I haven’t fully thought this idea through but…

What if John Constantine is a trans man in every universe, has found a way to transition by hook or by crook (by hormones or by satanic rituals) in every single universe…. Except one.

Because in one universe, Constantine grew up unable to dream.

Unable to imagine a different self, a different future.

And so in one universe, just one, John Constantine is Johanna.

John Constantine being a transman/AFAB is still a vaild headcanon despite him having biological kids because there's no way in hell that the DC/Vertigo universe doesn't have some sort of magic spell/item that can change your assigned sex and give you the ability to reproduce still.

Okay mini bitch fest about The Sandman. Don't get me wrong, I actually love the show and I love the cast. I just-

It's just Johanna Constantine as John Constantine's replacement.

All the rest make sense to me. But I am kinda just really sad/disappointed with Johanna existing in this context.

And I don't mean Jenna Coleman. That casting for what it is, is good.

I just hate that it couldn't be John. And I suspect it's to do with corporate bullshit which is what really gets me. Because this is the second show recently that's just completely written out John because of some corporate bullshit.

John Constantine is probably my favourite character of all time in DC/Vertigo. He's openly bi/pan. He owns his mistakes and tries to take responsibility (in his own way). And there's just so much to his character.

I know it's not because of "wokeness" they replaced John because he was already openly queer.

And Johanna already exists in the comics as his ancestor. So I know it was convenient.

And even if they couldn't get Matt Ryan in, it would have been understandable. Still annoying af coz he's a great Constantine in my personal opinion but still.

So like it's definitely some corporate bullshit which makes me sad. Because what in the world is this shit coming to.

And like, you know what would've been kinda cool? Like instead of using his ancestor and genderbending it? Like if they made John a trans guy who constantly just gets dead named or is only referred to by his last name. And like if Dream (or anyone else) asks what his actual first name is, he could just shrug and say he "hadn't decided yet so just call me Constantine" or if he was being flirty, "they call me the best (or some pet name)". That would've been cool af.

So just using his ancestor as a replacement, like I get it. It's easy. The character already exists. It's just... Sad. I'm sick of John being written out because of bullshit contracts.
