I mentioned some themes of hualian to my therapist today and she said it made her think of the quote “you must love in such a way that makes the other person feel free.” And like damn she really summarized what I love about hualian’s dynamic so much.

Hua Cheng, despite his reverence for Xie Lian, has no expectations or “inviolable monument” of Xie Lian, and vice versa. They’ve seen the worst of each other but that does not waver their love. It makes it stronger.

Some quotes that illustrate this:

“I understand your everything. Your courage, your despair; your kindness, your pain; your intelligence, your foolishness”

“What matters is you, not the state of you.”

I can’t find it but there’s this one quote that’s something along the lines of:

‘I never wanted you to be perfect. I just wanted you to be free to make your own choices.’

(That second sentence might even be from NPAB but still.)

“I have always been like this. You just didn’t know. I remember telling you a long time ago: don’t create an inviolable monument of me in your heart without my consent. I am not the person you imagined, and in the end, it is your own disappointment.”
