it's been a long time coming...

I have some news.

I'm not sure who's still around that will see this, but I'd never have written this book or gotten here without the years of support I received from fandom for my writing. I am so grateful to everyone who ever commented, shared, left kudos, or messaged me about my fanfics.

If it wasn't for the confidence you all gave me, I don't know that I'd have had the courage on Christmas Day 2018 to sit down and start writing what would become my first original novel. That book didn't go anywhere, but now, on Christmas Day 2025, my debut is currently the most requested ARC for Berkley Romance on Netgalley. The fact that it's 12th in all romance and 22nd for ALL of Netgalley is even more mind blowing. What an incredible, surreal, wonderful full circle moment.

This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me review

I got an early release copy of "Maggie" for review from edelweiss!

It is so damn good. I'm on my third reread.

Here's a review:

If you’ve read any Ilona Andrews books before then you know that their urban fantasy stories combine smart heroines, found families, twisty plots, a romance or two, and inventive action scenes all set in real-seeming worlds. Oh, and extremely capable and attractive men. Usually more than one. This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me is a bit of a departure from their urban fantasies in that it’s a full-on late medievalesque fantasy world, with the cutthroat politics and familial plotting you’d expect from something like Game of Thrones or Wheel of Time. When Maggie enters this world, she recognizes it immediately as her favorite (yet tragically unfinished) fantasy book series that she’s spent years obsessively reading and rereading. Reading dark scary fantasy books from your comfortable couch is far different than experiencing this world and its people up close and personal. And Maggie is tossed into the story right before the entire kingdom is about to go up in flames. Will she try to stop the disaster from unfolding using her knowledge from the books? She may not know as much as she thinks. She’s an IA heroine, so of course she’s gotta try. I had so much fun with this book! Maggie is a delight. Smart and caring, but also trying to find her feet in a world where she’s powerless and not hurt people unnecessarily. She draws people into her orbit while trying to to keep them safe and I loved that about her. There are dangerous conversations over tea and to die for pastries, swordfights, magical duels, daring rescues, assassins, poisonings, carriage chases, dances, and a conclusion that took my breath away.

It’s everything you’d want in a fantasy series, and I cannot wait for the next book! I’m utterly hooked. Five stars.

It's always interesting when people compare Elizabeth to Lydia, and they do have a few similarities, but I personally viewed a pre-Darcy Elizabeth as well on the way to becoming her father: intelligent, witty, insightful and independent yet always mocking rather than genuinely connecting, bantering rather than having real and serious conversations, retreating and detaching rather than engaging.

And that's why even though the focus is usually on how meeting Elizabeth transformed Darcy for the better, I see Darcy as just as integral to Elizabeth evolving into a far better person. Darcy is serious, complex, mature, responsible, and painfully honest - he compels Elizabeth to take life more seriously, to rethink her judgments, viewpoints and perspectives rather than just remaining complacent, and to engage in deeper discussions and more candid self-introspection than she would have otherwise!
