Adding height to the back of this cottage garden border was Laburnum anagyroides (common laburnum, golden rain). This small tree was introduced into the UK in 1560 and is often planted in parks and gardens. It should be used with care as the plant is poisonous including the seeds.

Captain Collingwood Ingram (1880–1981), the champion of ornamental cherry trees in Britain, bred Prunus × incam 'Okamé' (ornamental cherry) from Prunus campanulata and Prunus incisa. This small deciduous tree has fragrant carmine pink flowers produced in early spring. In autumn the leaves turn vibrant shades of orange and red.
