A Siddur belonging to Marilyn Monroe, complete with her annotations in pencil. many remember her as a sex symbol who lived a difficult life, but few know of her conversion & devotion to Judaism.
"Everybody's always out to get them, no matter what they do," said Monroe. "like me."
On this week's episode of "Cool Siddurim with Tal"*, we have...
Koren's Amsterdam Shabbat Chumash!
Originally printed in 2017 for Amsterdam's Portuguese Sephardic community and on sale for a short period of time afterwards, this Chumash is unique in two ways: first, the parshiot and haftarot are arranged according to the Pisa Chumash and second, the Shabbat Tefillah is arranged according to the Spanish and Portuguese (S&P) rite**.
Unlike other bilingual siddurim that Koren offers, instructions in this Chumash are in English and Dutch.
And, as a plus, there's a neat little guide in the back that shows the reader how announcements are done in this community.
Out of all the siddurim I've encountered, this one is definitely at the top of the list because it's so niche. I've been looking for it for almost a decade since it's out of print. It's also gorgeous. (I'm not entirely sure my pictures do it justice.)
Alas, this isn't my siddur. I'm borrowing it for a few months and then I have to give it back, but until then I plan to daven with it.
If there are any siddurim that people are interested in seeing and hearing my thoughts about, drop an ask. If I have it, it'll show up here.
*title still a work in progress. Also, this might not be a weekly thing.
**Amsterdam's S&P rite in this siddur differs slightly from the S&P rite as presented in the de Sola Pool siddurim that are found at Shearith Israel (NY). It doesn't contain glosses that include prayers that are recited by Eastern Sephardim and Mizrahim, since the latter was meant to be a quasi-pan-Sephardic siddur before R. Ovadia Yosef's z"l take on the Edot HaMizrach nusach came into the picture.

Oh my god there goes my night. Okay FIRST of all, I was 100% correct (I'm live-blogging their live-blogging of this siddur lmao)
So basically what this antizionist siddur did is go "OK so anytime you see the word Israel, just say The Hebrews or Ami for some reason (why is it Ami lmao wtf does it all MEAN????) It will sound very normal Trust Me
Pretty much "Baruch atah adonai aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand that's a wrap" lmao
Then they immediately forget about their rule I guess lol
Ah yes, the phenomenally genocidal purchasing of land
At this point I'm just repeating kosher-toasty because literally what in the fuck am I reading, okay MOVING ON I WILL CONTRIBUTE SOMETHING NEW AND WONDRIOUS
OK so basically Uyun al-Qarah wasn't some town or something they WERE LITERALLY THE WELLS lol.
Zionists didn't roll up into a town and buy the land and kick everyone out, it was a COUPLE OF WELLS, DUMMY, NOBODY LIVED THERE. There was no APARTHEID, there was nothing THERE. Uyun al-Qarah was a WATERING HOLE you gibberish fucking people.
Sorry I'm back to repeating kosher toasty. the sacred mosque BUILT ON TOP OF OUR SACRED TEMPLE MOUNT????? LOL?????
Do Iranians mean nothing to you? Hundreds of thousands of Iranians died and were injured within literal days, dummy. That's what it looks like when the government kills civilians indiscriminately.
Go complain to the IRGC that it's "faster and more efficient than any other armed conflict in history" (Russia alone openly brags about killing 500,000 Ukrainians but you don't give a fuck about that either lol)
If I read anymore Im going to have a stroke so this is part 1 of my adventures
Given to me this mother's day by my aunt - she can't remember who in the family had it prior to her. My mom has one in ivory from 1917 - a gift to her grandmother (my great-grandmother) upon her confirmation. Looking up Avodat Israel siddurim and finding origin points from the 1880's to the 1960's. So gorgeous!
Does anyone have a recommendation for a Siddur? I would love one that has Hebrew and English and is transliterated.
Thank you in advance!
A siddur from 1937, in accordance with the German & Polish tradition. Sold via Instagram.
