It’s really interesting to me to see all the different reads of the ‘we didn’t even kiss’ scene, because I interpreted it quite differently.

I didn’t see it as Shane being upset or angry with Ilya or him being traumatised by the lack of affection (I’ve genuinely seen this take.) - I saw it as Shane being upset/angry with himself for wanting more. He types out the text, deletes it, and then says ‘fuck’- because he’s started to realise he wants more, whatever ‘more’ is, and cannot have it.

At this point in the narrative, Shane is still in denial about his feelings, still not putting a name to them. The feelings are there- he just can’t articulate them. For me, it perfectly compliments the scene where Ilya is staring himself down in the mirror during the Rose Landry shit- Ilya is angry at himself, not Shane.

Neither one of them thinks they could have more with the other, because it’s an impossible situation- it doesn’t stop them wanting.

It’s crucial as well to note that neither of them really blames the other- that’s why each time there’s a setback, they’re incredibly quick to forgive. They both understand what the situation is.

I feel like saying Shane was led on or taken advantage of completely strips him of his agency. They both take what they can get of the other, whenever they can get it, because it’s a comfort to both of them.

Shane is never put in a situation he doesn’t want to be in, with Ilya. He’s a grown man who can make informed choices, he’s not some starry eyed groupie trailing after Ilya for scraps, and Ilya never once manipulated him.

to me the tuna melt scene will always read as shane realizing ilya had the same feelings for him that he had for ilya and THAT scaring him way more than his own feelings for ilya do. Cause thats the thing about myshane . he can have his desire all he wants + live denying it but as soon as ilya invites him to have that desire be Okay then it is Real. He can want to be fucked but it only scares him when ilya invites him to think of that desire as Something he could Actually Have.... He can love ilya + torture himself for it privately and at that point in the story it was what he Wanted to keep Doing....

Thinking about the differences between Shane and Ilya’s early careers and I don’t know how it was in Russia, but I can imagine Shane billeting in like fucking Sherbrooke or some shit when he’s 16, far from home but known as the guy who’s gonna get drafted. Like, barring something disastrous, it’s clear. And this is a fucking multi-edged sword for him, because on the one hand, in terms of skill and play, Shane Hollander is the man. However, he is also quiet and not super interested in socializing and queer and not white.

Shane has to deal with chirps about his race all the time. Chirps about his marked lack of body hair compared to his peers, his pretty face, the fact that his mom is so hands on (thinking of one particular phrase here). Shane is constantly feminized because he’s Asian, and it doesn’t help that he’s such a goody two shoes - I mean, fuck, Holly’s kill count is 1 because he’s so committed to his fucking girlfriend. And I think he can get away with that because of his skill. I think his quirks in the name of keeping up his performance saves him a lot of the time, but it wouldn’t protect him from everything. It can’t. Hockey has a very bro-y herd mentality and if you don’t gel with the team you’re out. Which means he has to gel, and at that level that means being one of the boys.

So, while Shane isn’t necessarily hazed as consistently and violently as the rest of the rookies, I think he is hazed, and it is fucked up. And it fucks him up specifically, because he’s starting to heavily suspect (read: in his heart he knows) that he likes guys. And yeah, he doesn’t have to drink dick beer (he would die before allowing himself to show weakness in front of these guys he doesn’t care he can’t lose), but he feels violated and terrified the whole time he’s doing pushups, because what if the rest of them can tell? What if there’s something about him that gives himself away? It’s not just his career that’ll be ruined (before it even starts). He’s 16, there are guys in the room that are fucking 20. They’re men. And I mean, it’s tough for Shane to tell when something is and is not considered gay when it comes to this shit so he stays out of it all, but what the fuck will they do to him if they find out? Or what will they make him do if they think he’ll like it?

I know that Heated Rivalry is romance and fiction but in the same way that I think there is so much interesting shit to dig into re: the fact that Shane plays for Montreal where hockey is basically a religion, we could have some really interesting conversations about how it’s really likely that Shane would have been incredibly traumatized by growing up in hockey culture because of his race, sexuality, and the fact that the culture is fucked to begin with. I think experiences like that shape how you inhabit the closet and how paranoid you get in protecting a piece of your identity that could actually have physically harmed you if it had gotten out. Add the Montreal of it into the mix, and yeah, I would be fucking paranoid about everything too. And it would take me a very very long time and copious hours of therapy to like, actually feel settled and comfortable after being outed.

I think it’s super stupid that Shane comes out to his team in TLG and here’s why.

We already know that in canon, his team reacted sort of apathetically, and didn’t give him any sort of positive reaction (apart from not hate criming him I guess?) but tbh we’re given no reason as to why he wants to come out to them and I don’t even think it makes sense with his character.

If I had to make a change, I think he should have told JJ about Ilya around the time that Hayden figured it out, and have his two close friends on the team be the ones who know. We’re given no indication that Shane is close enough with the rest of the guys to the extent that he will want to be out to them when he’s already filled with so much anxiety over how people perceive him and the public reaction to who he really is.

It makes more sense for his two closest friends (and his winger and defender) to know his secret rather than his entire team who has already sort of dismissed him as a homebody introvert who doesn’t date. He doesn’t gain anything in their eyes from them knowing he’s gay, and his coach won’t do anything about a negative reaction because he believes that he should have kept it to himself. And the reason his coach has for saying that is homophobic as hell, but I don’t think Shane would disagree with the message of it. His sexuality has nothing to do with his team members (with whom he is not close) and so I don’t think he would need them to know. Idk I just hate the whole situation in TLG with his team and how I don’t think #myshane would even allow that to become a possibility.

i disagree with the way most people interpret "shane doesn't listen to music" tbh. i think shane doesn't dislike music he just doesn't really have an interest. he won't turn on the radio when he's driving but he doesn't really care if other people do. he's not listening to music when he works out. I do think he likes some music! he's just not particularly passionate about it. most of what he likes is stuff he's heard on the radio or that his parents played in the car when he was younger. he can even hum along to some of them. he just doesn't play music a lot, his Spotify wrapped would be like. under a thousand minutes a year.

however I do feel in my heart that avril lavigne Let Go was deeply formative for young shane.

i am such an anti mercedes!shane in f1 aus. everyone is under lewis hamilton & 2021 title fight induced spells i tell you. it's not about the significance of the person it's about the suffocating historical pressure of the team. shane hollander is a ferrari driver. it's probably the only team that reflects montreal and bridges the gap between hockey as a team sport and f1 as an individual one*. he's a multi-wdc winner who brings glory back to maranello after years of drivers who crash against the dream of the reds. somehow his Racing IQ can overcome the general incompetency that is the ferrari pit wall. he stands on the top step of the podium at monza and he cries at the sea of red and the deafening roar of the tifosi. every italian dreams of kissing him gently in the moonlight. they have pictures of him as a saint and burn candles in his name every race weekend. he'll never recover from that kind of devotion. shane "if being in a cage equals being in ferrari, then i would like to be in a cage for my entire life" hollander. now put him in a situationship with his rival and see what happens. torture blender

Adding on to that other post, so many people seem to think Shane feels ‘used’ by Ilya, despite the fact that there’s no textual or subtextual evidence to support that. I think this goes hand in hand with people interpreting the relationship through a very heteronormative lens.

We’re used to seeing imbalanced power dynamics between heterosexual couples in media, to the point where it’s expected that one party in a relationship ultimately does feel ‘used’, but that’s not remotely what’s happening with Hollanov.

It’s easy to take things like the Balcony scene in Ep 1, or the infamous Bathroom scene/we didn’t even kiss scene in Ep 2 at face value- but the show consistently asks us to look for more, to delve deeper than surface level, because they’re not going to spoon feed meaning to us.

Shane’s self worth isn’t so low as to stoop to beg a man he thought was using him.

Ask yourself why you’d think that- why you’d think that Ilya not replying to a text for six months is any different to Shane swerving Ilya for two whole years.

Is it because you subconsciously view Shane as the ‘woman’ in this heteronormative dynamic you’re pushing onto them? And by that logic, Shane is more vulnerable? Is it because Shane is Wasian, or a bottom, or slightly more submissive sexually?

Whether or not people want to admit their own internal biases, these play a massive factor in the general audience read of Shane as a character, and because of that you end up with a character that’s actually entirely different to what’s being explicitly or implicitly shown to you on screen.
