Why microaggressions are harmful
What is a micro-aggression? A microaggression is a small indirect remark discriminatory towards a overlooked person and/or group.
Examples:
Your English is very good.
You’re pretty for a Black girl.
Don’t Asians only eat rice.
Wow you look nice it barely looks like you gained any weight.
*If a white women or man clutches their bag as a Black or Latino person walks passed or towards them*
All lives matter.
I’m not racist I have a Black friend.
No, I meant where are you from?
You’re in America Speak English!
There are a lot more examples, that I can explore if needed. These may seem like they are harmless and they are no big deal, but most of these can be based on negative stereotypes and can normalize racism. Why would it be wrong if I spoke a different language in America? It is the “cultural melting pot” right? And why wouldn't my English be just fine? You see most microaggressions are based on stereotypes and assumptions. Most of the time these do come off as insults. Think twice about what you say so that you don’t hurt anyone around you.
So be careful what you say because it just might effect someones welling being or confidence. In following posts I will explain different microaggression examples, and explain why they are wrong.
