God I love my stepdad's toxicity whenever I do something wrong*.

Like today, I'm trying to help but he's just fucking shouting at me instead...

(*'wrong' being a super loose term that he likes to use a lot when I do something my way, not his, and he doesn't like it. If it goes 'wrong' (eg.: the box I was carrying earlier, slipped out of my had, it wasn't my fault) he shouts at me to do it a different way, his way, that's basically the same damn thing I was doing)

I spent this afternoon with my folks at their house. To be honest, there was a tiny little bit of me that was dreading it because the stepdad hasn’t always been exactly renowned for his progressive views. When the 6 o’clock news came on I took a strategic bathroom break to avoid any potential conflict, since despite the fact that I am very much a grown adult, any time I state an opinion on things like politics or current affairs, everyone, including the mama treats me like a teenager lashing out to be awkward.

So you can understand my surprise when he asked what the protests were about yesterday, triggered by my commenting about unfollowing an acquaintance on FB who had been scathing in their comments about the Women’s Marches.

Honestly, I was expecting him to tell me that everyone was overreacting, that the Cheeto should be given a chance, but he didn’t. He listened, put forth some opinions and observances of his own that I would never have expected and then we had a good talk about our own forthcoming election here in Northern Ireland, where our local government has fallen after less than a year.

Such an unexpected conversation, but one I’m very glad happened.

Balia’s Stepdad looked up from the boat engine he was working on.“Balia? Well it’s about time some guy snatched her up. Knowing her as long as I have I can say it’ll be the best decision that guy makes. But also not an easy one.” Kord ran his hand through his hair and then stroked his beard for a moment.“Relationships are never easy if you want them to last. You gotta work at them. And Balia has had a lot of hurt in her life. So any guy that wants to date her has gotta understand that and go gently with her. And try to make sure she doesn’t get into serious trouble? Some of the stories I’ve been hearing are a little worrying!”
