What if, during that period before sans agreed to the deal with the human, it was literally so rare for him to really see Toriel’s actual face, the lady behind the door with the funny jokes and puns, that she stood out to him a lot as a sorta novelty—something new.
What if there was a timeline where they managed to be very close and sans grew to know more and more about her with each reset, on the surface or otherwise, and Tori was one of the few who could still get sans to laugh or smile or even attempt to joke and pun around like he used to. Until eventually not even she could really reach him.
Before I send in an ask or two, I am curious on what your toriels are like. Like UT, US, UF, and such.

First ask for these ladies mhm
Toriel: Toriel is the same lady as in game, she's comforting, and very sweet. When she's in a relationship, she's pretty shy with new things. She's still trying to get used to being in a relationship again and sometimes, she might get a little overwhelmed with things but she's very comforting to be around and loves spending time with you!
Lady: Lady is stern, tough, and can be very scary when she needs to be but she's also a sweetheart. She's tired from having to do all of the things that she was forced to do in the past but she knows that she had to do it. She enjoys being near you and will tell you often how much she loves you but she's easily jealous and can be much too protective of you on accident.
Mistress: She sucks at baking but likes to make meat pies! :D she sometimes is a bit stern with things that she believes would be best for you or anyone around... she could be bossy and rude but other times, mostly when she's around her datemate, she's very sweet and loves to cuddle and hug them and will growl at anyone who gets too close. She loves dark humor and sometimes could push it a bit too far without realizing.
Flare: She tries her best to be caring and take care of everyone around her but sometimes, without thinking about it, her mind takes over and she'll do things that could be a little much. If someone is hurt, even just a scratch, she'll panic and wrap them up too much and will 'protect them' but it's just because she's scared to be alone again. She's very touchy and very loving.
Cinnamon: Just like in Underfell she sucks at cooking or really making anything but she's very good at making hot chocolate with cinnamon which is where she got her nickname! She's a kind queen but her anger is almost the scariest thing that you could ever have directed at you. She was the one to decide to make Mutt the judge, knowing that if someone ever tried to attack and hurt everyone, he would lose control of his magic. She has a lot of guilt hidden behind her smile and her eyes are sad.
Scotch: She is the queen of the underground and is... sad. She hates what she had to do so long ago and, honestly, drinks to get her mind off of it. She's often drunk more than she's sober, and she doesn't go out to see anyone all that often. Not many people know what she looks like, and they just know of stories about her. She would come out more if she's invited but many people fear her
