just read your new welcome/masterlist
please tell us about the 70 editions of tolkien you have!!!
I'm gonna use this as a post where I will answer some questions I assume I would get about them, but if you want to see any more volumes or ask a question that isn't here, please do send an ask! I am more than happy to show!
*disclaimer!! i am not a book expert, nor a tolkien expert, so i may not know every tidbit! i do not claim to know about all of these books just because i own them!*
Read below, it's a looooong one!
What does the "Tolkien Shelf" look like?
that is her in all her glory! (as of 07/05/25) i reorganize it so often that the look of it changes a lot, but this is how i've had it for the last few weeks! some duplicates/very boring covers are in behind the ones you can see as well!
2. Where do you get all your copies?
everything you see on the shelf was bought second hand! i've had this collection for just about two years now, and it takes a surprisingly immense amount of effort to source everything. i love collecting used media (books, dvds, records, cds, cassettes, vhs, etc), so of course i had to begin one just for tolkien. majority of books i find are lotr and the hobbit (because his other novels are not easy to find used + affordable), but i do have some in there! i only add to this collection when i find things at thrift stores, used book stores, and the odd time facebook marketplace if there's a good deal! my biggest pet peeve is how hard it is to find all three copies of lotr used!!! so many times i have found 2/3 and then have to aimlessly hope and pray that i find the third one some day!
3. What was your first ever copy?
i found this edition in a used bookshop in edinburgh! before this i had never read lotr, and i definitely didn't plan on collecting the novels, but here we are! this one will always have a special place in my heart and it is always the version of the fellowship that i pick up when i re-read the series. will always be a favourite! i believe it was only £4! sadly still searching for the matching two towers and rotk edition of this print!
4. What is your favourite edition you own?
this 3-in-1 hardcover is so fucking beautiful, i found it at a random small thrift store in a fishing town in the pacific northwest. it is by far the heaviest edition i own but it's so beautiful that (as you probably saw) i always display it outwards!
5. What is your oldest copy?
this version of the hobbit is the oldest tolkien book i own! it is a 1966 edition and it is definitely falling apart at the seams! i love it dearly, there's even a printed tolkien signature inside which is epic!
these are some other super old copies i own, all from the late 60s/70s! (fun fact, that edition of the hobbit was originally priced at $5, but the lady at the thrift store sold it to me for .25₵)
6. What is your most recent edition to your collection?
this one here!!! i literally got it three days ago for $10, it was really cool because as someone who (thought) she had seen every cover of every published tolkien book, i had never come across this one before! it's so fucking hideous but for some reason i love it so much??
7. Favourite box set/full lotr trilogy you own?
it's a toss up between these two, and i love them both for polar opposite reasons!
the first set was the first box-set i ever found, i got it for an incredibly good deal of $10!!! it's the find that made me realize i wanted to start collecting, these copies are also very very old! i have the original box for them also :)
the second set i love because it's just fucking funny to me. i am NOT one for real people/movie posters on book covers, but who can resist a sexy legolas two towers? not me!
8. Most expensive book you own?
i'm answering this based on which book i personally paid the most for, not which copy i own that is worth the most (because i don't fucking know). this baby right here was a whopping $30 from a used book store in the canadian prairies, but worth every penny!!! it is SO hard to find used tolkien books that aren't his fiction novels, so i could never in a million years pass this up. i love this book so very much.
9. What is the best deal you got on a book from your collection?
BOOM. fucking smith of wootton major & farmer giles of ham. like what is this book LMAO. this is the only book by tolkien i own that isn't about middle-earth! best part? it was FREE. yes, free. a lady who had sold me tolkien books a previous time texted me and said she had something for me, and then came and dropped this off! i did nearly cry!
edit i fucking LIED i also own the fall of arthur which does not take place in middle-earth!
10. What is your favourite book from your collection that wasn't written by Tolkien?
i LOVE this complete guide to middle-earth, it is genuinely just a massive dictionary full of names and places and weapons and elvish words from tolkien's legendarium, all alphabetically organized! i go into it all the time ESPECIALLY when doing fic research. the second book is literally just a book full of activities, they have crosswords and word searches and everything! best part? when i found it at the thrift store, no one had written in it! it's completely blank! it's just so silly.
11. Favourite Tolkien item to collect that isn't books?
DVDs!!! so so so hard to find, but i adore finding tolkien-based dvds, these are some that aren't the lotr or hobbit films! i also collect CDs (have all the movie soundtracks and a two towers audiobook), magazines/picture books, and figurines! i also love finding things like clothing and posters!
Welp, what a doozy! If you have any other questions, or if there's a book in my collection i didn't post/you want a closer look at, please feel free to send an ask!!
