regardless of the writer's intentions, cause when it comes to the todorokis those slide right off me, i don't think dabi becoming more unhinged or erratic as the touya reveal approached/after it is necessarily contradictory to his character's previously detached attitude. i actually quite liked it. hear me outtt

i think of how enji set a fire inside touya and then when it started burning touya, enji left him in hopes it would die on its own, but for touya the fire was how he earned his father's love, and that was all he knew how to do, so it got bigger and bigger and bigger until it burned him alive. and then he was alive again, and none of it had been worth it. and dabi means cremation. i think touya became very good at compartmentalizing his emotions. he carved out everything that was his father's, all that was "touya", all those overwhelming feelings, all that grief and rage and longing and love, because he couldn't keep living otherwise. touya couldn't stand coming home to know his death had meant nothing, that his father didn't care. touya was made for his father so he couldn't live without him. so touya had to go. so, in carving out everything that had been his father's, he was left with nothing, because touya's entire identity revolved around his father.

and that nothingness is dabi. dabi is cold and calculating and detached and he's functional the way touya couldn't have been and he's empty. his fire is blue as a result of the devastating all consuming painful feelings of a thirteen year old longing to earn back the attention and validation of his groomer, and the resulting heat is overwhelmingly high, but dabi has forcibly detached himself from that child enough that the blue flames come across as cold, as icy. dabi is who touya had to create to lock away all those feelings that killed him once and would do it again if he let them for long enough to do what he had to do.

but touya is still there, obviously, like little cinders in the ashes. and the more imminent the moment gets, the harder it is for "dabi" to stay at the forefront. they start bleeding into each other because he is still that thirteen year old because he never got to grow up really, and in the face of his father again, being finally finally finally seen by him, he can no longer neatly compartmentalize himself and his feelings. so he regresses into that child and the fire sparks up again and he knows it will kill him again but this time, this time, this time he will make it mean something, he will make his father care, he will make everyone see him.
