Supernatural spoiler warning

My mum is currently rewatching supernatural for what is probably the millionth time and decided just for the fun of it to count Sam and Deans deaths. She often has it on in the kitchen so I have been helping her count them and watching it with her but this has caused some debate on what counts as a death so we have come up with 4 categories we would like to put before the council

Nearly, Nearly Dead - Pamala uses an incantation allowing them to temporarily become ghosts (S4 E15 "Death takes a holiday")

Nearly Dead - Dean doesn't get reaped after the car crash because John sells his soul and the Colt to yellow eyes to save him (S2 E1 "In my time of dying")

Nearly, Dead Dead - Billy temporary kills them to get them out of the black sight with the deal that a Winchester will die at midnight (S12 E9 "First blood")

Dead Dead - Dean is killed by hell hounds (S3 E16 "No rest for the wicked")

Which is the worse parenting move?

Deathbed order to son - kill your brother if he can't save him from going evil

Your son about to end the world - shoot him in front of his siblings

I've never done a poll before, but this has been rattling around in my brain since I watched a TUA 4x4 last weekend. Not which one of them is the worse parent (too much evidence on both sides). No - which of these one-off parenting choices is the shittiest.

On the one hand you have John Winchester, a man who "raised" two very co-dependent sons after the tragic loss of his wife. He teaches them young to be fighters and goes on a quest to avenge his wife. He does this both to help him on his quest and to protect themselves and each other. He's suspicious his younger son Sam might be something the demon who killed his wife is interested in, and may likely cause his son to turn evil in a big way. He values his sons following orders above all else and his biggest order to his oldest son Dean is protect Sammy. To the point where in many ways Dean raised Sam more than John ever did. So when Dean is near death after a fight with the demon, John decides to take himself out of the fight to save Dean. And in doing that, in addition to giving Dean a(nother) complex he decides his last order is for Dean to save Sammy, and if he can't, it's his responsibility to kill him. (This leads to Dean being determined to save Sam and starting the apocalypse.)

On the other hand you have Reginald Hargreeves. A man who lost his wife and is determined to get her back, and part of that involves adopting a bunch of kids he barely tolerates. He teaches them to fight young, follow orders, and help save the world. He sends them on a mission to blow up a weapon and his kind-hearted son Ben disobeys orders to save a girl instead of blowing her up. By touching her, Ben's about to start the apocalypse, a fact Reginald never told him. Reginald upon seeing what Ben did, without any explanation, shoots Ben and the girl in the head. He does this in front of most of his children. He then brainwashes the remaining kids to forget what he did and think it was all their fault, particularly for not following orders. (This is the last straw in the break-up of the family and Reginald only "saves" the world by about 12 1/2 years because there's another apocalypse his parenting was directly involved in.)

So which is worse - Killing your son point-blank in front of his siblings to save the world and then "dealing" with the consequences of that choice OR fucking off to the afterlife and leaving the responsibility to your son to figure out how to save or kill his potentially world-ending brother?
