Julian: “Lex malla, lex nulla.”
Emma: “I wonder what other family mottos are. Do you know any?”
Julian: “The Lightwood family motto is ‘We mean well.’”
Emma: “Very funny.”
Julian: “No, really, it actually is.”
Emma: “Seriously? So what’s the Herondale family motto? ‘Chiseled but angsty’?”
Julian: “‘If you don’t know what your last name is, it’s probably Herondale’?”
Emma: “What about Carstairs? ‘We have a sword’? ‘Blunt instruments are for losers’?”
Julian: “Morgenstern, ‘When in doubt, start a war’?”

A lot of people have chosen Herondale as their Shadowhunter names. And while I love the Herondales very much, I think I would honestly prefer to be a Lightwood.
Shadowhunter family names + Latin mottos
Fairchild - Alis volat propriis (”She flies with her own wings”) Herondale - Per ardua ad astra (”Through adversity, to the stars”) Lightwood - Aut invenium viam aut faciam (”I shall either find a way or make one”) Morgenstern - In hoc signo vinces (”In this sign you will conquer”) Carstairs - Veritas vos liberabit (”The truth shall set you free”) Blackthorn - Esse quam videri (”To be, rather than to seem to be”) Branwell - Sapere aude (”Dare to be wise”)
Verlac?
I can’t even really believe that “Verlac” is a shadowhunter’s last name. Where’s the compound? Where is the haughty air to it? Where is an element of nature or magic? Verlac is not an awe-inspiring shadowhunter last name.
