Elliot Page is a really good actor and I don’t think they were so bad at playing a straight person that they said, fuck it, Vanya’s gay now. I think Vanya was always queer but she spent her entire life suppressing her emotions that she might not have even considered the possibility she was LGBT, to the point that she was willing to throw herself at the first person who gave a damn about her. It wasn’t until she was without any of the hang ups of being a Hargreeves she was able to be her most authentic self.

From what I have gathered from the first episode with Zoé in it, she used to go to boarding school in the New York until she got bullied out, saying she could never be herself and when people found out they hated her for it….
