top 5 family dynamics specifically within the family (like, jenna/jeremy, jenna/elena, etc) for mikaelsons AND one list without mikaelsons
To no one’s surprise, my favorites are Finn- and Kol-heavy (someone has to stick up against neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeklaus’s anti-Kol reign of terror 😒)
Underappreciated in the fandom, but I love them! Something about this scene scratched my brain:
If this happened between any of the Mikaelsons besides Finn and Kol, people would be insane about it and never shut up!!!!!
How softly he touches her drives me insane.
They have banter! They have good times! They have the horrible stench of betrayal sitting between them! All the amazing stuff needed for a good dynamic!
Anyone who has read What Resembles the Grave knows how deeply I feel about this dynamic.
No one gets them like I do!!!!!! I talked about it briefly in my kolvina ask a few weeks ago, but I think it is so significant to both of their characterizations that Elijah consistently recreates one of his biggest traumas (holding down Klaus while he is harmed by their family) on Kol repeatedly.
I’m surprised the Elijah whumpers aren’t all over the emotional whumpage you can give Elijah when he finally makes this connection internally. Probably because they all personally hate me and don’t want me to be happy.
To sum up my thoughts, here is an excerpt from That This Might've Shook the Love From Me:
He thinks of the last time he touched his brother.
The memory sits in him like bile. A holiday, long ago. Pine resin sharp in the air, smoke curling. Laughter, flickering candlelight, Niklaus smiling too wide. Elijah had come up behind Kol, arm looped around his throat, the other locked across his chest. Niklaus had laughed, Kol had struggled, and Elijah—Elijah had thought nothing of it.
And then came decades when Kol was gone. When Elijah believed that rough hold had been farewell. That the last touch he offered his youngest living brother was one of restraint, a parody of affection, a reminder that Elijah's hand could hold him still but not hold him safe.
That his goodbye to Kol would be the grip of violence—of active participation, of bored acceptance of the necessity of putting Kol into what so closely resembled a grave.
And since Kol's return—he realizes with something near horror—he has not corrected it. He has not sought him out, has not embraced him, has not laid hands on him with any measure of kindness. He has spoken, yes. Offered counsel, protection, empty words. But touch is the language Kol had always understood best, and Elijah had left it untranslated.
The thought makes him ill.
5.) Sophie/Jane-Anne/Monique
@philtatosbuck once reblogged a post of mine with my favorite tags on the subject:
#the deveraux family means so much to me#what if you were dating a vampire and he stopped the slaughter because you didn't believe#and you were indirectly responsible for the witches being persecuted#but you don't even care about all that. you just care that you accidentally got your niece murdered#and you will sacrifice that other teenage girl who saw it all happen#to get her back#because your sister . her mother . DIED for it#and now you don't have your niece or your sister but boom. your niece comes back#and all you want is to get the hell out of dodge. but your niece is so warped that she kills you. oh sophie deveraux i love you
4.) Matt and Vicki Donovan
Just look at the recent posts in my Vicki tag, specifically this post. It will explain everything.
Mason’s love for Tyler is a significant reason the gang was eventually able to kill Finn and Kol—his choice to leave Damon alive when he could have killed him, and instead take him to those tunnels, does eventually lead to the gang learning about the white oak. His final words are, in part, begging Jeremy to make sure this doesn’t happen to Tyler. It’s Mason’s love for Tyler that saves Damon from dying that night—and ugh, I feel so deeply that it’s Damon who eventually kills Tyler. And what that says about Mason’s sacrifice. And about Damon’s character in general. And that everyone in Tyler’s family dies trying to save him (Richard sends him away, saving his life from the council. Mason, from beyond the grave, is trying to save him. Carol begs Klaus to spare him). Just a lot of feelings.
Oh! The Parkers are so precious to me, but the twins specifically! I’ve talked about my feelings about the Gemini Coven being a classic death cult before at length and to steal from myself:
Your brother murders all the children your mother gave birth in a desperate bid to bring you into the world to get to you—they lived because of you and they died because of you too. You’re supposed to save your coven. You hate your coven. You see what your coven for what it truly is. You love each other. Your older sister saves you from certain death. And you still die. Was that always your destiny? Were you always meant to die like this? Kai wanted to kill you from the day you were born and he succeeded, didn’t he? You both walk willingly into death—the thing you so desperately tried to avoid.
Luke loves his sister enough to die for her—and that love is so strong that it renders Kai unable to kill her in The Day I Tried to Live. But Liv dies anyway—how she was always destined to go, at the hands of some she loves. Luke. Tyler. It makes no difference in the end.
The heart of TVD! Sorry, everything about them is perfect to me—the season one sibling-isms, Elena being a protective older sister, her pushing him around, him being annoying, them worrying about each other, seeking out comfort in each other. Elena sending him away to protect him, Jeremy trying to save her in Season Four even though it leads to his death, Elena burning down her childhood home with his body inside.
One day I’ll finish my Orpheus/Eurydice retelling with these two (something something he is your little brother, he isn’t supposed to die first, how many times will Eurydice die before you stop trying to save her, something something you love him, will you die for him? He died for you, didn’t he? Do you trust that he’s behind you? They had to bring him back for her to feel alive. Idk, feelings exist inside me about it)
