Cool Facts- The Siberian taimen is the largest trout species in modern history. The largest taimen ever caught was a whopping 2.1 meters and 105 kilograms. They are extremely fast fish, targeting smaller fish and even rodents or birds that come too close to the shoreline. Siberian taimen can live into their 50’s but it can take a decade before they’re sexually mature. This slow growth results in their population being at threat from intensive fishing efforts. Luckily, much of their population is protected and instead catch-and-release practices are emphasized. Efforts to limit illegal poaching and river pollution are being attempted throughout Mongolia and China.

モンゴル釣り遠征 Vol.5 最後のBIGFISH、誰も信じないホラ話

さーせん！さーせん！とだけ言わせてください。モンゴルから帰ってきてからというものかなりバタバタしていて、諸々の言い訳を並べていたら9月にまたモンゴルへ行ってきてしまいました...。その時の模様は近々別媒体で公開されるのですが、もう忘れちゃいそう、いや、忘れる事は出来ないあの出来事を記事にしてからタイメン編を終わりにしよう！来週からはまた遠征を控えているし...という事で、最終回の始まり始まり〜。

翌朝、どこか慣れた感じで3人ともいつも通りに起床し、いつも通りに崖を降りる。そして皆それぞれの「マイウォーター」を打ちながら川を登り降り。先に顛末をお話しすると、結局前日のメーターよりも大きな魚は出なかった。旅の最大魚はペスの釣った125cmのタイメン。しかし、ただの「結果」だけでは消化仕切れず、わずか３ヶ月後にまたこの地を踏んでしまう出会いと別れがそこにはあったんです...

この日も僕が張り付いたのは、前日に大きな魚を逃しているストレッチ。ジョイクロを遠投するれば対岸に届いてしまう程に川は細くなり、流れも強い。

居るのはわかってるんだ。

流石にここ２、3日必ずこちらも顔を出しているし、魚もスレてきたのだろうか？全くアタリがない。表層を攻めた後、今度は一気にクランクでボトムを突き回してみたけど無反応。しかしトラウトって魚、特に流れのある場所の魚はレンジ（水深）が数センチ変わるだけでいきなりスイッチが入ることが多い。これは中禅寺湖でもそうだし渓流でもそう。管理釣り場で、見えている魚がいきなり口を使う事だってありますよね？

腐らずに、板オモリを貼り足したりしながらレンジを刻んでいく。

いや〜釣れない。暑くて上着を脱ごうか迷う。

結構諦めムード（笑）ペスも少し戻りながらランガンを始めた。

いや〜、いるはずなんだよなぁ。

本当に得てしていつもこうなんだけど、もう諦めようって思っていた瞬間に、ココっと前あたりのような手応えがあった。そしてすぐにガチッと岩に挟まったようにルアーが止まった。しかしここはもう迷わない。このコース、この流れ、このレンジに岩は無い。フッキングをした瞬間に巨大な尾ビレが水面を叩いた。

「ぺーーーーース！！」

これしか言えない。

なんか毎回ごめんねと思うこの展開、ペスが少し離れた場所から走って戻ってくる。その間に魚がグングンと流れに乗り、前日の奴とは違い下流に走る。全く止められない。まあリールがクイックファイヤーだからしょうがない(苦笑) 親指でスプールを抑えて、PEが皮膚を研磨しているかのような痛み。だめだ全然止まらない！

そして下流側のペスの方が魚に近かったと思う。その瞬間、あまりに巨大なその魚は全身を出すことが出来ないと言わんばかりに、体の半分を水から出して大きな水しぶきを上げた。その瞬間2人の声が同時に上がった。

「デケーーーーーーーーーーー！！」

ショータ・ジェンキンス氏はその時のことをこう振り返る...

「人がね、ふざけて川から飛び出してきたのかと思いましたよ。小さい頃よくやりませんでした？釣れないからって、誰かが水に入ってフックを取ったルアーを掴んで魚の代わりに泳いだりのたうち回る遊び。まさにあれですよ。だって、頭の幅が本当に僕らよりも全然広いんですから！」

そして逆光に反射する巨大な頭を水に叩きつけてほんの数秒後、手元からフッと重みが消えた。膝から崩れ落ちるとはこの事だと思った。岩に擦られてラインが切られたのかと思ったら、スナップが折られていた。開くとではなく、ポキっと折れていた。今思うと「ラパラのOリングに直結してれば...」しかし時すでに、大幅に遅し...

「ジェンちゃん魂を置いてきてしまいましたな。また取り返しに来ないと。」

ペスとサブリ、色々ありがとう！

AnglingBASSにも書かせてもらいましたが、僕はこのペスが放った一言がずーっと頭から離れない。モンゴルを思い出す度に、この瞬間とこの言葉が蘇る。あまりに釣果がズバ抜けてしまうせいでペスはシンプルに「超釣る人」で終わりそうになってしまうけど、本当は我々のようにたくさんの釣れない日と悔しい瞬間を経て、いつも夢の１匹に辿り着いている。なんか、あの言葉にはそんな事を考えさせられた。

諦めの悪いジェンキンスは、さっきロストしたルアーのレンジまで泳ぐようにオモリを貼ったK-TENを投げ倒した。サブリも追いついて3人でダベリ反省会モードに突入しながら投げ倒した。さっきはここで食ったんだよなぁ。そんな事を思いながら投げていたらゴゴン！釣れてきたのは90cmぐらいの丸々と太ったタイメン。うん、なんていうかあれだ。ありがとう！

エピローグ

この日の昼頃から、川はみるみる増水し、上流からまるでロイヤルミルクティー（言いたいだけ）のような水がドバドバと流れてきた。この平坦な大地にドカンと拓けた崖、スポンジのような草原だ。どこかで降った大雨は瞬く間に僕らの釣り場を飲み込んでしまった。

翌日、まるで違う場所に来たかのような川を一応釣り歩いてみた。魚からの反応は全くない。そして昨日まではなかった反転流の中をルアーを通し、ドリフトさせていたらビクビクっと手応えがして、なんか結構引く！

ラストは今回の遠征最大のレノック様が顔を見せてくれた。しかし回復の見込みはなさそうである。結局かなり大きな「忘れ物」をしてしまったけれど、メンバー全員が素晴らしい魚に恵まれた。僕らは予定通りチョロート川を後にして、次の目的地に向けて一度ウランバートルへと車を走らせた。

ロストしたルアーは翌日増水で出来たゴミ溜まりの中で浮いているのを発見された。魚にとって非常に迷惑でロマンチックな解釈をさせてもらうと、これはこのモンゴルの大地が「またおいで」と言っていると信じて疑わないのだ。

この魚を思い出して記事を書く時、ティム・バートンの「BIGFISH」という映画を思い出した。映画のタイトルのビッグフィッシュにはホラ話って意味があって、直接的に釣りのストーリーではないけど、とても思い出に残る映画。 僕らの話はホラ話なんかじゃないけどね。

終わり
