The most interesting ideas in Sonic Boom.
Although Sonic Boom is primarily a comedy series, I believe it had some interesting ideas and characters. I'll discuss some of these ideas in this post.
--------------------------------
5 - Sticks the Badger.
This one is obvious, and I don't think I need to say much about Sticks, but since she was introduced in Sonic Boom, she at least needs a mention here. Anyway, Sticks is cool, probably the best addition Sonic Boom made to the franchise, and I'm happy to see that many people liked her and didn't find her so annoying. I hope she reappears in the franchise someday because (as far as I know) Ian Flynn wanted to include her in the IDW comics, but it seems SEGA hasn't allowed it yet, which is sad. However, sooner or later, I believe Sticks will return, and I think it would be cool to delve deeper into her conspiracy theories and break the fourth wall more often than the other characters.
--------------------------------
4 - Morpho.
Although the idea of a shapeshifter was better utilized in IDW's Mimic, I believe Morpho was something quite unique for the franchise. Morpho being a robot from another universe whose universe was destroyed by his creator is quite interesting. I also loved the detail of him wearing blue and being blonde, just like Maria Robotnik; I think that was a cool reference in his design. It would be cool to have a new version of Morpho in the IDW comics, and I can imagine him still being a robot, but perhaps not created by Eggman. It could be a universe where Eggman was never born, but Gerald created a robot to accompany Maria, and that robot is Morpho? Something like that.
--------------------------------
3 - An Eggman who's not so evil.
Dr. Eggman has always been a villain who occasionally helps the heroes when necessary and still has a certain attachment to some characters (especially Sage). However, he is still mostly an antagonist and has caused several disasters that some people consider irredeemable. For example, remember when he released a Primordial God (Dark Gaia) just to create his Eggmanland? Or when he released a virus on many people and caused a Metallic Apocalypse? And I won't even mention what he did in the Archie comics.
Although I know Sonic Boom is a comedy and tries to be lighthearted, I still find it incredible that the Eggman in Sonic Boom is the "goodest" version of the character. Sure, there are alternate versions where he's a good person, but I'm talking about a version where he's still a villain, but has a benevolent side to him, and that Eggman is the one from Sonic Boom. Like, he attacks Team Sonic and the village daily, but even so, there are moments when he's friends with everyone. Eggman is Amy's Fuzzy Puppy Buddie, he helped Tails get the girl he was in love with, he saved Sonic several times. Not only that, but he also manages to have more common sense and reasoning than many of the villagers. There's also an episode where he transforms into a cute animal and everyone teases him for it, but Beth (The Shrew) showed compassion and tried to be nice to him. In fact, Eggman transformed into the animal just to save Beth from the trash compactor, even knowing that it would reset the countdown for the mutation to disappear.
Yes, Eggman from Sonic Boom is my favorite version of the character.
--------------------------------
2 - The Lightning Bolt Society.
Although the Lightning Bolt Society (LBS) is seen as a joke in the series, I found the idea of a cult/secret group of inventors who hate both Eggman and Sonic fascinating. I can imagine a version of the LBS in the IDW universe, but used by the brightest/most intelligent minds in the franchise (except Eggman and maybe Tails). Like, imagine if Starline comes back and creates a secret group of geniuses to take down Eggman and Sonic? I can imagine something like that. Of course, the cult doesn't need to be called the "Lightning Bolt Society," but I think using that idea would be cool to see in a more serious version.
--------------------------------
1 - DREAMCASTER!
Dreamcaster, perhaps Eggman's second greatest creation in Sonic Boom (behind Metal Sonic). Where do I even begin? Dreamcaster is a character I feel SHOULD already be in the IDW comics, because besides having an incredible design, he's a huge threat with his hypnotic powers and was the only character who managed to control most of Team Sonic in the series. Of course, he ended up losing to Sticks, but even so, I thought the idea of a robot/entity having hypnotic powers and controlling through dreams was incredible. However, Dreamcaster isn't the only one with this dream power, because there's also Ariem in "Sonic Dream Team". I believe an interaction between Dreamcaster and Ariem would be really cool to see, maybe having Ariem represent people's good dreams and Dreamcaster represent their nightmares? Something like that. Furthermore, I believe Dreamcaster could even rebel against his creators and become a threat himself; he has so much potential, and I would love to see him back in the franchise.
Maybe one day I'll make a post about how I would reimagine the Dreamcaster in the Sonic franchise.
--------------------------------
We've reached the end. I hope you enjoyed it and found it interesting. Do you also have something you found interesting in Sonic Boom that you'd like to share? Comment if you'd like. Until next time!
Team Eggman Vehicles
Eggman: Egg Drillster Mk.II
Metal Sonic: Buster M
Egg Pawn: Pawn Calibur
Sage: Giganto Liner
All/AI Racers: Moto Beetle
I think one of the things I have latched onto the most when it comes to Sage being part of team Eggman now is the (currently) untapped potential of the three on three battles you can have between them and Team Sonic now. And they all play off each other in different ways no matter how you want to arrange them.
Knuckles vs Metal Sonic really resonates with me because it's the exact same dynamic as Knuckles and Sonic, and yet it's also inverted in a way. It's Power vs Speed, but it has the same Nature vs Technology dynamic as Sonic against Metal. Something about the whole thing of the pinnacle of Eggmans technology trying and failing to scale the immovable mountain peak that is Knuckles really fucks.
And Knuckles vs Eggman or Sage both have the same brawn vs brain element. Knuckles being a blunt sledgehammer busting through or being tangled up in their tricks or strategies or being swamped by an overwhelming onslaught of robotic weaponry. Real John Henry and the steam drill type stuff.
Tails vs Sage resonates because they're the same type of character - the data driven analyst in a support role for their primary benefactor who also have deep rooted emotional issues lol. But while Tails relationship with Sonic is one built on mutual trust and Sonic wanting to uplift Tails, Sage's relationship with Eggman is entirely conditional and based on skinner box positive feedback in exchange for utilitarian function. They're equal but opposite foils, and any fight between them would be like the "sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" version of a fucking wizard battle where half the fight is just them playing 4D chess against each other in their own minds.
Tails and Eggman already have an established dynamic with how SA2 had them as comparable rival characters fighting each other in their associated Mechas. We already know how that fight works because we already seen it play out.
And Tails vs Metal Sonic has the whole "Sonic and Tails fighting" thing going for it in a sinister sort of way where Metal warps the dynamic of the unbreakable bond. You can easily imagine something where Metal outmaneuvers and outpaces Tails, but if Tails can manage to even lay a hand on him his mechanical knowledge can let him do unimaginable damage. Whereas Knuckles or Sonic have to beat Metal with brute force, Tails can be a scalpel that can be precise and irreparable.
And then of course we already know what Sonic fighting Metal Sonic or Eggman looks like. And I can imagine for Sonic fighting Sage, she'd perhaps see it as more like she's testing him and putting him through his paces and being impressed when he exceeds her expectations as always, while Sonic is equal parts entertained and incredulous about the fight.
I am FROTHING AT THE MOUTH for Crossworlds so we can see the interactions between every pairing of those six characters so I can get fuel for this three on three brawl scenario
Today i bring more sonic team buttons and one for all the radical highway fans out there. Also used silver and blaze's team name from crosswords cause dang its pretty awesome
((At last all the base game characters now have their rival interactions with Cosmo on CHZ! Thank you for being patient as I built up to this one over the course of a month and a half
I hope I conveyed that Cosmo and Sage's relationship is... complex. Cosmo dislikes Eggman as much as most of the rest of the Sonic cast. But she sees potential in Sage that could potentially end the constant cycle. Maybe it's still a case of her of being too naive for her own good. But even someone as normally blunt as Blaze can be heard saying Eggman's care for Sage gives her hope that something can change for the better. So you best believe that Cosmo will not give up on Sage just yet.
Sage meanwhile can be cold, even to Cosmo still. Insisting that all she does is for the protection of her father and the future of the Eggman Empire. ...But she also has expressed a desire for friendly relationships as seen as her crying tears witnessing Sonic and Tails' brotherly relationship in Frontiers. That could possibly be even more intense in the CHZ universe given here part of the reason she was created was to be an answer to Cosmo being the Heart of the Resistance. Either way though, more stories involving Sage will be required to get a feeling of how it'll all go. Probably especially whatever the follow-up game to Frontiers will be.
On another note, this may not be the end of the rival interactions as I might eventually start doing some with the DLC characters despite the fact they didn't actually get them in the game. Another thing I have been considering is having TAILS interactions with certain characters that might be changed from a CHZ universe perspective. But I'm not 100% sure I'll do that yet. But as is, now every character that did get interactions in Crossworlds is now covered in this series!))
