#2654 - Aciphylla montana - Mountain Speargrass

Not a grass. It's actually in the Carrot family. There are two subspecies (unless they can folded back into one) but I'm not sure if this in A. m. montana or A. m. gracilis.

Endemic to the South Island, where it grows in subalpine and subarctic grasslands, rocky outcrops, and at the base of stabilised scree slopes.

As the clouds descended lower and lower boxing in the surrounding ridgelines near Speargrass Hut, Teddy prepared for what would end up being multiple days of bone soaking rain.

'Burn grass time' gives us good hunting. It brings animals such as wallabies, kangaroos and turkeys on the fresh new feed of green grasses and plants. But it does not only provide for us but also for animals, birds, reptiles and insects. After the 'burn' you will see hundreds of white cockatoos digging for grass roots . . . If it wasn't burnt they would not be about to penetrate the dense and long speargrass and other grasses for these sources of food.³³
