its my autism lol. I have a need to overcompensate and overexplain everything, so making blogs like these really helps, because it gives me an excuse to do exactly that.

In my offline life, I feel extremely intimidated to speak aloud, and often vocally shutdown. I have a lot to say, but struggle to find the words to say it. This means I often come off very unclear, and have been misunderstood constantly throughout my life. The words are in my head, but they don't transfer to my mouth properly.

I use AAC devices in the innerworld most of the time (I do not have an AAC machine in the outerworld unfortunately), and only speak vocally on occasion.
