Privilege
I’m privileged in more ways than one. I’m white, I have a (semi)nice family who supports me in everything I do, and I don’t have to worry about whether or not that was the last goodbye I was able to say to my family.
When I had my first black boyfriend, there were things that changed in my world. My eyes got a glimpse of a whole other part, the less privileged side.
We would get small remarks when we walked through Walmart, people would stare, and people would even threaten us. After I talked to my family about this, I started thinking of ways I could protect us. In this world, he couldn’t go around trying to defend us without the possibility of him getting shot by the people who were here to protect us in the first place. I started taking self defense classes, i kept bats and golf clubs in my car, i now carry a knife in my pocket and am currently working on my carry permit. I have the white privilege to be able to have the chance to say “Sir, I have a permitted gun in the car” and not get shot at.
There was a time when I got off work late at night and my (now ex) boyfriend and i were standing by our cars just talking. We started getting circled by another car that had people yelling the n word and monkey fucker at us. He just rolled his eyes and said to ignore them, but I’m prepared now. I’m prepared to stand up against injustice and racism like this. I pulled out that golf club so quickly and started swinging at that car because I refuse to just let it slide. But I knew that if I had been a different color, the cops would have been called and I would have probably gotten arrested or worse.
When I was with my black girlfriend, people stared and I call them out on it. I’m constantly looking out for any type of racist, sexist, or homophobic comments in this hillbilly town I live in.
I am not trying to speak over the many POC who are outraged by the death of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Trayvon Martin, Sandra Bland, Freddie Gray, Breonna Taylor, Shelly Fray, and others. I am here to try and advocate for more white people to start using their privileged voice and help the POCs voice be heard.
To my friends of color- I won’t pretend I know what it’s like. But I will tell you I’m sorry. I’m sorry you may feel you live life in fear. I’m sorry you have to hold your breath every time you see police or you’re confronted. I’m sorry that the world just doesn’t seem to get it. You matter. Your life matters. And I will try to help you in any way I can.
If anyone has any suggestions on how I can help raise the voice of POC, please message me.

So I’ve been interning with a local police department as I’m interested in working in criminal justice/going on to get my master’s in criminology. During one of my ride alongs, a man pulled his SUV up to the driver’s side of my supervising officer’s marked vehicle. He was lodging a complaint about illegal activity on his block. During the exchange between him and the officer, he pulled out his gun and held it up where the officer could see it without warning. He did it with no threatening gesturing; it just didn’t occur to him that he could verbally make this officer aware that he was packing heat. The officer, though immediately on guard and wary of the situation, didn’t not pull out their weapon. They did not make a threat or become aggressive. They were very calm and level-headed and we drove away from the exchange with no incident whatsoever.
It wasn’t very smart of that man to produce a weapon in front of an officer without warning. However, that officer handled the situation in stride. They were wary, but used deescalation tactics and an understanding demeanor.
So why do unarmed, nonthreatening, often times random, people get killed by officers? Why are people being murdered over packs of cigars, loud noises, “fitting a description,” or candy?
This has got to end.
Fetishizing people based of their skin color or racial stereotypes is disturbing as heck.
