I honestly think the Duffer brothers are planning SOMETHING. There's a chance that it will be the 9th episode, it just wasn't on the 7th of January. All the dots connecting to 7 could mean ANYTHING. We all just gave up when it wasn't released on the 7th of January.

I heard about the fact that the official stranger things Instagram posted "Chapter nine: the curse" to their story and they deleted it after. I think that they posted that on the 7th (I could be wrong tho) , and in that one video released on the 6th Jamie Campbell Bower says "it all starts tomorrow." Starts. If it would release on the 7th, it would end on the 7th, not start. And I don't think the Duffer brothers would make all these details that MAKE SENSE and do nothing with it. They're planning something. It started on the 7th. Whatever that means, it started.

And even if there was nothing, I wouldn't mind, because personally I'd be happy with this being the ending.

This is my opinion, it doesn't have to be true, but I believe in it. ANYWAYS RANT OVER BECAUSE IF I TALK ABOUT MY HYPERFIXATION MORE THIS WILL END UP BEING A FRICKING ESSAY OKAY BYE.

Do I think conformity gate is actually real? No.

Am I still going to read everyone’s fan theories because I love seeing this fandom so dedicated to the media? Yes.

The worst part about ‘conformitygate’ is that I do actually believe Netflix would pull one final cheap trick to keep riding the stranger things profit train. It was really the show that blew up the concept of streaming originals. Their entire business model now relies on trying to recreate it over and over, and I wouldn’t put a “ha now you regret cancelling after the show ended don’t you” cash grab past them. It’s a business model that thrives on peer pressure, exclusivity, and virality. A surprise episode or even season announcement is something I wouldn’t put past them.

That said, I do think it’s more likely just poor/stunted writing. The writers have a remarkable knack for characters, but the actual plot lacks structural integrity season to season. It’s a show that struggles under the weight of its own surprise popularity, and the constant need to one-up the past season to meet the infinite growth model of profit has been a major stumbling block in my opinion, as has the need to appeal to a mainstream audience. Productions at this scale under this model fundamentally and consistently fail to provide meaningful alternatives to the status quo: the good cop returns to the fold, the secret evil military group simply vanishes, the gay boy’s happy ending is self acceptance, the hetero endgame couples live happily ever after, the temporarily disabled character is fully cured with no lasting consequences, the canon queer couple is in offscreen limbo. Meaningful criticisms of oppressive systems are replaced with contentment and optimism that opts to move on from the problem rather than address it. It feels unsatisfying because it placates rather than satiates, and the exceedingly long epilogue that tries to tie everything up with a bow and make everyone happy just highlights that.

I was more of a casual fan and didn't even really ship Byler (no hate to any shippers, my main focus for this show was on scary monsters, my sincerest sympathies to the Byler nation), but even I know that ending was dumb and Will deserved better. Even if Mike and Will don't get together, or Mike doesn't reciprocate Will's feelings, I feel like there should have been a bigger and more emotional one on one moment than what they had on the tower. That best friends line? Bleh. Plain. Clunky. If I had just found out my best friend was in love with me and I couldn't return the feelings at the moment, I (personally) would feel like shit. I would feel guilty that I can't be what they want me to be, that I can't give them the kind of love they want. There would be something more than awkward laughs.

And the finale felt...anticlimactic? Too easy? Vecna gets impaled like Dean Winchester and Joyce just chops off his head? The ConformityGate theory actually adds weight to the story. It adds a sense of unsettling urgency. It makes sense. And it sucks because I know there isn't going to be a secret episode that proves it. I know there's no last minute twist that clicks all the pieces into place.

Stranger Things was fun. It was cool. I enjoyed it overall. But the very end was...lacking, and left me with more questions than answers. Apparently there are plans for a spin-off prequel, so who knows what that will have in store for us?

Farewell, Hawkins. It's been...strange.
