you know what I absolutely cannot stop thinking about? all the *cas* moments which happened, but we missed this episode.
dean starts to pray, okay, and cas is so surprised, because it's been ages since someone prayed to him, and it's the intense feeling of someone believing in you, someone needing you, someone dedicating their words only and only to you - and that someone's dean; cas almost swoons. the leviathan holding him up scowls.
dean's voice quivers. "i shouldn't have let you go." cas sighs - as he's reminded of the irony in the fact that he's once again being taken away from dean. of course, this time, dean had been knocked unconscious and rendered incapable of stopping him - but hadn't he metaphorically had his hands tied then too? cas sighs, once more, and keeps listening.
its when dean is talking about the anger. his rage - this thing bottled up within, which comes forth when everything goes wrong - and he sounds so vulnerable, and so helpless, and cas is hanging onto every word so dearly that he's quite stunned at himself, in a good way, in a really great way, when he manages to spot the red blossom.
dean says "i forgive you" when cas has just launched on the closest leviathan, taking him out at once. he pauses when dean says it, blinks, but doesn't hesitate to now smite on the one who's charging at him
cas pants, trying to fend off two monsters at the same time. "of course i forgive you." cas kills one, and shoves the other away with all his strength, earning a moment to absorb what dean just said to him.
"i'm so sorry, cas." dean's voice breaks. he's crying. cas starts to run. he has to get away, and he can't fight these all, and he has to get to dean.
he reaches the rift and freezes; dean is nowhere to be seen. he starts to panic. dean's words, his confession, his choked up voice - it makes so much more sense now. dean is in trouble. his life's in danger. that's why he prayed, that's why he said those things, that's why -
cas sinks, against a tree. he buries himself in the cove made by it's overground roots, head in his hands, running dean's words over and over in his head.
he can't stop feeling unjustifiedly angry about the fact that dean only said those things cause he thought this was the last chance he'd ever get to say them. not of his own volition. cause that has to be what happened, right?
"you made it." cas breathes out, getting up to his feet.
dean doesn't look hurt. but he does look devastated.
"i made it?" he says, with a unbelieving scoff, and maybe he says something else too, but all cas sees is him coming towards him. "cas." he chokes, and then dean finally, finally reaches him.
dean pulls him into a hug, but it feels more like he pushes himself up against cas. like, for a change, he isn't the one who's hugging, he's the one being hugged. dean's chin gets buried on cas's shoulder, and cas's hands come up around dean.
they haven't been this close to each other in so long. they both thought they'd lost the latter, so they pull each other near - safe. because that's what they are, in each other's arms. safe. saved.
the strange terrain makes cas taller, so it's easier to comfort dean too. when dean pulls back, he's still got his hand on cas's shoulder. like he doesn't want him to move away. like he's not letting him go
cas notices dean's eyes still shine with tears.
and you know what? dean isn't hurt, cas isn't hurt. maybe those words weren't a hurried, adrenaline-driven resort. or a last speech kinda thing. cas feels the thought cool his heart. maybe dean did really mean those things, after all.
