Before they get back in the Bronco, Bradley slings his arm around Natasha. He peppers the side of her head with kisses. She scratches gently at his ribs before pulling away and Jake, watching with one foot in the door, wonders if he ever stood a chance.

OOOOOH. Pearl Harbor is such a good movie. i'd have to get rid of the death though. The supposed death can stay, but that's it haha. I think the question then becomes were they all together before or was it like, two of them together and then the other two when Bradley goes missing, the whole time there's this element of bradley and jake too, then it becomes all three. OOH it could be they were all childhood friends and grew up together. Bradley and Nat start dating cuz it just makes sense, but they always include Jake in everything, like they hate not including him. Everything goes down and they realize it was never just the two of them, like he was always equally included and they *want* that. Forever. It doesn't work without him. (It would definitely have to be one of those- we all are together or none of us situations.)

jake dies, and he feels no pain.

that’s what they tell bradley, at least. no pain on impact. and while the plane has been recovered, he has nothing to bury. nothing to cling to but a memory.

jake dies, and he’ll be remembered.

that’s what they tell natasha, and she can’t help but laugh. because jake seresin’s never had trouble having others remember him, always knew how to fill a room.

jake dies, and he leaves a hole where he lived in those who he loved, and all they can do to lean on each other, and wonder what else could possible fill that gap.

the f-18 roars over their heads. natasha grips the wooden railing, wanting to run into the ocean and collapse to her knees all at once. bury her head in the sand and let the days pass her by. anything is easier than this. than this ache.

it’s been a while since they’ve seen a cockpit. the navy wants to know when they’ll be back.

“he’d want us to fly,” bradley whispers to her, voice barely audible above the tide. “you know that.”

she sighs, glancing toward the clear blue sky, the bright california sun. thinks how unfair it is that the whole world hasn’t ended now. “then he shouldn’t have left us behind,” she says back.

bradley has no answer. nothing left to offer but his arm around her. he pulls her close, kisses her head, and stares at the horizon. closes his eyes and pretends the ocean breeze is jake’s hands on his face, on his waist, in nat’s hair.

“we should’ve been there,” natasha says suddenly. her voice is hoarse, pained. “i wish… we were there for him.”

the breeze becomes a gust. and for a moment, it’s a comfort. for a moment, it’s all jake can say.

“i think we were,” bradley tells her, and it’s a certainty. a knowledge beyond words, as he opens his eyes. lets the illusion of jake’s hands shatter and the tears fall. “but i — i wish he was here instead.”

there’s not much more to say. no one to fill the too-long silence, no one to wrap them up and hold them tight. so they hold each other, the love they have left, and for a moment there’s another illusion, the gentle breeze as a kiss goodbye.
