This one is pretty short, but I hope you enjoy it all the same!

“Easy, easy,” Supervillain said, holding their hands up in a placating gesture, “I’m not armed, Hero. It’s okay.”

Hero’s eyes darted between Supervillain, their men, and the cliff below. They held their hands out in front of them, ready to shoot ice at any point. Dozens of tranquilizer guns were trained on the cryogenic, ready to fire on command.

“I just wanna go home!” Hero shouted over the waterfalls.

“I know,” Supervillain said, “I know. We’re doing important work, Hero, you just need to be patient-”

“I’m tired of being patient! I want to go home! I don’t want to be here anymore! Let me go!”

Supervillain gave the signal for their men to stand down. They did so, and Supervillain approached Hero slowly. A few times, an ice crystal started to form, but Hero never fired.

“I know you’re scared,” Supervillain said, “and hurting, and confused. I understand all of those things. But this isn’t the way out. You’re putting your life in danger, and if you’re not careful, you won’t ever get to go home. I don’t want to see you hurt. Come back with me, and we’ll talk about it, okay?”

Hero faltered for a moment, lowering their hands. With their own hand behind their back, Supervillain gave the signal. A dart fired, whizzing past Supervillain and into Hero’s shoulder.

Hero stared at it with wide, frightened eyes. They just had time to look back at Supervillain before they crumpled. A few soldiers came to pick them up, but Supervillain stopped them. They lifted Hero into a bridal carry, shushing their quiet whimpers.

“It’s going to be okay,” Supervillain said, “this is just a precaution so you don’t get hurt. You’re not thinking clearly right now. We’re going to get you back to your room, and I promise we’ll have a discussion. Shhh, shhh.”

Hero couldn’t move, couldn’t speak, couldn’t think. The sounds of rushing water died down as Supervillain carried them into the back of the facility’s van. A single tear rolled down their cheek. They were so close to going home, but it was all for nothing.

Lab partners

The mission was supposed to be easy. Just sneak into the villains base, grab the research papers, and get out. It was supposed to be simple, in and out! The Hero was just about to walk out of the lab and turn the corner when they heard a something whoosh towards them and felt a pinch in their neck.

Shit..

They pulled out the dart with a wince, looking down at it in horror.

“There you are, you little thief.” They heard Villain speak behind them. They were decked out and their lab coat as per usual, their messy hair falling past their shoulders.

“V-..Villain?..” The hero stumbled back, swaying a bit as they took them in.

“Feeling a bit dizzy, are we? Oh look, now you’re creasing the documents!”

Hero hadn’t even realized they were bracing themself on the wall, the papers getting smooshed between it and their fingers. They were completely helpless as Villain strutted over to them and snatched them out of their hands.

“Do you have any idea how much research it took to finalize these? So much trial and error..failed experiments..set backs! ” The villain rants, waving the papers in front of their face. “No, of course you don’t. Heroes like you always underestimate the importance of science. The dedication and work I’ve put into making these new discoveries! Discoveries, Hero, that could change our world as we know it!”

The villain said with a firm grip on Hero’s shoulders. Even through their daze, hero could see that intense, zealous look in their eyes Villain would always get when they talked about their work. “Hey…at least they’re passionate!” Hero would always think, they found a sort of understanding with Villain. They recognized that determination they had, Hero had it too.

But right now Hero couldn’t very much determine anything, besides from the fact that they needed to get out of there, they couldn’t past out like this! Not in front of Villain! They almost lost their balance as they attempted to stumble back from the Villain, but just as they felt their knees buckling Villain was there to swiftly catch them, holding them up by the waist.

“Woah woah woah, easy there. We wouldn’t want you falling into the chemical cabinet, now would we?”

“Nngh..” the Hero whimpered, desperately trying to pull away from Villain and keep their eyes open.

“Huh..” Villain mumbled, studying Hero’s half-conscious face. A smirk appearing on their own. “You know what, I think I know exactly what I’m going to do with you.”

Hero felt their world turn upside down as Villain hoisted them over their shoulder. The groaned in disagreement but their world was slowly fading to black. The last thing Hero felt was the coolness of the metal slab they were being placed on.

“I’ve been needing some help in the lab, and I think I know the perfect volunteer.” The Villain said almost giddily, running a knuckle over the Hero’s cheek.

“Goodnight, my little test subject.”

Restless far from a Wine Dark sea - Day 22 - Sirens

Military medic Ernesto is tasked with taking in an injured sirena, creature of myth

The sirena wobbled ungainly down the street, streaked with blood.

Ernesto had been surprised to hear the army was being deployed to deal with a terrorist attack in the sea-side city of Clearwater, only to discover the perpetrators were apparently inhuman sea monsters of legend. The attacks by the creatures had been bad, the air of the city was cut with the wail of emergency vehicles attending to the victims. But Ernesto had been called in as an army medic, and had a more dangerous task to perform than his civilian counterparts.

They were going to take one alive.

He looked like a normal man, thin cotton trousers and a loose shirt, but he was heavily injured, clasping his left arm to his body as copious quantities of blood flowed out his right leg. They had been assured he had been seen fighting another mermaid, both using siren magic until only one had emerged alive from a small cafe on the corner of the street.Now, Ernesto was sure that without medical intervention, the sirena man would be also be dead soon.

The sirena stopped to stare up into the sky, and covered his eyes with one hand.

“I have him in my sights. Taking the shot.”

The tranquilliser dart hit him in the shoulder. The man stumbled and fell to his knees.

“Hit.”

The sirena started taking off his shoes. An unusual move, but people did strange things when tranquilised.

“It might take a moment. These darts are for a normal male human dose, but once he is down we are going to have to move fast. He may have hidden injuries, but the amount of blood that is coming out of his right thigh is the biggest concern once his airway is secure.” Ernesto told the other military personnel, though he had already briefed them in the medical truck. There was no room for mistakes once the sirena was down.

Finally, the creature slumped onto his back.

“Let’s go.” Ernesto ordered.

They approached carefully, the tranquiliser rifle trained on his still form, along with several more deadly weapons should the sea monster try to rise again.

Oxygen was the most important - the wrong dose of tranquiliser would shut down the sirena’s instinct to breath, and -more importantly to Ernesto- the oxygen mask would prevent him from speaking, singing, or biting.

The sirena seemed to be unconscious, not opening his eyes Ernesto approached.

“Ready.”

Ernesto pounced, slamming the O2 mask onto the seamonsters face, forcing the rubber bit between his teeth while burly soldiers pinned his ankles and shoulders to the ground, avoiding the places where the mercreature had appeared most injured.

The sirena groaned in pain, but didn’t open his eyes.

“Still unconscious, but can feel pain. Let’s get him secure.” 

Two other medics rushed over with a spinal board, fabric restraints already secured in the metal frame. It was designed to hold people far stronger than the short and slight man in front of Ernesto, but he hoped the sirena would not wake and demonstrate whether the mer had superhuman strength.

There was so much they didn’t know.

They needed this sirena alive.

The merman was swarmed, hands lifting him onto the board and straps being pulled tight. 

“Not too tight on his legs; we may need to manoeuvre them when we bandage them up…” The straps were loosened, but not enough to allow a great range of movement.

“Let’s do an emergency assessment, just for life threatening injuries. Roy, get some gauze on his right thigh, try to stop some of that bleeding.” Ernesto ordered, “Ogunyemi, can you check the bleeding on the right thigh?”

“Left thigh has serious bleeding, hit something important. I reckon he will need surgery and a transfusion asap, as the rate of blood loss is life threatening…”

Getting the sirena off the street and into the military ambulance was already high on Ernesto’s list of priorities. They could stabilise him in the truck.

“His left arm is broken, probably a complex fracture of some kind. It did not move correctly when I restrained it,” Ogunyemi informed him as she started to dab away blood from the sirena’s left leg, “Right leg doesn’t look too bad, bloodloss minimal. But there appears to be a symbol drawn on the skin? Let me wipe some of the blood away…” Ogunyemi patted the injury with a piece of gauze.

Abruptly, there was a tearing of fabric, and the man’s legs were replaced by an expanse of deep blue scales, stretching 2 metres, culminating in a fan-like fishtail the colour of freshly spilled blood.

The sirena showed his true form.

“Ok,” Ernesto breathed, not letting the transformation shake him, “let’s get him moved into the ambulance. We just need to keep him alive…”

a/n tried to do a double reference to sirens with a hispanic first-responder, then realised military trucks probaly don't have sirens, but it's an abulance so it has the vibes.

Ooohhh, but what about the hero team brining a tranq gun to sedate Supervillian's wolves, only one of the Heroes hits Supervillian with tranq when he surprises them... this overdoses the Supervillian, who has to be rushed to the medical team

i love the fact that this supervillain has actual wolves as their defense team, that's such a vibe

Hero didn't mean to hit Villain with the tranq, but when they do, they see the exact moment Villain's face falls, their expression going slack with shock and betrayal, like they hadn't expected this kind of cruelty from Hero and assume it was intentional

Hero frets the entire time they're getting Villain to the medics and while Villain is being treated because they see that Villain thought that Hero had meant to do that, and they don't know why that look of betrayal bothered them so much

Villain wakes up in the heroes base, bitter and confused. They knew Hero shot them, and thinking it was part of their plan to capture them, they snarl at Hero as soon as they enter
