Connect your pull to your glutes for better propulsion. The single leg inverted row, a progression from the bent leg row posted weeks ago, is more specific to the long axis strokes of freestyle and backstroke, with its anti-rotational demands on one leg, and the long lever of the leg. Train to swim downhill; head, ribs, pelvis and legs in a straight line. Swimming too upright creates drag, makes you work harder and drives you into extension, straining and fatiguing the lower back, with poor positioning of the rest of the body for the shoulder to work around. Many new or weaker athletes will use a short term passive stability strategy to create tension during lifts often placing their joints in suboptimal positions to produce force. Particularly pulling and pushing with the TRX, a stability progression tool, athletes will try to brace and rub against the straps for stability as the muscular forces of the lats and pecs pull them into internal rotation and adduction.
