So as the title says, I’ll be dumping some tea into the harbor that is Tumblr. A year ago I worked at my local News Station, and it was the worst job I ever had. I was a VizRT Operator, the guy who creates the graphics that appear on the News and specific News stories. It was my first job in the entertainment industry, and there’s no way you could get me to go back to work for TV/News. All seemed fine when I went in for my interview, my supervisor seemed strict but not unreasonable. He took me into the control booth and showed me what went on behind the scenes. The operator that I was replacing was in the booth and they said hi, showed my supervisor what they were working on. It happened to be a Full Screen graphic for a story, and my supervisor looked it over and saw that one of the words in the graphic was lower case (for context the first word on every line must be capitalized for the sake of consistency), told her to fix it and send it back to tape. As we left the booth he told me as we walked to the elevator, “I had to get out of there, I would've lost it. You can’t make errors like that.” I was a little shocked to hear that, but I put it off to him just exaggerating and having a bad day. I was so wrong. When I was training with some of the morning crew, he came into the booth and asked how I liked my other co-workers. I told him that I liked working with Bob (I’m not using his real name) and he responded with, “Bob is so bad at his job that he’s not qualified to masturbate.” This was totally untrue, Bob was actually great at his job, but apparently butted heads with my supervisor in the past, so I tried not to get on my supervisor’s bad side.
Months had gone by and I had changed. I lost weight ( I weighed 140lbs and dropped 20lbs) from stress, I was extremely anxious and on edge. The behavior that my supervisor displayed when I first interviewed, showed its true colors. Whenever he came into the booth with me, he would deride me every time I made a mistake. Telling me that I was useless, swearing at me, and threatening to fire me. All I could do was shake in a mixture of anger, fear, and rage. I would break out into a sweat whenever he would come in, and my jacket no matter how many times I washed it smelled of sweat. I found out that I wasn't the only this was happening too. A co-worker of mine, also a young guy, was pulled into my supervisor’s office and was threatened with the loss of his job for making a small mistake on air. My co-worker then left a month later after that meeting. This should’ve been a warning sign but I needed the money, and I had just got engaged to my now wife. A couple of months had passed after my co-worker had left, and things were going well at my old job. I had covered a major storm and did it well, my co-workers loved working with me, and the planning for my wedding was going smoothly. Then one day I let an error go on air. The error wasn’t anything huge I had let an error from a writer slip. It was a forward slash that had made it on air, on a graphic that was only going to be on for a couple of seconds. As soon as it came down, I got a phone call from my supervisor’s cell phone, chewing me out for letting that slip. I didn't think anything of it, it was a small error and not even the directors noticed it. This happened on a weekend. Come Monday, after the morning show was over, I was called to go upstairs to HR’s office. I was told to gather all of my things. My heart dropped to my stomach. I gathered my things, took the elevator, and went into HR’s office. My supervisor was waiting in there, along with the head of HR. I was told to sit down and my supervisor told, “this isn’t personal, but I have to fire you. being an Operator makes us the last line of defense, and you've let some things slip.” I felt a wave of relief, and sadness wash over me. I just calmly looked at him and said, “okay.” He extended his hand saying, “I thought this was going to be much harder, again not personal.” I shook his hand, “Right, okay.” He left the room, I talked to the head of HR and got unemployment information.
Don’t let this happen to you. The moment your boss bullies you, demeans other employees, threatens your job, explodes in a violent rage, leave. Leave that place. Report them to HR, and put in your two weeks. Finding a job can be rough, but it’s not worth the abuse of a bully for a boss. It can absolutely ruin you. If I had stayed there any longer I would’ve needed to take anti-anxiety medication. See the warning signs, don’t make the same mistake I did.
