The Oats Goat of European folklore: . In the folklore of Eastern Europe, this is the name of the spirit of the growing oats and also the name given to the figure made from the last sheaf cut from the field of growing grain. In Prussia especially, the Oats Goat is a prominent field spirit, of whom children are warned, and reapers hurry with the work to keep ahead of the Oats Goat who pushes laggards from behind. In some parts of Germany, there are two such goats, a he-goat and she-goat. In the Grenoble region of France, a live goat is decked with flowers and ribbons and turned loose in the field: when the reaping is over it is caught and killed, and roasted for the harvest supper. It's skin is then made into a cloak, which is usually worn by the farmer during the threshing of the oats, but it can be transferred to any reaper who gets a backache. In Bohemia, a mummer dressed in straw and wearing goat horns is called the Oats Goat and is led from house to house during Shrovetide celebrations. He dances in front of houses, or enters and dances with the women of the household and is given food and money. . Art: @stitching_a_laugh_to_darkness thank you!
