"On one hand, they could absolutely make each other worse. Nobody in this ship is saying “maybe we should be less intense about this.” They would escalate any argument into a war council within five minutes. But also, I think they’d be able to see through each other’s conditioning in a way that’s surprisingly useful. Minthara would recognise the shape of religious control around Lae’zel, even if she explains it in the most blunt and drow way possible. Lae’zel would recognise Minthara’s survival instincts as discipline rather than just cruelty. They’d probably insult each other while helping each other unpack lifelong indoctrination. romance!!!"

vs. Gale/Shadowheart

"In the brothel Shadowheart can be "worshipped" by the drow sex workers and she seems quite into it. A guy that used to actually date a goddess? Yeah, Gale's gonna be ready for that. On a less silly note, they've got that shared trauma of possibly having a crisis of faith during the game, and they can relate to each other on that. As a cleric, there's opportunities for Shadowheart to try to help Gale with his oopsies dark magic poisoning. Or they can make each other worse, with Gale's God complex and SH's conditioning to follow a religious leader blindly. OR a Selunite SH might have to fight a formerly-romanced Gale if he becomes a God and fucks around too much! So many opportunities for fluff or angst! And maybe I just think Gale getting lovingly dommed by a goth GF could fix him, ok."

Chapter 1: Et Alibi

Excerpt:

In the campsite behind them, Karlach let out an ear-splitting roar of laughter as Halsin lost his battle with sobriety, wildshaped into a cave bear, and collapsed in a heap of fur and claws next to the central fire, fast asleep.

At Astarion’s insistence, the morose bard Withers had hired for the occasion struck up a tune livelier than the weepy ballad he’d been playing for the last hour, and Wyll started circling the grounds, recruiting dancers.

With a singular goal, Gale and Shadowheart huddled together behind the nearest rocky outcropping, concealing themselves from Wyll’s immediate line of sight.

“I’ve nothing against dancing in principle—” Gale began, at the same time Shadowheart muttered, “I’ve had both too much and not enough wine for that sort of frivolity.”

They stared at one another, eyes shimmering in the moonlit night.

Before the silence could stretch from common amusement into shared awkwardness, and before Shadowheart could decide she would rather participate in a Baldurian Waltz, after all, rather than endure his company any longer, Gale reached for her.

His fingers brushed against the back of her gloved hand, and she went very still, her eyes the same glinting obsidian of volcanic glass, her lips pressed into a pale, tight line.

Slowly, she pulled her hand out from beneath his, her fingers curling in against her palm. But she didn’t leave. She sipped at her wine, and tipped her head back, and looked at the stars.
