The Infamous Master Cleanse (Days 1-3)
Welp, thanks to my dear friend Sarah, I decided to start off the New Year indulging (or I guess it'd be the opposite of indulging, wouldn't it?) in the infamous Master Cleanse created by Stanley Burroughs in the 1940s.
Honestly, I was a little skeptical at first but nonetheless intrigued. I didn't really know what I was getting myself into. But almost immediately after starting it, I've had a burst of epiphanies and just other interesting observations I felt necessary to share. I started taking my notes down on my phone, but decided typing them on an actual, large keyboard is faster and more efficient... so without further ado, here goes! I will update after this each day :D And I want to include a lot of info that I don't see included in other blogs/reviews of this cleanse so hopefully it's useful. I kind of feel like I'm conducting a scientific experiment on myself.
So, I'll jot down my notes from the first few days before I get on with my current impressions of this cleanse:
Day 1 I started Saturday, January 4th. This truly sucked because I work at store in a local mall that is right above the food court. OH MY GOD. I kept smelling chick fil a and asian mall food and eye-fucking the shit out of which wich. This is going to be difficult, I can tell. But I did it! It also helps that I left my credit card at Blake's place and thus couldn't buy anything anyways even if I wanted. I should probably do that every time I go to the mall... just hide my credit cards hehe. I felt great though, and I really liked the taste of the lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and maple syrup. I actually have been juicing my lemons (rinds included) to maximize nutrition instead of squeezing them into the drink. I decided to also drink a Kombucha to settle my empty stomach since it was the first day. I liked my energy, too. I behave much like an infant does when I eat, usually... as in, I eat and then promptly fall asleep to digest. Anyways, I'm just wondering at this point how the hell I'm going to keep this up for 10 days. I'm also worried about my menstrual cycle as a woman because I am expecting it on the 7th and as everyone knows, periods get delayed when the body goes into starvation mode (i.e. why anorexics don't get periods often or they're always delayed). I'm not on birth control anymore so I really don't like this idea of my super regular cycle being delayed, because it means unwanted and unneeded stress over having to buy a pregnancy test, etc. I ended the light with a laxative tea.
Day 2 Alright, this is definitely an interesting day for documentation, in my opinion, because a number of things went on that I think are worth discussing. First of all, I think I got up to eliminate both types of waste about three or four times the night before from the diuretic nature of the master cleanse (MC) drink and the... well... laxative effect of the laxative tea. That was mildly annoying, but whatever, I'm clearly excreting lots of toxins. I decided to do the optional Salt Water Flush (SWF) just because if I'm gonna do something, I'm gonna go in and do it all the way. No half-assing. So I mix 1qt of water and 2 tbsp of salt together (there are various debates over the amount of water and salt one should ingest to correctly achieve a salt water flush. The idea is that the water must become saturated with salt so that it's specific gravity is equivalent to that of your blood. By achieving this, the salt water cannot diffuse into your blood or kidneys and thus it follows your GI tract, flushing everything out), and I tried as hard as I could to chug the entire quart... Fail. (I believe I failed though because I am 5'2", 100lbs normally, so I am basically a miniature human being) And i actually unwittingly drank precisely half a quart of the stuff before my gag reflex was like... yeah, no more of that. So chugging even half a quart of that shit was definitely an uphill battle. I had read that the effects would occur about an hour after ingestion, so I got in my car and drove up to my mom's house to do laundry as I waited for the flush to kick in. My mom only lives about 20ish minutes from Atlanta, and I'm certainly glad that's all, because by the time I pulled into the driveway I had to bolt right to the bathroom. To be honest, I thought I was dying and my body was going into shock. I was wondering if I had legitimately, unwittingly poisoned myself at this point. My entire body began to heat up, I started sweating, my head felt light. I barely had time to grab myself a glass of water and rip off my warm layers of clothes to keep myself from passing out before running to the bathroom and the onslaught i experienced commenced. What really freaked me out is that although I had predicted my period to be delayed due to the drop in solid food intake, it actually started -double take- EARLY? But at this particular point in time, I thought that I had an ulcer in my stomach extremely upset from the salt and I had started bleeding out. I thought I was going into shock and thought to myself, well I'm glad I'm at my mom's so she can take my stupid ass to the hospital and save me from this silly trendy cleanse I thought had been a good idea..
Anyways... I regain myself and start to feel better after unloading what can only be referred to as a shitstorm, and calm down enough to realize that I am, in fact, menstruating instead of bleeding out of my poor bum. This is a terribly disgusting detail to include, but I think it's important to point out scientifically because that means that even after a full day of not eating solid food and only eating this silly concoction of lemonade and pepper, my body was properly nourished to the point where it was like, fuck it, let's get this party in your uterus started early! To me, that also shows promise for my friend, Rob Rhinehart's, quickly up-and-coming product known as Soylent. I had always wondered if the body actually interprets liquid vs. solid nutrition differently, but it appears that it doesn't. It also suggests that the Master Cleanse is indeed a trustworthy mix for cleansing, because my main concern was my body starting to think it was in starvation mode due to the lack of solid food.
Anyways, I have a couple other awesome thoughts that crop up on this day. And for me to tell you these thoughts, I have to admit a little something. I did end up cheating the slightest bit. However, as any woman knows, you always deserve a little something on the day your period starts. So I had a handful of fresh raspberries, chocolate almonds (I NEEDED me some chocolate), and about 4 garlic-stuffed olives. There were several reasons why I did this. A) I needed chocolate in my life. Just for that first day of menstruation. Seriously. B) My mother is one of those mother's that force feeds her children. There was no escaping her. It was either nibble on a couple things that I knew were natural and I could easily pass out of my system by the next day, or face my mother trying to shove a bowl of delicious chili down my throat. I politely declined the chili and watched her scarf her own bowl down. Boy, oh boy this is getting difficult. The point I want to make about cheating is this, though. I ate the garlic-stuffed olives because I'd been at work the day before and I am not exaggerating when I tell you EVERYONE was sick that worked there. EVERYONE. I'm sure the keyboards on the cash registers were just oozing with germs, AND my throat was getting kind of sore. Garlic is a powerful natural antibiotic, and honestly I just wanted something antibacterial in my system immediately following my exposure because fuck getting sick while trying to do a cleanse. But the raspberries and chocolate almonds were indulgences. I wasn't even hungry because I'd been filling myself with lemonade after my Salt water fiasco, but I truly desired the taste of the raspberries and chocolate covered almonds. So here's where I explain that I'm GLAD I cheated on this day because it taught me a very deep, important lesson, in my opinion, and it goes like this:
(quoted from my phone notes) "I was satisfied by my drink, but I wanted that sensation of taste. Hmm. I am addicted to eating, to tasting things, to using my sense of flavor to experience the world around me. Although a normal and healthy thing to do, if I can go the rest of this cleanse without breaking, I will have (in my opinion) successfully mastered one of my most addictive senses. An addiction I've literally fed since birth. If I am able to do this, I am able to break myself of any other habit (I recently quit smoking cigarettes, so this is an important realization for me). This is a lesson in self-discipline. Do I have what it takes to start actually taking care of myself? Good habits and good health are not easy in this world. It takes conscious awareness and focus."
Additionally, I had a conversation with my mother after the pain of the SWF had subsided and I started feeling brighter and chirpier. I told her that this physical cleanse can be thought of as a metaphorical mental and emotional cleanse. There are so many negative thoughts and patterns I've created in my life that I yearn to let go of but haven't been able to figure out how. And I truly am starting to believe that this physical cleanse is a beautiful, open door to this opportunity. The body has it's own memory of past emotional pain and trauma, any massage therapist can tell you that. We also spend our entire lives eating terribly and building up toxic sludge ontop of toxic sludge that has no place in our body to begin with. What if physically cleansing myself of this pain and abuse I've inflicted on myself for the last 22 years is the answer I've been looking for on how to cleanse myself of the mental abuse I've also put myself through? In so many ancient religions and philosophical practices, there is a huge emphasis on the importance of fasting, and I'm starting to understand why through this cleanse. You must make a physical sacrifice, show that you REALLY want to achieve something, such as inner peace, in order to attain it. I must pull myself out of the hum-drum, mechanical flow of the world around me and silence the crying infant screaming for spiritual nourishment within my own psyche.
And that perfectly leads up to the next quote from my phone notes that I wrote at the end of Day 2: "I noticed myself get extremely crabby at my mother's and I have a feeling it's because I was hungry in a way I didn't really understand. I was full from the lemonade but still empty of solid food, empty of life's pleasureful flavors I'd grown attached to since birth. Another sign of addiction. I literally am going through a withdrawal for solid, tasty food. I need an external thing to make me completely happy. This cleanse will help me learn how to maifest my own happiness more deeply and internally. I do not need a luxurious, over indulging meal to feel complete in my life because I should be full from within."
Yeah, let's just say Day 2 was a game changer. I went home that night at about 1am and took a black candle and a yellow reike energy charged candle (positive energy, specifically) and sat them on a stand. I sat them next to each other and the nerdy physicist came out in me and I imagined the black candle was like an anode to a metaphorical battery, emitting my negative energy back into the universe where it could be recycled, and the yellow candle of positive energy was my cathode, and it was pulling in good energy and love into my heart. I told myself I was done abusing myself, it was time to stop hating the person I used to be and start focusing on the person I currently am, a person I love to be. And I sat, mesmerized by the flames. The black candle's flame burned away my past, my pain, my baggage. The yellow candle's flame became the energetic flame of love in my heart. My very pulse.
Day 3
So by the mid afternoon, I've pretty much passed out everything I had cheatedly ingested the day before when I was at my mother's. And after my beautiful epiphanies from Day 2, I am 100% committed to doing this for real and not allowing another slip up because I really do want to prove this to myself. I have a purpose, now. I am challenging my greatest competitor--myself. And i have a lot of self-loathing issues buried deep down inside that I've held on to for so long... So much failure and pain in my life that I've honestly enjoyed abusing myself for the past 22 years because I masochistically believe I deserve it. But no, this cleanse is a metaphor for the new me that I want to create... A new me that actually loves myself and embraces myself and will push myself to be the best I can be. I have shirked myself the great gift of taking conscious care of myself, and I sincerely believe it's become a spiritual roadblock in my life that I must overcome and I must overcome it NOW. There is no other time but NOW, the present moment. If not now, when?
Day 3 was the first day of classes back in session. A day I always dread... But this day was different. I was brimming with positive energy. I awoke at 7:40am-- enough time to shower, make my MC drink for the day, put on a cute outfit, and even pick Blake up for our first class at 9am. I am NOT a morning person. I actually have had a huge issue with being able to wake up and get out of bed in the morning because I get paralyzed by my depression and anxiety. When I was a second year at Tech, I literally would sleep all day through my classes to avoid the pain of not understanding the lectures and then stay up every night trying to teach myself what I'd missed (completely retarded, I know). I have slept through COUNTLESS important meetings, classes, work shifts, and appointments because I'd finally get into a deep sleep and then never awaken to my phone's alarm going off. And although I am a lot more efficient and responsible than that now, it is still extremely painful to me to get up in the mornings, and I normally sleep until the last second possible before jumping up, scrambling to put on clothes, and running out the door without a shower or breakfast. So the fact that I woke up so easily (granted I set my alarm for 7am but 7:40 was still the *just right* amount of time I needed to actually take care of myself in the morning), really is a big deal to me. I know that these little things in life seem so trivial and easy, but to someone who's been anxious and depressed their entire life, this is monumental. I decided to drink a kombucha to help replace the good bacteria that had been sloughed out of my body from the salt cleanse the day before, so all i had was a kombucha and the lemonade for the day, and I achieved another thing that I hadn't done in a verrrry long time... I completed every single thing on my to-do list I had made for myself! I actually had the energy to: go to all my classes, fill out my calendar with all my important school-related dates like tests and quizzes, buy my books, go to whole foods for more lemons, put away my clothes from my laundry sesh the day before, run a mile with Blake (i haven't worked out since.... September?), sit in the sauna to sweat out toxins, clean my bathroom (it was diiiiiisgusting. I can't remember the last time I'd cleaned it, before), AND read a chapter out of a book I've been trying to finish reading for the past two damn years (it's a great book! it's called On Being Certain and it's written by a neurologist who is absolutely brilliant). I drank my laxative tea and then went to sleep cuddled up with Blake in a nice, clean room (my room had been a MESS since Blake and I had started dating... OVER A FREAKING YEAR AGO).
So, wow. I know how these things go, though. I've definitely had manic spurts of productivity before and been like "yeah, I'm gettin my life together! wooooo" only to be back exactly where I started like a week later... but this just feels different. I can feel my old habits beginning to give, to bend, to splinter into a thousand little pieces of nonexistence. I can feel my soul beginning to stir and awaken and realize that I have made the conscious decision to not allow my ego to pilot me from day to day anymore. I am ready to be a fully conscious human being. I am tired to creating my own suffering and misery by living out my egotistical fantasies. My dream is to do something in the medical field. Something that can unite the mind, body, and spirit. And one of my favorite Alex Grey paintings is "Journey of the Wounded Healer" (click here and read the accompanying text below it as well to fully understand!) So in this sense, I believe my life goal is to be a healer. My deepest desire in this world is to help others alleviate their maladies and pain and suffering so that we all may be free of those things so we can go on to do greater and better things with our life, because our society is so broken right now it's kind of painful to even fully realize. But if there's one thing I can achieve in this strange, quirky life I've chosen to have... If there's one thing I can do so that when I am on my deathbed I will have felt complete and as if my life wasn't just some insignificant waste.... it'd be to alleviate the suffering of as many people as I possibly can. To be a source of truth and comfort and light in a very dark, confused, painful world. And this painting made me realize that the healer must heal themselves first before they can ever hope to heal others. For too long, I have been the victim of my own suffering, too weak to stand up to my own ego and say, "enough is enough. Give me my life back." And I really feel like this whole experience is the beginning of my intensive healing process. This cleanse is helping me prove to myself that no matter what's happened, I can keep going and I can create the reality around me. I can create myself into something beautiful and worth loving. And then maybe, just maybe, I'll be able to share that ability with everybody who's willing to listen, one day in the future.
Since day 4 isn't over yet, I will save that for another post later tonight. But I needed to get all of that out in the open. Writing has always been my therapy, my catharsis. I'm glad to be back.

Master Cleanse 2.0 - Day 4
Day 4 is in the books & the easiest yet! Once again I am amazed by this whole process of cleansing. Just going on with my regular day, making juice, (not for Me) working out, (much Harder than the last time I did this) and fight of the temptation of what seem to be food coming at me from all angle in every form. Funny thing is I'm Not the least bit hungry, but Everything looks So Good! At day 4 I have no clue how I'm going to make it 21, but hopefully I can remain focus & the support of My group will hold me up through this. I'll keep You posted though!
Master Cleanse 2.0 - Day 3
Day 3 is in the books and to me that's over the hump. If you can go 3 day without food You can probably go 40. The seed of doubt crept into my mind and I said to Myself "I Don't think I'm gonna be able to do 21 days!" But the truth of the matter is, I'm gonna do as many day as I can after ten. This is only My second cleanse and the goal is to do the best YOU can do whether it's 3 days of 40!! Day 3 was a Good day! Got My 5:30 am elliptical cardio in, My 3:30 Bally Total Fitness Incline Treadmill & Weight Training in, and I also hit the park for 3 miles. I slacked on My 100 x 100 challenge and only did a 100 push up, but that's all they require from me anyway. My workouts are up to par this week. What I just notice today though is that without the the various protein shake I would drink in a day, I don't think My muscles are recovering as fast. I got in 6 lemonade and over a gallon of water which was awesome, but I think I probably need to just get more lemonade in for increased calories. I was thinking I'd scale My Master Cleanse back from 21 to 14 days and finish the month with juice fasting, but I'll let you know when I get there! Anyone that has ever done this before know that You're Not hungry, but You miss the sensation of chewing and tasting different flavors! I'll keep You posted.
Master Cleanse 2.0 - Day 2
Here I sit again with My Chamomile Smooth Moves at the end of Day 2! Next time I do this I'm going to have to be wise like my sister and clean out the kitchen. I try Not to go in there, but that is highly impossible. When I do go in there the mini cupcake and raspberry filled powered donuts hit Me right in the face. I have Lay's which are my absolute favorite. "No one can eat just one!" and I can eat just one! Goldfish, fruit snacks, paydays, reeses cups, hershey bars, willy wonka's finest confections, grapes, strawberries, cantaloupe, watermelon, apples, oranges, plums, peaches, mangos, bananas, yogurt, granola, and All type of thing that I Love and Can't eat!! Truly a Test of Will & Mental fortitude! This is where a lot of folks tap out, but I won't! I'm Focused Man, I Will Beat this!! Outside of wanting to eat Everything, today was a Good day!! Monday as usual. 5:30 cardio, work, workout, bust a few moves, workout again. I haven't loss a step, My energy is on full blast. I drank 5 lemonades and over a gallon of water for the 1st time. Now is Hump day, because if You can get through 3 You made it and You can get through ten! (& if You can do 10, You can do 40) So day 3, Let's Do It, Bring It On!!
Master Cleanse 2.0 - Day 1
So I'm back at it again, but this time I brought My family & friends with Me! As I came to the end of day 1 with My Chamomile Smooth Moves sitting here I must say it's a Success! I started late due the 2 quarts of kale juice whipped up. So after an all nighter of kale juice and Ghostface Killah I started My master cleanse @ 6 am on 7-7-13, exactly 6 months to the day of my last cleanse. I have to say the first day is the hardest. Even though I started at 6 am it had to be the longest day ever. I'm going to have to try harder on staying out of my kitchen because unlike some, I didn't empty my refrigerator and cabinet of all it's snack time goodness. So it like navigating through a mine field of premium snack food that keep saying "just one won't hurt!" I want to Thank ALL My Family and Friends on this journey with Me this time. Our Facebook group is up and running, open to all, and the information and support is flowing. That's Awesome! Hopefully this is the first of many health and fitness bases events I will be host throughout the year as my health and fitness consciousness is growing on a daily basis. I receive great joy in sharing my experiences with you all. Congratulation to all of you that made it through day one without tapping out! Only 9 day to go until the best food You've tasted in a long time! Stay Focus and Strong, YOU can do this!!
