As puffles we know who we are inside, but it isn’t always easy knowing who we are on the outside. The world doesn’t have much room for mold breakers and earth-shakers, that's why we have to make room for ourselves. Ganito na ba talaga kalala ngaun ? Nanliligaw pa lang gusto na agad maka score ? Kung ganito manliligaw nyo please lang wag nyo sagutin yang jakolero na yan haha. Pero seryoso ako nga lumuhod pa date at kung ano-ano na ginawa ko kahit mukha na kong tanga mapa “oo” ko lang ung nililigawan ko, nanghihiram pa ko ng cellphone matext lang siya,nag nanakaw ako ng bulaklak sa kapitbahay tpos ibibigay ko sa flag ceremony, pumupunta ako mismo sa bahay nila kahit sinasabihan ako na ano daw mapapala ng anak nila saken. Tapos makaka basa ako ng ganito ngaun ? Walanghiya nasan na ung chivalry ?

Badgers: Disease Vectors or Scapegoats?

Balancing our needs with those of the environment and other species is one of the most difficult and contentious current environmental issues, with greed and short-sightedness often winning out over long-term sustainability and tolerance. Many people seem to find it difficult to make space for others of our own species let alone anything else!

The latest issue to hit the headlines is that of the badger cull, which is now well underway in Gloucestershire. With conservationists on one side and agriculturists on the other, it’s easy to feel a bit caught in the middle.  Or entirely lost.

These are the facts:

Bovine Tuberculosis (bTB) is carried by badgers which may spread the disease to cattle.

Badgers are protected in the UK under the 1992 Protection of Badgers Act.

Culling is designed to control the badger population and the consequential spread of the disease to cattle.

A vaccine is currently being developed and trials have been undertaken by DEFRA.

One of the major routes of infection is from cattle to cattle, due to crowded conditions during transportation.

Badgers are sociable, living in family groups within a defined territory.  Culling can lead to displacement spreading the disease to unaffected individuals in neighbouring territories.

Recent research by Durham University concluded that the cull will not be effective in the control of Bovine TB and that the government should take a more comprehensive approach, taking farming practices into consideration.

The current culls in Gloucester and later Somerset are trials and if deemed effective in the control of Bovine TB a further 10 more in different counties may be undertaken.

Looking at those, it’s hard to find a compromise that works. I rather think that it is little hypocritical to legislate for the badgers’ protection one minute and then start a country-wide cull the next. If this trial is deemed successful, further culls may well seriously affect the badger population.

I'm not saying that the Wildllife reservoir does not need to be considered, I just believe that this is a multi-factorial problem which needs a multi-factorial approach; restriction and re-evaluation of argicultural practices and transport and investment in a COMPREHENSIVE vacination program.

I for one will be very interested in how successful the vacination program currently underway in Wales will prove ... Heres hoping.
