Pride || Oneshot

Title: Pride Rating: K Pairing: Rhodes Tyler/Tenth Doctor Summary: The Doctor takes Rhodes to his first Pride parade.

“So where are we going?” Rhodes asked curiously. The Doctor had told him to where good shoes for walking (which probably meant they were going to end up running), and had even handed him a tank top with a rainbow across the chest for him to wear. Which was weird – the Doctor didn't usually provide him clothes for the trip – but Rhodes had learned not to question the wild-haired Time Lord.

“It's a surprise!” The Doctor said happily, hitting a lever on the console, and the TARDIS jerked. Rhodes stumbled, catching himself on the railing.

“The real surprise will be if you land us without causing injuries.”

“Oi!”

There was a thud as they landed, and Rhodes look to the door, then back at the grinning Doctor. “Well?”

“You first.”

He was acting weird. But that was nothing new, Rhodes supposed as he started for the door. The first thing he noticed was that they had landed in an alley. “Always taking me to the best–”

He froze when he saw the explosion of rainbow clothing and accessories at the end of the alley. The Doctor practically swaggered out behind Rhodes, beaming.

“What...?”

“London,” the Doctor proclaimed as he dug through the pocket of his trenchcoat and produced a pink and white and blue folded-up cloth. “The twenty-fiteen Pride parade. One of the biggest in the world for that year. The others were in Houston, Los Angeles, and Denver in America, but I thought you'd enjoy the London parade best.”

Rhodes gaped at the flag the Doctor offered him, then looked back the parade, which seemed to be just beginning. “Mum never let me go,” he murmured in awe. Jackie Tyler, for all she was supportive, had been terrified of letting Rhodes come to something like this – afraid he would get hurt, or be rejected by the community. She wanted to protect him, and Rhodes understood that.

But he had dreamed of coming to this parade for years. How had the Doctor known?

“Well, I won't tell if you don't,” the Doctor teased, and Rhodes looked back at him. A slow smile, which quickly morphed into a grin, pulled at his lips. “Ready to jump in?”

“Yes!” Rhodes grabbed the flag – the trans flag, he realized as he also grabbed the Doctor's hand as well, dragging him into the throng.

It was exhilerating. Rhodes fell easily into the parade, the Doctor at his side, the flag trailing behind him like a cape. All around them people hooted and hollered, wearing flags like capes or waving them around, holding up signs proclaiming all kinds of LGBT positivity...

It was the most included Rhodes had ever felt in anything.

They didn't end up running, which was pleasantly surprising, but they did a lot of walking, and Rhodes was grateful that he had worn good shoes. It was also warm, and he was very grateful for the tanktop the Doctor had given him to wear.

“That was brilliant!” Rhodes proclaimed at the end of the parade. He had tried to say it several times while they'd been marching, but talking had been hard with people chanting around them. He all but threw himself at the Doctor (who had somehow acquired a small rainbow flag during the march and had waved it the entire time), hugging him tight. “Thank you,” he murmured, resting his chin on the Doctor's shoulder, the flag hanging from his hand.

“I'm glad you had fun.” The Doctor chuckled, holding Rhodes tight. “And if I'm not mistaken, we're right near that chippy you like...”

“You gonna pay this time, cheapskape?” Rhodes asked, smirking as he pulled back.

“We'll see when we get there.”

Rhodes rolled his eyes, tossing the flag around his shoulders and tying it around his neck before taking the Doctor's hand once more. “Fine. Let's go.”

I feel this so SO hard. especially your first two points (I'm kinda ambivalent about jodie whittaker as an actress). this articulates a lot of what I've been struggling to explain myself, so thanks for writing this up.

thank you! i am really glad that others out there are upset too. a big part of the reason i got up the courage to post what i did is so that others would know they aren’t alone, or shitty people.

honestly, thank you to everyone who’s replied to me privately and publicly with respect, even if you haven’t agreed. the response to this has been much better than i anticipated. <3
