Tim looked through the huge skylight of the pool room, he saw Kip and Buzz swimming with the other party goers. He'd have to apologize to them later, probably make up an excuse about not feeling good. The party was still going strong, at this point he didn’t know when it’d end. Or when he’d see this mystery vigilante again. But the universe couldn’t have made better timing. There was a soft thud behind Tim, he heard the whip of a cape. And just a moment after that he was on the ground. A masked figure above him.
“What are you doing here?” The mystery vigilante had her forearm pressed against Tim’s throat. He could easily overpower her, something about that rubbed him the wrong way. He didn’t want to come off as an aggressor, he was here to get answers. Curiosity killed the cat, they say. The design of her mask was similar to his, but it couldn’t be Batman’s tech. This looked a little more homemade. She let off the pressure on his neck, just enough to let him speak. It hurt to swallow for a moment.
“I just came to ask questions, I swear..” She spoke like she knew him. At least who Robin was. Meaning she was familiar with Batman, definitely Batman. They always knew about the Bat. Tim could always use that as an advantage for criminals. If Robin was around that meant Batman was too. He wasn’t sure if she was a criminal just yet, but better safe than sorry.
“Is Batman here?” She spoke once more, this time without the edge. Called it. Everyone was always scared of Batman.
“No he’s not. Could you get off now?” Tim watched her expression change beneath her mask. She moved very carefully. Still cautious of Tim, she was in a ready stance to fight if needed. “You can relax. I just want to know who you are and what you’re doing.” That made her laugh.
“Isn’t that the first rule, you’re not supposed to know who I am?” Tim didn’t respond but he wasn’t going to relent either. So she broke the silence. “I’m doing exactly what you are. Helping people. That is what you do right?” Tim regretted convincing her to talk, he didn’t think she was the quiet type.
“Uh, yeah.” She’s annoying already. “Listen it’s not a good idea for you to be out here, I mean are you trained? How long have you been doing this for?” Why haven’t I heard about you? Is what Tim really wanted to ask.
“I’ve been trained. Plenty.” She let out haughtily. “And not long, but it doesn’t matter. This isn’t your turf. I hardly ever see the Bat here.”
“Turf? This isn’t West Side Story. I mean, not if you’re not breaking any laws, that is.” They were slowly circling on the roof of the pool room. The music from down below made the scene feel a bit more dramatic than it was.
“I’ve heard rumours of you over at Brentwood, at least on that side of the ‘Burbs. Why the sudden change, this place is way too boring for you.” She began balancing on the edge of the building. She played this move off to seem laid-back, Tim knew this was an easy escape route if things went south.
“That’s not any of your business. Besides, I'm the one asking questions. All you’ve been doing is deflecting. How long have you been doing this?”
“A month.” She replied curtly. “Not all of us have a Batman at our disposal, but I’m still qualified to be out here.”
“By whose standards?” Tim watched her masked eyes narrow. He couldn’t help but feel a little like a smart ass. It was kind of fun.
“That’s not any of your business.” She mocked. Tim let out a soft sigh, he’d have to just find out in his own personal time who she was. It wouldn’t be that hard. He wished she’d give him a little more.
“I’ll figure it out one way or another.” He had her voice recorded, and a good description of her build. It wouldn’t be difficult.
“I’d like to see you try.” Bad mistake, Tim felt himself beaming. Which was a stark contrast to what he had been feeling just a minute earlier. He had a feeling this new vigilante was gonna either cause a lot of trouble, or, well there isn’t another option.
They all cause trouble don’t they?
So, because of the new vigilante, he had a couple more bruises and his back ached like hell. He had spent the last 30 minutes tailing her after she ditched him from the rooftop of the pool house. When she realized he was tailing her she proved the whole “trained well enough stance” she had. She did lead him to her dorm room. Giving him another clue to her identity.
Tim slipped out his suit as carefully as he could, not only did Alfred complain about Tim being harsh on the fabric, but Tim’s back didn’t allow a lot of movement at the moment. She packed a whole lot of punch. Tim sat at his computer, not attempting to put any effort into getting in his civvies. He was focused on one thing and one thing only. Finding out who that girl was. It only took him one cross reference to find her name and age. Everything really.
She went to Bellwood, and was a senior like him. Not to mention, whether or not Tim would really admit it out loud, she was pretty. Tim caught himself smiling at her student records. A and B student, impressive extra-curriculars, she came from a wealthy background. The only suspicious detail was a gap year her sophomore year. She went to a different school, it was undisclosed. Tim would find it soon. But it was pretty late, and Alfred left a note on his desk reminding him of his civics test. Even Boy Wonder has to study.
Tim is sitting in the cafeteria staring at a poster on the wall. The corner is bent and it’s definitely about to fall. Kip sits in front of his line of sight and it wakes him out of his stupor.
“You totally ditched us last night.” Buzz sat down joining his friend in the interrogation. Tim sighed, something he feels like he does quite often nowadays.
“Yeah, I didn’t feel good.” There was a wide grin on their faces.
“You didn’t feel good? We heard quite the opposite.” Tim was confused by Buzz’s words. He set his fork down.
“What are you guys talking about?” Tim suddenly felt on edge. Of course someone saw him sneak away, but no one would have the brains to possibly connect him to Robin, if they saw him last night. His friends stifled their laughter. “C’mon spit it out.”
“Dude we know you split off with Janice Esteban. The whole school—“ Kip nudged Buzz. Tim felt his hearing go fuzzy, he could still hear both of them. But his mind was wandering. He didn’t even know who they were talking about.
“No, the whole school is not talking about it. Just us and a few others at the party. Buzz is being an ass.”
Tim was flabbergasted. Dumbfounded might be better. His brows were creased in that all too familiar mystery loving way. Tim Drake and Drama were close acquaintances, his luck with partners was…subpar at most. But to have a scandal (Not a scandal, he is dramatic), with him at the center. To have people, whether or not they were close friends of Kip and Buzz, talking about him. Well he was quite embarrassed, and severely confused.
“Tim?” Kip tilted his head, trying to gauge Tim’s mostly expressionless face. His eyebrows exposed him a lot.
“I have no clue who you’re talking about. Who told you guys this?” Tim leaned on his elbows, studying them. He knew their tells pretty well now.
“Janice did…she said you went back to Brentwood after you guys…made out.” Buzz replied very slowly. “Wait, are you saying she lied?”
Tim let out a laugh, “well I didn’t make out with anyone last night so, yeah!” Tim covered his face. “Why would anyone make up a lie like that?”
“Didn’t you lie to your girl Ariana all the time?” Kip chimed in.
“Ok but that was different, I didn’t lie about— making out with her…I just lied about going out at night.” Tim mumbled the last part. He regretted telling his friends about his old antics.
“Yeah, if that’s what you were lying about you wouldn’t have left the party so early. You’re such a shut-in Tim.” Tim couldn’t help but give them a shrug, he had to act sort of stupid so they wouldn’t question him too much. “I hope that gossip wall doesn’t pick it up. I know a few people who follow it religiously.”
“Gossip wall?” A loud groan whiney accompanied Tim’s question. “I hate this school.” Kip and Buzz nodded in an agreement.
“Well it’s not as popular over here, Bellwood uses it like crazy though. B&B, they talk about both schools on there.” Kip flipped through the pages of his mystery-noir books. A heap of junk in Tim’s opinion but maybe just knew too much about mysteries.
Tim grabbed his bag, Kip asked where he was going. “I gotta go see about a girl.” They hated when he referenced movies.
“Dude Mrs. Meyers is gonna kill you!”
“Believe me, I know.” Tim muttered under his breath. Tim had his work cut out. He was going to find the vigilante girl, and he was gonna shut down that stupid B&B gossip wall.
a/n: also aged tim up to be about 17 at least, there won't be anything nsfw whatsoever but it just lowk aligns with myself sooooo but yeah not for any nefarious reasons (farthest we ever go is NORMAL teenaged talk so mostly just stuff eluding but I will never write it specifically about tim it just may be mentioned) but the age thing i just think it works better for the fic (kind of messes up the continuity cause technically he turns 16 in 2003 but shhh)
and as always...bare with me guys I'm trying
