Whereas in Snuff Vimes actually gets arrested! It's a bit Discworld by numbers, like, it follows all the beats in a slightly mechanical way, but it's imo not worse than mediocre

The thing is that Thud is like...memetic Vimes. Vimes who is So Watchman he can defeat this ancient horror just because he is special, unlike the many people throughout history who lacked the willpower or just weren't special enough. Bleh!!

So I want to start by saying I absolutely sympathize with the Thud irritation. When I was 14 I lied constantly about Night Watch NOT being my favorite watch book because I thought to admit it would, somehow, encourage him (in the use of capital letters in his internal monologue). However. I also want to remind you---and I appreciate that it has been several years and Snuff is at the top of no one’s reread list---I want to remind you that Snuff is the one where racism is solved by one member of a despised species playing beautiful music for the U.N.

I've seen the take that people only hate on Eol because he's black coded and/or indigenous coded. Which seems to turn into You Only Hate Eol Because Racism which seems to me an unnecessarily simplistic view on the entire situation

ddjkfjfghfjhdgdjf i thought we as a site had come to the conclusion that ‘it’s not kidnapping rape and attempted child murder if a marginalized identity does it’ was actually a super patronizing and racist take itself but uhhhhhhh. 

anyway i would agree that TOLKIEN was super annoying and racist in MAKING eol like that but i’m p sure the correct response to that is Cool AU Fanfic portraying the Silm account of the situation as a falsified racist myth or smth

i always hate this thing not only for the obvious reasons but also bc like......on AREDHEL’S side of things, i wouldn’t actually.....dispute a portrayal of her POV as like ‘this Horrible Man who tried to kidnap me is so fascinating and hot i’m gonna camp out here for 50 years having sex w him’ bc like, especially in the context of her being like still BFFs with celegorm and curufin even after they abandoned her and her family to freeze to death on the ice, i feel like that wouldn’t actually be OOC of her. but i don’t see how that makes EOL any better? headcanoning that ‘oh actually she wasn’t that upset’ as an actually legit description of her POV instead of a sexist wishy-washy ‘does it Really count as rape tho’ isn’t necessarily invalid, but it doesn’t retroactively make it NOT attempted kidnap and murder on Eol’s side of things soooo

It’s just the one I’ve already mentioned being interested in lately, Mo Dao Zu Shi aka Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation.  It’s a bit difficult to find, I’m guessing the China -> US distribution system is less developed the Japan -> US distribution.  Also it’s apparently openly classed as a m/m romance (I’ve seen it called boyslove, idk if China actually uses the same fan-slang for the genre as Japan but it’s that vibe of m/m romance rather than yaoi which is technically only the more porn-y stuff) which always makes content more difficult to get for assorted reasons.  

I’m super amused because it’s a very “fanfic” narrative so far.  Rather than following mainstream romance tropes it sets up with some solid worldbuilding and an interesting and complex backstory for the characters and their relationship, one character gets a body swap so the other doesn’t recognize him, the plot shoves the main couple together on a (mildly comedic) roadtrip, and then it lets things develop from there.  So it has a lot of the feel of someone’s post-canon fic for a couple of characters from a fairly straightforward fighting/fantasy [video game/manga/tv show/etc.] where one half of the writer’s OTP died.  That’s not a spoiler, you find out the character died in the intro narrative of the first episode when they explain the backstory, he gets resurrected in the first five minutes.  See what I mean about a fanfic-y premise?
