Shield Bearer with the Ducal Arms of Saxony, honestone (ca. 1520) Hans Daucher (German, ca. 1485–1538) sculpted this sentinel to guard the entrance to Duke George the Bearded's funeral chapel at Meissen Cathedral, Saxony, Germany. Commissioned by the duke to display his family coat of arms, only this figure survived from the original pair, the other is lost. Evidence suggests the figure once wore lead or wooden wings. Loc. The Met, New York. Dim. 49.2 cm H x 20.6 cm W (19 3/8 x 8 1/8 in.).

I need a Shield Bearer

I wore my shining armor, a complete set, and head out for battle.

The battlefield is large and the soldiers are few.

Streams of arrows fall over my shield and plates, some pierced me like a knife.

The Commander declared the battle is ours

Still at times I have to fall back and restore my wounds.

I come home bleeding with tears, no one is around.

Resting my body I brace myself for tomorrow’s battle…

Holding my head up as I request for my shield bearer.

  Indeed, I need a shield bearer.

  Surely it will come, as our Commander is wise.

He knows each of his soldiers’ needs and weaknesses.

  I should not lose hope.

This battle will surely be won.

Horns of triumph are already on the loose.
