They walk for several minutes, passing buildings that seemingly stretched into the very sky.
“Rouge,” Shadow says, “how long have you known about this?”
Rouge pauses. “I’m not completely sure. A couple of days? A week?”
“And this has been going on for…?”
“Even longer.” Shadow eyes Rouge’s hand as it tightens around the strap of her purse. “Too long.”
“Why involve me now, then?”
Rouge fully stops this time, and Shadow stops with her. “Shadow, hon,” she looks Shadow square in the eyes. “If it was up to me – and the situation wasn’t as bad as it could be – I wouldn’t have gotten you involved. I know how important it was for you to go on your little trip. But, of course, someone always needs saving.”
She smiles, then, but it’s tight and bittersweet.
Shadow’s not sure what to make of that, or the slight pulse of warmth that blooms across his chest from the honesty in her words. Instead, he just says, “thanks.”

Rouge takes Shadow to meet up with the gang, and to investigate something related to NIDS. Rouge and Shadow talk, and Shadow remembers some stuff he kind of wishes he didn't.
David lifted his hood as he peeked around the corner. "David will be inconspicuous. No one will notice, he's even there."
Casio sighed. He was a burly man. His skin was colored a rich brown and hung tightly to his bones. "Sire, if you keep talking about yourself in the third person, people are bound to suspect something."
"You're right." He cleared his throat. "Should I disguise my voice?"
"No, sire. It would only draw more attention." The prince blinked at him as a smirk grew on his lips. The guard chuckled, "with all due respect, your impressions are sub-par at best. In any case, the people aren't familiar with your voice, sire."
David playfully rolled his eyes. "If you keep that up, we'll get caught for sure."
"What?"
"Don't call me sire." He leaned up against the wall and stood on his toes to see over the gate.
"What would you have me call you then?"
He thought a moment as he fell back down. David didn’t want to stray far from his actual name. "Davey."
"What kind of name is 'Davey'?"
"The kind this commoner has. From now on, my name is Davey. Davey Jay Pierce."
Casio picked up the canvas bags at their feet. "Very clever, si-" he closed his eyes as he corrected himself. "Davey."
