Do you have any fun stories about children and their pets? Like questions that come out of left field. Or finding out their pets "new trick" is exactly what's causing the problem. Idk kids can be weird

Hmm. There is a story passed around vet circles of the cat which started urinating outside the litter tray, and was medically normal. Turns out, the young kid in the family had decided that peeing in the cat litter was easier or more fun that using the potty, and the cat took great offense at this and refused to use its ‘contaminated’ trays.

I’ve had to watch what I say around kids, because they seem to have a habit of taking things literally. Calling a frightened dog a ‘scaredy cat’ was met with debate, as was calling a cat ‘a big chicken’. It’s embarrassing being corrected by a five year old.

So I might actually get fired from my job because I keep leaving work on the service desk and my boss stresses that these are little things (that annoy her personally) but I am on my third development plan in three years for "fails to follow written and oral instruction" because she's told me not to leave things on the desk and that i just need to focus more and not get distracted and honestly i am so frustrated because she admits that I do every function of my job well except this one thing...

Talk to her about it. Maybe you can come up with a compromise. Like, you have a place you leave the things that you leave out, or you designate a drawer or a shelf for your work and you toss it there every time you leave the desk.

I love the Evolutions in Ice Plague and I’m curious if you think a Ash/Mosk hook up would work on any level? I loved the was Mosk was reacted to the glamour and him asking Ash to kill him.. Like Ash has that dark side that makes him a monster’s monster, so I wonder how the two would play together? (Even if it ends up being supes unhealthy)

I’ve been thinking about this since you asked!

I think like, if it was outside of the canon, it would probably work, actually? Like, I used to be really firm about not shipping Eran and Mosk with anyone other than each other (partly because I was still establishing their relationship and love at the time, but that’s pretty well established now and it feels a lot easier to think about).

I think if it happened in the canon, it would just become very awkward for Mosk, and there wasn’t much Ash could do about that, even if he would be consummately respectful, Ash wouldn’t let Mosk not feel anything, or hide in dissociation, and that would be distressing for Mosk, and probably distressing for Ash by association (he can tell a rape victim from a mile off, tbh, if he’s making out with them).

But in general, I actually think they could work. Like if it was an AU or something? I don’t think Ash would be that interested in being like, super predatory around him. It would probably end up really soft. Certainly softer than how Ash is in Quid Pro Quo. I think partly because Gwyn in Quid Pro Quo holds so much more power, on every level, so Ash is constantly proving his own power against him (which is a very Unseelie thing to do in general). They are semi-antagonistic even though Ash wants to take care of him, Gwyn doesn’t make it easy, so Ash has to push and the way he does with Gwyn is to match his machismo with his own (because Ash also knows instinctively that being ‘really soft’ with Gwyn will drive him away in ten seconds, you can actually see the points in this story he realises this).

But Mosk doesn’t push in the same way. He is so obviously a defensive, lonely, sad person when he pushes back. That’s why no one ever takes his pushing seriously (er, until lately, when he got super powerful). I think Ash would see it more as a red flag, that says ‘I am scared and hurt and prickly and self destructive’ and be very careful how he responded to that.

I really want to show more of Mosk and Ash together in book 3 in particular, but I’m not sure I’ll get to. Mosk loves Ash’s glamour, but he doesn’t actually love Ash. He loves how Ash made him felt. But I actually think they would get along? Mosk is actually a pretty good, engaged conversationalist when he wants to be. And he is pretty good at getting the truth out of people (consider that Mosk knows about: Mafydd and how he died and the manner in which that happened, some of Eran’s darkest secrets, and the Raven Prince’s torture). (Part of it is that Mosk doesn’t try very hard to get the truth about people, he presents himself as a kind of...neutral witness. Ash does the same thing.)

ANYWAY, look, I could ramble about this for a long time, but tl;dr I think for the most part, Ash would be as soft as he could with Mosk, and generally not take anything hurtful he said personally, and sort of understand where that was coming from. But based on different variables, things might change, and also like, I think Ash would feel pained about it too, because depending on when they met or hooked up, Mosk interprets so much love and comfort as pain himself.

Ahhhhhh so many thoughts. Tbh idk how it would play out ultimately, since I tend to alter things scenario by scenario anyway? And obviously whatever your imagining would work too, or whatever anyone imagines re: them.

It’s fun to think about though, partly because I’ve never really allowed myself before. Out of all of our main trio - Gwyn, Augus and Ash, I think Mosk is probably most compatible with Ash! Which...I’m not sure I would’ve said that a year ago. Which probably means my answer will change in like (a hot second) a few months!

There are a lot of foreshadowing things that I can typically catch when I reread things and I'm curious if the influence of Mosk's magic is going to be one of those things? Where you've put little hints to it that can be seen when looking back? Or is it more just a general something you keep in mind when writing? (I hope this question makes sense)

Mosk’s magic has absolutely been influencing everyone around him (especially Eran) for some time. And when Mosk’s magic is turned off, Mosk’s demeanour changes (he’s still not happy, but he experiences great depth and breadth of emotion, and it’s more changeable) and perhaps most notably, Eran’s behaviour and demeanour alters as well.

It was always intended to be fairly subtle, but it’s significant that when Mosk closes up his magic, Eran in particular can feel the difference, because it’s really distinct to him, which means it absolutely was impacting him before (and bringing him down). I’d say it’s going to be more noticeable going forwards, especially since Eran knows now, and understands what to look for!

I hope that’s what you meant. But yeah, Mosk’s magic will actually be influencing people less, because he’s being taught how to control it! Vs. Before, where it was like, influencing people all the time, and they didn’t know.

Do you have a suggestion for how to talk money with a vet? I recently had a vet visit that cost $300 which I didn't realize until after everything was done, and learned one of the procedures (inserting fluid under the skin) was just precautionary even though my cat was drinking fine (just slightly dehydrated). I appreciate the concern but just that was a $60 procedure which is really hard to swallow when youre just getting by. But at the same time I don't want them to think I don't care?

“Cost Constraints.”

That phrase is a common phrase we use to mean “The owner isn’t totally broke but you have to watch every dollar.”

Any vet should be happy to discuss costs of procedures and treatments before they’re done. There might be a little fumbling to look up the costs on the computer as they go (because of course we haven’t memorized the cost of everything and sometimes they change), but they should be willing to do this.

Part of good communication is letting clients know what things cost, and the pros or cons of any treatment options. It’s something we should all be willing to do.

There is usually a gold standard treatment, but there are often other versions of treatment plans too. Sometimes not everything is strictly necessary for the wellbeing of the pet, and this should ideally be discussed before administering anything.

So just come out and say it.

I need to know what this will cost.

I have a budget of X

Money is tight right now

Are there risks if we don’t do X

The more up front you can be, the better. From our point of view at least you’ve come into the clinic and have been up front, so we can be too. We’re not going to think you don’t care, most of us have been poor students at some point and can understand how life works.
