Remember That Time Dean Killed The Whore of Babylon?

This for CELEBRATING DEAN: a weekly Dean-centric event. Theme: Divinity

“Please, like you’re a servant of Heaven?! This is why my team is going to win. You’re the great vessel? You’re pathetic, self-hating, and faithless. It’s the end of the world and you’re just going to sit back and watch it happen.”

In 99 Problems (5x17) the Whore of Babylon (TWoB) has been giving the towns people (self-taught hunters) false visions. Her goal is to lead people to further sin against one another, damning them all to hell. Castiel explains that she can be killed by a branch of cypress tree that is wielded by a true Servant of Heaven. He further explains that he, Dean and Sam do not qualify. After a turn of events, Dean ends up in altercation with her. He is able to grab the cypress branch and stakes her. And it works. He kills what only a Servant of Heaven could kill! Let’s remember that The BW can read minds. Those weren’t just idle words she said to Dean, those were his thoughts, his feelings about himself being reflected back to him.

So why was Dean about to kill TWoB? We find out by the end of the episode that Dean has now decided to be Michael’s Vessel, with a few conditions. Is it THAT decision that made him a worthy Servant of Heaven?

Dean: The next few days, the crap you’re going to see on TV, it’s going to be downright trippy. Scary. But I don’t want you to worry because I’m making arrangements for you and Ben…The people that I’m going to see next, they’re not going to get anything from me without agreeing to a few of conditions..

We see Dean’s mindset in his farewell to Lisa at the end of the episode. We see this playout again in 13x05, when he makes a deal with Death/Billie to release the ghosts that were stuck. His Must Save People instinct immediately changed the struggle. Dean’s decision may have given him some Servant of Heaven street cred to kill TWoB, but he had not done the actual action, yet.

His decision is further explored in the next episode The Point of No Return. Zachariah reveals that the Angels used the ruse of using Adam in order to get Dean finally onboard. The Angels can be misguided assholes but they also know a couple things about Dean: He is motivated by saving others. And the only thing that motivates him more is saving his brother Sam. So they tried to be clever and use Adam: another life, another brother to hit both sweet spots.

Dean: Don’t be so sure, Whore.

The angels and supernatural beings like TWoB don’t understand human kindness, and this is their downfall. The moment “she” confirmed that Evil could win, and that Dean could be just watching it from the sidelines, the struggle against Dean was lost.  

Even though God is AWOL, there are laws of the universe that still exist. Dean’s true mojo was when his actual brand Faith was triggered – his noble (not pathetic), care for others (not self-hate), and his true faith that People Are Worth Saving and that Dean Winchester is the one to do it.
